    Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain.

    THE KANPE FOUNDATION’S MANIFESTO - ON THE EVE OF THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI. January 8th, 2020 (MONTREAL): Every January 12th, for the past 9 years, critiques of the mismanagement of funds allocated to earthquake relief reappear in the news cycle. The Haitian government, NGOs and international actors have been singled out for their inability to efficiently collaborate in crisis management, relocation of displaced citizens or reconstruction of devastated areas. As an organization aiming to help the less fortunate, KANPE has chosen - since its inception - to look beyond specific failures or crises and focus instead on potential successes, by supporting rural communities and accompanying them on their journey towards autonomy. While we recognize the numerous challenges that Haitians still face, we also bear witness to many success stories that go unreported in the media. These significant results are often submerged in unfairly critical coverage of Haiti, as the international community can have a tendency to ignore the country’s rich culture and history. We have made it our priority to share these achievements. And, to celebrate Haiti’s culture while also highlighting the country’s strengths and wealth. The last decade reminded us of the will, courage and determination of Haitians. At KANPE, we work with Haitian communities, partners and experts along with Canadian and American collaborators and donors who, like us, do not give up on seeking out and implementing solutions, despite the crises and injustices affecting the country.     CONSTELLATION La critica musicale ha spesso identificato alcuni generi musicali con le città nelle quali si erano sviluppati, arrivando a far coincidere musica e toponomastica come nel caso del Canterbury sound o del Madchester. In realtà di solito si è trattato di un tentativo di semplificare la realtà per rendere intelligibili fenomeni la cui complessità sarebbe stata di difficile comprensione alla maggioranza dei lettori delle varie riviste del settore; basti pensare alla San Francisco psichedelica, al country di Nashville, all'elettronica berlinese, alla Seattle grunge o a Londra per il punk, ecc. Detto ciò, in pochi avrebbero immaginato che nel novero di queste “capitali” musicali sarebbe apparso il nome di Montreal, principale città del Quebec canadese. Eppure se dovessimo cercare una città con la quale identificare il post- rock degli anni Duemila non potremmo che guardare verso questa metropoli di più di un milione e mezzo di abitanti, se non altro per l’etichetta discografica indipendente Constellation records che vi ha sede. Nata nel 1997, la Constellation si è fin da subito caratterizzata per le “ostiche” scelte musicali e di marketing, dimostrando negli anni un'ammirevole coerenza che le ha permesso di intercettare le espressioni più avanzate e innovative del movimento post-rock canadese – ovvero il meglio del post-rock tout-court –, distinguendosi commercialmente dalle tante etichette indipendenti grazie a confezioni in digipack dominate da colori tenui e da un’originalità grafica e iconografica che diventa determinante nel trasmettere anche visivamente i contenuti musicali. Ma forse per comprendere il percorso qui proposto occorre partire dall’inizio, ovvero dalla definizione di Post-rock.
