Olympic-hopefuls and local heroes young and old will be sailing through the night in this iconic event with past winners including Dean Barker, Ray Davies and Peter Blake. “The OKI 24-hr sailing event is New Zealand’s toughest dinghy race and we have teams from all over the country as well as international sailors competing,” says Murrays Bay Sailing Club Commodore, Scott Leith. Andy Maloney and Nick Heiner (Laser World Champ) and Blair Tuke (49er World & Olympic Champion) are heading the entry list for the race with stiff competition expected from the large contingent of local male and female crews. The OKI 24-Hour Race is a competition for laser sailors held on Lake Pupuke and run by Murrays Bay Sailing Club, a club with a rich history of sailors recognised through Round the World races, national championships, America’s Cup regattas and the Olympics. “Last year’s event was held in stunning sailing conditions with over 90 teams spread across the OKI 24-Hour and OKI 6 hour race for Optimists,” says Leith. “The start of the race is quite unique and really exciting with the sailors in a Le Mans-style mad dash down the hill and launching themselves into the boats.” Auckland Wellington Christchurch 8 Antares Place Level 30 480B Moorhouse Avenue Rosedale 0632 Grand Plimmer Tower 8011 2-6 Gilmer Terrace 0611 (09) 477 0500 (03) 366 0876 (04) 569 2940 www.oki.co.nz There’s a major prize of $2,000 available for the sailor/s who do the most laps in the 24-hour timeframe. -

Melges Promo
# THE WORLD LEADER IN PERFORMANCE ONE DESIGN RACING # # MELGES.COM # # MELGES.COM MELGES BOAT WORKS, INC. was founded by Harry C. Melges, Sr. in 1945. Melges became an instant leader in scow boat design, production and delivery in the U.S., particularly in the Midwest. Harry, Sr. initially built boats out of wood. The first boats produced were flat-bottomed row boats, which provided a core business to keep his vision and the company alive. It wasn't long before he branched into race boat production delivering the best hulls, sails, spars, covers and accessories ensuring his customers stayed on the competitive cutting-edge. Melges (pronounced mel•gis), is one of the most reputable, recognized and respected family names in the sailing industry. The devotion, generosity, perseverance and passion that surrounds the name is undeniable. It will forever be a legendary symbol of quality, excellence and experience that is second-to-none. Early on Harry Sr.’s son, Harry “Buddy” Melges, Jr. was involved in operating the family boat building business. Over time, Buddy established an impressive collection of championship titles and Olympic medals. During the 1964 Olympics, Buddy was awarded a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman and in 1968 won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. In 1972, he won a gold medal in the Soling in Kiel, Germany — the Soling’s official debut in Olympic competition. In the years that followed, Buddy won over 60 major national and international sailing championship titles. They include the Star in 1978 and 1979; 5.5 Metre in 1967, 1973 and 1983; International 50 Foot World Cup in 1989; Maxi in 1991 and the National E Scows in 1965, 1969, 1978, 1979 and 1983. -

Subsequently BYSTANDER has been cherished as the beautiful yacht that she is: a remarkably untampered-with survivor from another age, exuding authenticity and atmosphere while still offering all that one would expect of a motor yacht of her length; a wonderful size that, depending on experience, requires as few crew as one desires - maybe even none. With her after accommodation reinstated following the J-Class tender days, she continues to offer stately comfort for six guests in four cabins, and to turn heads in Riviera anchorages. But authenticity can sometimes come at a cost, and BYSTANDER OF MAN, whilst in commission, is nevertheless in need of a refit. -

'Development of a Vpp Based Rating for J-Class Yachts'
‘Development of a Vpp based rating for J-Class Yachts’ Clay Oliver, Yacht Research International, and John Robinson, Wolfson Unit MTIA. Abstract The J-Class was originally one of a number of level rating classes, developed under the ‘Universal Rule’, rating at 76 feet. The class was designated for each of the three America’s Cup series from 1930 to 1937. Most of the yachts were either scrapped or laid up at the end of the 1930’s, but more recently interest in the class has revived. Following refits and restorations, and one complete rebuild, there is now a class association and interest in further builds is strong, with two new boats already well into construction and fit out. For several years, the J-Class Association has run regattas based upon a Time Correction Factor (TCF) calculated using the standard WinDesign Velocity Prediction Program (Vpp). In 2007, the Association transferred the operation of this rating system to the Wolfson Unit both as a measure of independence and further to refine the process. The form and proportion of the J-Class contrast dramatically with those of the modern yachts which have largely driven developments in VPP hydrodynamic formulations in recent years. This paper describes the some new formulations geared specifically to the J-Class yacht, and generally applicable to the traditional yacht. The fact that the keel and hull of the traditional yacht cannot be rationally delineated is an issue and an approach to obviate this problem is described. Data from 1936 towing tank experiments of 1/24th and 1/8th-scale J-Class models are reanalyzed for new J-Class Vpp formulations. -
