Gilman2 Introduction This rapidly growing, large, evergreen, Florida native shrub has medium- to coarse-textured, olive green, leathery leaves and small, greenish-yellow flowers (Fig. 1). The many slender, drooping branches of Anise give a rounded, open canopy in the shade, ideal for natural settings, or can be pruned into dense hedges, screens, or windbreaks in sunny locations. Branches often root when they touch the ground and root sprouts appear several years after planting. This adds to the density of the shrub. The slightly fragrant spring flowers are followed by brown, star-shaped, many-seeded pods which cling to the stems. The leaves of Anise give off a distinctive fragrance of licorice when bruised or crushed. S. chinensis fruit extracts and their active compounds are potent antioxidants and mitoprotectors exerting anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti- cancer, and anti-aging effects. S. chinensis polyphenolic compounds—flavonoids, phenolic acids and the major constituents dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans are responsible for the S. chinensis antioxidant activities. Accepted 28 September, 2011 Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis was used to evaluate the genetic variation of Piper spp. from Hainan, China. 247 polymorphic bands out of a total of 248 (99.60%) were generated from 74 individual plants of Piper spp. The overall level of genetic diversity among Piper spp. in Hainan was high, with the mean Shannon information index (I) of 0.2843 and the mean Nei’s genetic diversity (H) of 0.1904. The genetic similarity (GS) coefficient ranged from 0.548 to 0.976 within 74 individual plants of Piper spp., and the within-species genetic distance ranged from 0.104 to 0.28. Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrogram showed that P. kadsura is the most divergent and the most distant of the 11 species, and that P. hainanense and P. bonii , are closely related as well as P. sarmentosum and P. betle . The diversity analysis unambiguously distinguished all Piper spp. The high levels of genetic diversity in Jianfengling and Diaoluoshan demonstrate that conservation of wild resources of Piper in these two localities is more effective than that in Limushan, Wuzhishan, Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden and Danzhou. -

Leaves ¾ - 5 inches (2 - 13 cm) long and ⅜ - 3 inches (1 - 8 cm) wide, oval with tapering leaf bases, pointed tips, and widely spaced teeth along the margins; spicy-smelling when crushed. Leaf stalks up to ⅜ - 2¾ inches (1 - 7 cm) long. Female and male flowers are on the same plant, drooping on delicate stalks 1 - 2 inches (2.5 - 5 cm) long; both female and male flowers with 9 - 12 rounded, red and green tepals (petals + sepals). Female flowers with 6 - 12 pistils, male flowers with stamens embedded in a small, flattened disk. Fruit a round or oval, red berry, up to ⅜ inch (4 - 8 mm) wide and ½ inch (0.5 - 1.5 cm) long, dangling in small, loose bunches. STAR ANISE (Illicium) Cat Meholic and Melinda Zoehrer This year we have selected the genus Illicium as our featured woody plant. Illicium is an uncommon garden plant with fantastic attributes. The genus Illicium has traditionally been the sole member of the Illiciaceae, but more modern sources recognize it as being in the Schisandraceae (the starvine family). Those of us that enjoy the spice and earthiness of “star anise” have appreciated the attributes of Illicium verum, a species native to southwest China. The genus Illicium has approximately 30 species, but only two are native to the United States, I. floridanum and I. parviflorum. In cultivation these two species have been joined by I. anisatum, I. henryi, I. lanceolatum, I. parviflorum, and some have also been bred with I. mexicanum to create a range of interesting evergreen shrubs for the garden. Over the last two years UDBG staff has been acquiring both the straight species and unusual cultivars Illicium ‘Woodlanders Ruby’ in Claudia Bradley’s garden to add to the sale. Photo: Claudia Bradley All the Illicium offered for sale are broadleaved evergreen plants and most have lustrous thick leaves.
