The Basques claim their country as a nation and it is easy to see why. Even the most casual visitor cannot help feeling a powerful sense of uniqueness amid the forested hills and timeless villages of the northern Basque provinces. You feel that same uniqueness on the corrugated coastline with its string of tough fishing ports, where Euskara, the Basque language, holds sway above all others. You feel it too in the crowning glories of the Basque Country, the cities of Bilbao and Vitoria, paradigms of cultured, sociable urban life and San Sebastián, a sublime beach resort and boasting some of the finest food in Spain and, some say, in Europe too. Add to all of this the ancient Basque heartland of Navarra, less self-consciously Basque today, but with a colourful identity that also sets it apart. Typically, salt-influenced deep-water successions are poorly imaged in seismic reflection data, and exhumed systems are rare, hence the detailed sedimentology and stratigraphic architecture of these systems remains poorly understood. The exhumed Triassic (Keuper) Bakio and Guernica salt bodies in the Basque–Cantabrian Basin, Spain, were active during deep-water sedimentation. The salt diapirs grew reactively, then passively, during the Aptian–Albian, and are flanked by deep-water carbonate (Aptian–earliest Albian Urgonian Group) and siliciclastic (middle Albian– Cenomanian Black Flysch Group) successions. The study compares the depositional systems in two salt-influenced minibasins, confined (Sollube basin) and partially confined (Jata basin) by actively growing salt diapirs, comparable to salt-influenced minibasins in the subsurface.

El monte Arrontegi, en Barakaldo, ha sido históricamente un emplazamiento clave para el control de la ría del Nervión. Ello explica que se construyeran allí en época medieval las conocidas como Torres de Luchana. A lo largo del siglo XIX jugó un papel importante durante las diferentes guerras carlistas. Reflejo de ello son las trin- cheras que aún se conservan hoy día. Por todo ello se llevó a cabo una intervención arqueológica que permitiera sentar las bases para su estudio desde el punto de vista de la arqueología de los campos de batalla. Aquí se recogen los resultados de dicha intervención. SUMMARY. The mount Arrontegi, in Barakaldo, has historically been a key site for the control of the Nervion river. This explains that known as the towers of Luchana built it there in medieval times. Throughout the 19th century, it played an important role during the various Carlist Wars. Reflection of it are trenches that are still preserved today. Therefore carried out an archaeological intervention that would lay the groundwork for their study from the point of view of battlefield archaeology.

The international treaties include: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in Washington on 03/03/1973 (CITES; www.cites.org); the Convention on Migratory Species, signed in Bonn on 23/06/79 (CMS); the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands, signed in Ramsar on 02/02/1971 (Ramsar); the Convention on Biological Diversity (Biodiv), signed in Rio de Janeiro on 05/06/1992; and the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, signed in Washington on 02/12/1946 (IWCoffice). On the other hand, the Spanish Government signed the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, in Bern on 19/09/1979 (Bern Convention), a regional treaty for the European conservation of wildlife and the natural environment, by means of inter-state cooperation. The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR Convention) was signed also by Spain in Paris, on 22/09/1992.
