ACCREDITED BY THE On September 15, 1942, in the South Pacific, three Japanese torpedoes slammed into the US aircraft carrier Wasp, setting o a series of explosions, followed by uncontrollable fires. Thirty-five minutes after impact, Captain Forest P. Sherman gave the order to abandon ship. The irreparably damaged ship drifted until nightfall, when the destroyer USS Lansdowne was ordered to torpedo and sink the IN THIS ISSUE Wasp. The Society participated in Burroughs-Molette Event Rentals Elementary School’s Veterans Day Program on November 8, highlighting the role of the Coast Guard in keeping America safe. World War II Home Front Museum Site Manager Kim Campbell demonstrated the use of semaphore and signal flags to communicate in code, while Education Director Sandy Jensen assisted students in cracking a “secret message” and coloring their own unique symbol flags. Society member Emerson Mungin, Jr. also participated in the event. Mr. Mungin discussed his family’s role in the military, part of which is featured within the Home Front Museum. The carriers immediately went to General Quarters on what had already been an eventful morning. Using the clouds as cover, the Japanese aircraft managed to reach a point above ‘Taffy 1’ without being seen. Suddenly, at 0740 hrs, an A6M5 Reisen dived out of the clouds directly into the escort carrier USS Santee (CVE-29), crashing through its flightdeck on the port side forward of the elevator. Just 30 seconds later a second ‘Zeke’ dived towards the USS Suwannee (CVE-27), while a third targeted USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) – anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) fire managed to shoot down both fighters. Then, at 0804 hrs, a fourth ‘Zeke’ dived on the Petrof Bay, but when hit by AAA it swerved and crashed into the flightdeck of Suwanee, blowing a hole in it forward of the aft elevator.

The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.)     American Fighter Aces and Friends The Bulletin of the American Fighter Aces Association April 2018 | Volume 35, No 2 Dick Fleischer: Thunderbolt Over New Guinea Association President's Message Dear Aces, Friends, Survivors, and Honorees: Our Ace's Association was founded in 1960, recognizing the 1450 combat pilots that qualified as Aces for action in World War I, WW II. Korea and Vietnam. In individual combat they contributed to the security of our country in times of war. Since that day, membership in the Association has continued to inspire patriotism and set a high example for our youth in America. Our mission each year is to remind our public of the commitment the pilots had, to remain confident and courageous. It seemed to always be one on one or against the odds, playing the hand they were dealt. Betting it all. The Association's commitment transcends time and continues to be the direction we want to go. I have a large number of helpers in getting the Association's day's work done and I owe many a "Thank You" for their efforts. The Board of Directors officers give continually of their time on com- mittees and are joined by Friends and volunteers to participate in study groups. In order to continue our mission of the future as an educational organization a few changes will have to be made and will require help of some strong donors to get good results. I encourage our Friends of the AFAA to help us in advice, suggestions and recruited a larger membership for support.

    Introduction One of the legendary and tragic stories to arise from the Battle of Midway was the plight of Torpedo EIGHT. With no fighter escorts, this torpedo plane squadron was mauled by Zero fighters and faced a hail of anti-aircraft fire. No aircraft and only one pilot survived the attack. Three years and three months later, another torpedo plane squadron attempted a similar attack against one of the largest battleships ever built, the Musashi. However, this time the Japanese were not able to bring the brunt of the anti-aircraft defenses against the attackers due to the covering actions of Hellcat fighters swooping down on the superbattleship with guns blazing. Ensign Jack Taylor was one of those fighter pilots who performed not one, but two strafing runs against one of Japan's most formidable warships. With Taylor and his squadron mates suppressing the Musashi's anti-aircraft batteries, the torpedo planes and accompanying dive bombers dropped their weapons and hit their mark, sending the superbattleship to the bottom of the Sibuyan Sea. Taylor's fighter squadron served as a component of Carrier Air Group FIFTEEN. When he arrived on the USS Essex as a replacement pilot in late June 1944, the squadron had already distinguished itself in the famed "Marianas Turkey Shoot" splashing sixty-seven of the attacking enemy aircraft. During the remaining months of the deployment, the squadron claimed the destruction of 500 to 600 more aircraft. Twenty-six pilots scored five or more kills, to earn the coveted title of "Ace." Having credit for two kills, Taylor was not among the twenty-six.

    NOTICE TO AIRMEN NOTAMPACIFIC AVIATION MUSEUM PEARL HARBOR • FORD ISLAND, HI SUMMER 2018 | ISSUE #34 IN THIS ISSUE Sneak peek at our new exhibit Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT “Everything in due time,” has never been more applicable! More than two years ago, we embarked on a journey – conducting a battlefield study to document the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Funded by the National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program, and executed with the expert support of Booz Allen Hamilton, the project included researching, defining, mapping, documenting and recording the significance of the Ford Island runway, hardstand areas, and the relationship of these areas to the footprint of Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. The project deliverables included a clarified preservation message assessing overall site integrity, threats and restoration requirements, along with the development of a protection and stewardship plan. "Over the next few months, newly designed exhibits will bring forward some of our findings..." This month, after a great deal of work, community engagement, and stakeholder endorsement, the National Park Service accepted our American Battlefield Protection Program report and recommendations. Over the next few months, newly designed exhibits will bring forward some of our findings, identifying markers of the attack obscured by natural overgrowth or that remain located in restricted areas on Ford Island. Though not yet considered, we also plan to develop, in partnership with the Navy and all stakeholders, a stabilization and landscape management plan that will protect the runway and delegate stewardship responsibility to halt further deterioration of the site. Inside this NOTAM, our new Director for Exhibits, Restoration and Curatorial Services, Rod Bengston, outlines a new exhibit that shares the story and impact of two of the attacking aircraft (Japanese Zero and B5N2 Kate) and our defending aircraft (P-40) that battled over the skies of Pearl Harbor and all Oahu.
