Over six miles of existing railroad was re-routed to 4.5 miles of new track, including a new 1,100 foot rock tunnel adjacent to a 917 foot long steel viaduct. This viaduct would carry trains 133 feet in the air across the Nashua River next to the new dam. The viaduct is now gone, but the supporting stonework can still be seen today below in the river. This project reviews the original construction of the dam as documented in archival photographs and reports. It also develops the construction schedule for the work directly managed by the contractor who took responsibility after October 1, 1901. It then analyzes the productivity of modern plant and equipment supporting construction operations and compares the results with the ones observed more than 100 years ago. Looking at Webster’s Online Dictionary one can derive a literal definition of “Watershed Management,” but what does it mean in the context of DCR’s Office of Watershed Management? A more graphic explanation of a watershed can start to help: a geographic area of land in which all surface and ground water flows downhill to a common point, such as a river, stream, pond, lake, wetland, or estuary. In other parts of the world, the terms “catchment” or “basin” are also used to describe the lands and waters that drain into a specific body of water.     Waterworks System Improvements Integrated Water Supply Improvement Program MWRA’s Integrated Water Supply Improvement Program is a 10-year, $1.7 billion initiative consisting of a series of projects to protect reservoir watersheds, build new water treatment and transmission facilities, and upgrade distribution storage and MWRA and community pipelines. The program improves each aspect of the water system from the watersheds to the consumer to ensure that high quality water reliably reaches to MWRA customers’ taps. The program began in 1995 and the principle components have been completed by 2005. The main program components are as follows: Watershed Protection The watershed areas around Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs are pristine areas with 85% of the land covered in forest or wetlands and about 75% protected from development by direct ownership or development restrictions. MWRA works in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to manage and protect the watersheds. MWRA also finances all the operating and capital expenses for the watershed activities of DCR, including CIP funding for a completed sewer project and on-going land acquisition activities. MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel The 17-mile-long 14-foot diameter tunnel connects the new John J. Carroll Water Treatment Plant at Walnut Hill in Marlborough to the greater Boston area. It is now the main transmission line moving water into the metropolitan Boston area. Once inspection, repairs and interconnections are complete, the old Hultman Aqueduct will be used in parallel as the back-up transmission link. Construction began on the tunnel in 1986 and the completed tunnel placed in service in October 2003.
