ANDREW LUM / DAVID JUILLET YOUNG ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP 2020 COMPETITION RULES In 1991, the Ann Arbor Concert Band established a scholarship competition for high school students who are outstanding wind or percussion instrumentalists. The winner of the award received a $1,000 scholarship as well as the opportunity to perform with the band at the final concert of the season. The generosity of Dave Juillet, who passed away in 1994, made the first awards possible. In July 1993, the family of Andrew Lum, a promising musician and football player at Huron High, and his mentor Dave Juillet established the Andrew J. Lum Young Artist Scholarship Fund in his memory. The award perpetuates his high standards of excellence through hard work, determination, personal dedication and enthusiasm for music. competition rules To be eligible to compete for this scholarship, the applicant must be a high school wind or percussion instrumentalist who lives in the State of Michigan. If a finalist has immediate family, or close friends or private instructor who is/are members is Ann Arbor Concert Band, let Don Henig know. Applicants must prepare a solo piece that will be performed with the band at the May 3, 2020 AACB concert if the applicant is selected. The solo must be available with band accompaniment that can be borrowed, rented or purchased by AACB. Please contact Don Henig ASAP if you are having difficulty locating an appropriate solo. We appreciate any information you might have regarding where AACB can rent, borrow or purchase the band accompaniment for your solo. Applicants must submit the application form plus a pre-audition recording (mp3, mp4, or wav format) to the Ann Arbor Concert Band C/O [email protected] by Saturday, February 15th, 2020. We would prefer not to have videos or to have you identify yourself on the recording. Audition recordings will be reviewed by the AACB Board and conductor to determine each finalist’s eligibility to participate in the live audition. The recording must be the piece to be performed at the May concert. The audition recording performance must include piano accompaniment, as this demonstrates the ability to play in tune with another instrument. The recording must be clearly labeled or identified with the soloist's name and title of the work. Finalists selected from the audition recordings will be invited to perform with piano accompaniment at a live audition on March 9, 2020, between 6-7:30 p.m. For the live audition, soloists must furnish their own pianist. The audition solo must also be the piece to be played with the band at the May concert. If you cannot find a pianist, contact Don Henig as quickly as possible. You will receive detailed information regarding this. Live auditions will be heard by a panel of judges. The judges are professional musicians and are not in the AACB. The finalists will be notified of their audition time and location, and all contestants are scheduled on the same day. All finalists will be notified of the judges’ decision by phone or e-mail. The decision of the panel is final. The panel reserves the right to withhold the award if none of the applicants are deemed meritorious. The winner will receive a $1000 award from the Andrew J Lum and David R. Juillet Young Artist Scholarship Fund and will be required to perform the audition solo at the Ann Arbor Concert Band's May 3, 2020 concert. A runner-up will be selected and named at the same time as the designation of the winner. If the winner can't fulfill the obligations, the runner-up will then receive the scholarship and appear with the AACB. The award must be used for post high-school education or to further music education. The scholarship award will be paid, on behalf of the recipient, directly to a 501(c)(3) institution/organization (college, university, non- profit music camp, etc.). The recipient will have the responsibility for notifying the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation of his/her designation and will be given information for that purpose.
