The Inauguration of Ezat Parnia, Ph.D. as the ninth president of the Institution

Saturday, September eighth, Two Thousand and twelve

Pasadena City Hall Courtyard and Centennial Square

Dear Friends of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School:

It has been said that when you are a graduate of Pacific Oaks College, you exhibit pride in having had its transformative experience. Today we gather together to preserve and renew a tradition that has been consecrated by the ages.

This ceremony signifies transition and change, but it also is witness to persistence and permanence. As we celebrate the beginning of a new epoch at Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School, we are reminded that the future of every great institution of higher learning is informed by its past. PacificO aks College and the Children’s School have stood the test of time because we have honored our history, cherished our values, and stayed true to our principles.

The history of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School began when a small group of Quaker parents were so outraged at the violence, racial and ethnic hatred, nationalism, and materialism of the decades between the two world wars and the war years as well that they decided to found a school for young children. When the Children’s School needed educators to teach its progressive curriculum, they began the College. Both institutional divisions have been leaders in serving children through a mission grounded in its social justice heritage, and the preparation of its graduates to be culturally intelligent agents of change serving diverse communities. Additionally, Pacific Oaks is now a proud affiliate of the consortium of colleges that comprise TCS Education System. All of us share in the excitement of this special occasion.

Today we are here to mark another milestone for Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School—the inauguration of President Ezat Parnia. Everyone here—the trustees, faculty, students, staff, alumni, civic leaders, friends and neighbors—is a living testimony to the dreams, hopes and aspirations of all who consider themselves to be a part of the family of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School. It is our shared duty to help this college and children’s school hold fast to its timeless values while making bold strides toward the future. Together we will ensure that Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School remains a place that transforms the lives, lifts the spirits, and enlarges the vision of future students. Together we guarantee that Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School will serve this generation and every generation to come with the same commitment to serving the needs of children through its progressive mission.

Dorothy Farris Chair, Board of Trustees Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School

i & Children’s School

Dear Friends of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School:

Last year at this time, faculty and staff of Pacific Oaks College were charged with enhancing our capacity to serve new students in new ways. To that end, we founded a new School of Education, received the approval to offer several new programs, and modified existing programs in both the School of Education and the School of Human Development and Marital and Family Therapy. Enrollment began to rise as we welcomed an increasing number of learners, the majority of whom heard the call of an alumni corps that is proud to sing our praises.

The arrival of Dr. Parnia in January has led to re-focusing our efforts from surviving to thriving. Fueled by a collaboration of faculty, students, staff, and administrators, we turned from just having a broad strategic plan to a detailed three year master plan. This has led to our creating an even stronger focus on assessing our outcomes and achievements.W e have introduced several initiatives that foster collaboration with community organizations and promote increased enrollment. At the base of Dr. Parnia’s vision is to realign resources and create budget capacity so that we can reinvest in Pacific Oaks College’s commitment to social justice, equity, and cultured-centered education at the college and community level.

With our mission priorities in mind and our determination to strengthen Pacific Oaks College, I am confident that Dr. Parnia will continue to take determined steps to ensure that we have enhanced the quality of services at the highest level so that the Pacific Oaks of the future is secure and sustainable.

Sincerely,

Carl Kalani Beyer, Ph.D. Dean of the College and Founding Dean, School of Education

i ii Pacific Oaks history

The Pacific Oaks Children’s School was founded in 1945 as a means to break down social, economic, ethnic, and racial barriers within post-war society. The pedagogy developed by the Children’s School, centered on experiential learning, in which children are encouraged to explore and play, has been the model for numerous childcare organizations throughout the world.

Recognizing the need to train educators on the emerging curriculum, Pacific Oaks founded a college to train early childhood education. The College received accreditation in 1959. The College currently offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and certificate programs in Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, and teacher credentialing. The majority of students come from the Southern region, but Pacific Oaks also operates educational programs in Chico, Salinas, Sacramento, and Santa Cruz. Pacific Oaks also offers Human Development and Early Childhood Education programs online, offering a convenient format that enables a greater number of working adults to access higher education.

Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School has a long and distinguished history of service, training, and advocacy for the needs of children and families. In 1965, its reputation in early childhood education led to an invitation from the federal government to conduct fast-track training for Project Head Start. The anti-bias curriculum developed at Pacific Oaks College is foundational in teacher training programs throughout the country. Our Master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy was the first in the nation to implement a culture-centered approach with the creation of Latino/a and African-American Family Studies Specializations.

The leadership, faculty, and staff of Pacific Oaks have embraced a vital and vibrant vision for the future, and look forward to collaborating with Dr. Parnia expand our dynamic, culture-centered model of education.

2 Academic Regalia

Academic regalia worn by participants in today’s procession represent a tradition that comes down from the European university of the Middle Ages, and the “town vs. gown” distinction between members of the academic community and the rest of the population is a product of this tradition.

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, American colleges and universities, which had adopted the European tradition, moved to establish uniformity of standards for the design and use of academic costume, but recently, increasing numbers of universities and colleges have adopted institutional colors for their gowns. Generally, the hood lining reflects the official color or colors of the institution granting the degree, while the trimming which binds the hood reflects the discipline in which the degree was awarded.

Hoods are made of the same type of materials as the gowns. The colors of the hood tell both the university that granted the degree and the field in which it was given. The hood lining indicates the university by its colors; the border denotes the academic discipline, according to the following scheme:

Agriculture ...... Maize arts, Letters, Humanities ...... White Commerce, Accountancy, Business ...... Light Brown Dentistry ...... Lilac Economics ...... Copper Education ...... Light Blue Engineering ...... Orange Fine Arts, including Architecture ...... Brown Forestry ...... Russet Journalism ...... Crimson Law ...... Purple library Science ...... Lemon Yellow Medicine ...... Green Music ...... Pink Nursing ...... Apricot Oratory ...... Silver Gray Pharmacy ...... Olive Green Philosophy ...... Dark Blue physical Education ...... Sage Green public Administration including foreign service ...... Peacock Blue public Health ...... Salmon Pink Science ...... Golden Yellow Social Work ...... Citron Theology ...... Scarlet veterinary Science ...... Gray

Dr. Ezat Parnia, President Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School 45/55 Eureka Street Pasadena, CA 91103

Dear Dr. Parnia,

Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment as the ninth President of Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School.

Pacific Oaks is an institution with a rich and prolific history. Our founding families brought an inspiring vision, strong moral convictions and high standards of excellence to our College and Children’s School. Since our founding in 1945 we have had a profound impact on the lives of children and families and have trained professionals who have influenced the field of education and human services far beyond the borders of our community. In 1945, Molly Morganroth the first Director of the Children’s School, wrote, “In a democracy, the welfare of the individual and the group are both important and must move forward together. The welfare of each becomes the concern of all.W e are dependent upon one another. Each can contribute, each has the power to free and enrich the lives of others.”

Today your belief in the philosophic concept of community will lead Pacific Oaks into the future. You have graciously and respectfully reached out to every constituent bringing our community together. We are all so fortunate to benefit from your example.

On behalf of myself and the children, parents and teachers at the Children’s School, I welcome you to Pacific Oaks and congratulate you on your inauguration.

Best wishes,

Jane E. Rosenberg Executive Director Pacific Oaks Children’s School

Ezat Parnia, Ph.D. President, Pacific Oaks College 45/55 Eureka Street Pasadena, CA 91103

Dr. Parnia,

Our sincere congratulations on being named the ninth President of Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School. You have arrived at such a challenging and complex time: in the field of education and in our society. It is reassuring to know that we have a leader who is more than capable in naming, navigating and negotiating our presence and potency as a leader in the co-creation of a more just society. A portion of our institutional narrative states:

Founded more than 60 years ago by a small group of Quaker families, Pacific Oaks College has remained dedicated to the fundamental Quaker principles of inclusion, social justice, and the valuing of every human being. Three basic concepts underlie the educational philosophy at Pacific Oaks:

• that every individual has a fundamental worth; • that growth is a dynamic and life-long process; • and that every individual has a unique identity and human potential.

You have embraced those philosophical tenets and demonstrated a desire to honor our culture, while creating new cultural spaces for us to explore.

During your brief tenure, we have been a witness to your intelligence, as evidenced by your active participation in valuing our history; impacting our present and charting our future. We have witnessed the technological enhancements on our campuses: to support the research and educational experiences of students, staff and faculty.W e have seen you attending classes: sharing with students your zeal and enthusiasm for servant leadership. We have watched you in the community: making connections, supporting businesses and sharing the Pacific Oaks’ story. We have felt the pride when you were named one of the top 50 Innovative Men of 2012. And we have felt the joy of having a feeling of stability, and onward movement.

So, personally and on behalf of the core, academic faculty of Pacific Oaks College, we salute you. We welcome your presence. And we look forward to many fruitful and effective encounters: in the Pacific Oaks Community, society and the world. In essence, Dr. Parnia, you rock!

With sincerity and appreciation,

Cheryl Greer Jarman Faculty “Elder”, Representing all Academic Faculty

Dear President Parnia:

On behalf of the staff of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School, I congratulate you on your appointment as our ninth President and welcome you to the Pacific Oaks family.

The famous “PO way” is to empower others to dream while giving them the tools and structure they need to build those dreams. You have just the right balance of heart and mind to do the same for the staff at Pacific Oaks. You help our plans and ideas take flight by building a launching pad, telling us you believe in us, and checking to make sure our pilot’s licenses are current before takeoff.

You have probably noticed by now that, for the faculty and staff, working at Pacific Oaks is not just a job. We feel a connection to its history and see our influence on its future.W e appreciate the way you both honor our legacy and nurture our vision. You are a part of the PO family now. We know you will leave your own special mark; don't be surprised when Pacific Oaks leaves its mark on you.

With appreciation,

Dear Dr. Parnia,

On behalf of the student body, I wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations as we formally celebrate your new role as the President of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School.

Since stepping foot on campus in January you have demonstrated your inclination towards proactively engaging with students as you seek to better understand our experience and the rich history of our institution. We are grateful to the committed leadership you have already shown in not only maintaining that legacy, but also working to advance and grow it for the good of our school and the communities we seek to serve.

We are excited about the wealth of experience you bring with you in education and leadership, and your dedication to the personal and professional development of adult learners. Dear Dr. Parnia,

I had the honor to co-chair the initiative to find the ninth president of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School. It was a six-month project that called on us to review the credentials of college presidents, provosts, deans, and other senior administrators from institutions across the nation who were motivated to become part of the Pacific Oaks community. In the end we found a person with the knowledge, experience, passion, and above all, vision for continuing what Pacific Oaks does best: providing an engaged, community-focused approach to education—one driven by a commitment to social justice and the value of each individual to contribute. That person, Dr. Parnia, was you.

And we believe in you, President Parnia, to lead the college and children’s school to new heights so that its mission may reach more people seeking to become agents of change for the greater good.

Pasadena is a community where education matters, where educational institutions thrive, and where support of public education is considered a good investment. From its founding more than 60 years ago, Pacific Oaks has demonstrated the value of excellent early childhood education for all children, and the value of developmentally appropriate education for all learners, children and adults.

The Foundation is delighted to know that Pacific Oaks will continue its strong partnership with the Pasadena Unified School District and the Pasadena Educational Foundation. It is entirely appropriate that your inauguration takes place in the historic City Hall of the city of Pasadena, a City of Learning.
