5 A többi halottak pedig meg nem elevenedének, mígnem betelik az ezer esztendő. Ez az első feltámadás. 6 Boldog és szent, akinek része van az első feltámadásban: ezeken nincs hatalma a második halálnak; hanem lesznek az Istennek és a Krisztusnak papjai, és uralkodnak ő vele ezer esztendeig. A 17. század az újkor prófétáinak ideje. Egymás után tűntek fel a hírnökök, akik hosszabb- rövidebb műveikben arról próbálták meggyőzni olvasóikat, hogy személyes kapcsolatban állnak Istennel, így tökéletesen tudják értelmezni a természet jeleit, a csillagok járását, próféciáikból pedig részletesen megismerhetőek a jövő eseményei. A reneszánsz magával hozta a különböző hagyományok keveredését, melyben -a neoplatonista filozófia elterjedésének köszönhetően- hangsúlyos szerepet játszott a ciklikus történelemszemlélet, melyet Illés próféta hatezer éves világszemléletével és Szent Ágoston hétezer éves világhét-elméletével ötvöztek. A század eseményeinek tükrében a földön megvalósuló krisztusi királyság jelenthette a “fényt az alagút végén”. A millenarizmus eredetét az ószövetségi könyvekben találjuk, mikor Jahve azt ígéri híveinek, hogy hitükkel és kitartásukkal még a földi életben elnyerhetik méltó jutalmukat. A kereszténység megjelenése után is továbbélt ez az ótestamentumi ígéret, s hamar összekapcsolódott a reménnyel, hogy az utolsó időkben Krisztus visszatér a födre, eljövetelekor pedig feltámadnak a halottak és együtt uralkodnak vele. A krisztusi királyság -néhányak szerint- pontosan ezerévig fog tartani, majd a Góg és Magóg seregei ellen folytatott utolsó nagy harc következik, végül az Utolsó Ítélet zárja földi létünk történetét. Dolgozatomhoz a kiindulást Keserű Bálint 1996-ban napvilágot látott, Rajongók Erdélyben című tanulmánya nyújtotta, melyben a szerző arra hívja fel a figyelmet, hogy a magyar irodalmon belül az eddigieknél sokkal nagyobb jelentőséget kellene tulajdonítanunk a profétikus irodalomnak 3 DOI: 10.15774/PPKE.BTK.2016.008 és az ehhez kapcsolódó publicisztikának.1 Rövid, problémafelvető értekezésében Keserű egyenesen az ilyen típusú munkák “áradatáról” beszél az 1630 és 1660 közötti évtizedekben. Kiemeli, hogy Erdély szellemi élete szinte egyedülállónak tekinthető, mert folyamatos kapcsolatban állt a nyugat- európai filozófiai és irodalmi áramlatokkal, frissen reagált ezekre, s mégis, mintha a spiritualisztikus irodalom és propaganda jóformán érintetlenül hagyta volna.2 De vajon tényleg így történt? Johann Heinrich Alsted 1629-ben érkezett Gyulafehérvárra, s vele együtt jött két tanítótársa, Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld és Ludwig Philipp Piscator is. A herborni tudósok Bethlen Gábor hívására érkeztek a fejedelemségbe, hogy az újonnan alapított akadémián tanítsanak, s annak európai hírnevét növeljék. “Megjelenésükkel vitathatatlanul fejlődésnek indult az erdélyi szellemi élet, megélénkült a Nyugatra irányuló peregrináció, működésbe lendült a fejedelmi nyomda, és pezsgő vallási viták alakultak ki a protestáns vallások különböző felekezetei között.”3 Alsted erdélyi útja előtt nem sokkal, 1627-ben jelent meg leghíresebb millenarista műve, a Diatribe de mille annis apocalypticis. Saját, református körén belül elfogadhatatlan volt a Diatribe középpontjába állított millenarista tétel - hiszen Kálvin követői tételesen is tiltották az ezeréves krisztusi királyság földi megvalósulását – ám az evangélikusok annál szívesebben hivatkoztak rá. From the beginning of the religious wars in Germany, to the peace of Munster, scarcely any thing great or remarkable occurred in the political world of Europe in which the Reformation had not an important share. All the events of this period, if they did not originate in, soon became mixed up with, the question of religion, and no state was either too great or too little to feel directly or indirectly more or less of its influence. Against the reformed doctrine and its adherents, the House of Austria directed, almost exclusively, the whole of its immense political power. In France, the Reformation had enkindled a civil war which, under four stormy reigns, shook the kingdom to its foundations, brought foreign armies into the heart of the country, and for half a century rendered it the scene of the most mournful disorders. It was the Reformation, too, that rendered the Spanish yoke intolerable to the Flemings, and awakened in them both the desire and the courage to throw off its fetters, while it also principally furnished them with the means of their emancipation. And as to England, all the evils with which Philip the Second threatened Elizabeth, were mainly intended in revenge for her having taken his Protestant subjects under her protection, and placing herself at the head of a religious party which it was his aim and endeavour to extirpate. In Germany, the schisms in the church produced also a lasting political schism, which made that country for more than a century the theatre of confusion, but at the same time threw up a firm barrier against political oppression.

    Thirty Years' War (Overview) The Thirty Years' War, which raged from 1618 until 1648, embroiled most of Europe in a conflict that dramatically changed not only the map but also the balance of European power. By the end of the war much of Germany was in ruins, the Habsburgs were no longer masters of the continent, and the wars of religion which had ravaged Europe since the early 16th century were finally over. The immediate cause of the conflict was a crisis within the Habsburg family's Bohemian branch, but the war also owed much to the religious and political crises caused by the Reformation and the competition between monarchs, particularly the Habsburgs of the Holy Roman Empire, various German princes, and the monarchs of Sweden and France. Underlying Causes One of the most significant issues that led to the Thirty Years' War was the Protestant Reformation. That movement was both religiously divisive and politically destabilizing. It is difficult to separate religion and politics, for at the time they were intertwined. What began as an attempt to correct abuses within the Catholic Church eventually led to a number of violent conflicts within that institution as well as between nations. For example, among the various German principalities, many vied against their overlord, the Catholic Holy Roman emperor, for control over religion. In September 1555, the contending parties met and concluded an agreement, the Peace of Augsburg. An important aspect of the peace was the principle of cuius regio, eius religio (Latin for "whose district, his religion"), which granted each state's ruler religious freedom within his state.

    1 Primary Source 4.7 THE THIRTY YEARS’ WAR (1618–1648)1 The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) began as a religious war between Protestants and Catholics in Central Europe. Gradually, however, the Ottoman Empire and France joined the Protestants in order to undermine the power of the Catholic Habsburg Empire. Ultimately, most of Europe became involved. The war resulted in horrific violence and destruction, as the main combatants foraged in the territories environing battlefields, denuding them of food, fuel, and other supplies. The worst damage occurred in the German lands, where up to one- third of the population was annihilated. Peace treaties signed in 1648 ended both the Thirty Years’ War and the Dutch Revolt, or the Eighty Years’ War, and established a political balance of power which, despite some intermittent warfare, lasted until the French Revolutionary Wars. The Protestant princes of Germany formed a military alliance, the Protestant Union, in 1608 in response to Catholic demands for the return of former church lands. The excerpt below, taken from a letter written in 1608 by the elector of Saxony, a Lutheran, to his representative at the Imperial Diet (assembly), reflects the hostilities between Protestants and Catholics in the German lands. How violently the restless Jesuits and their followers are exerting themselves to undo, by their absurd interpretations and preposterous attacks, the precious and solemnly ratified Religious Peace [of Augsburg]2 which was drawn up long years ago for many weighty reasons by his Roman Imperial Majesty and all the estates of the empire, is but too clear.

    College of Arts & Sciences Department of History Dr. Michael Brose Spring 2016 The Cross and the Arquebus A Look at the German Reformation as a Revolution By Hunter Harp Introduction The political repercussion of the Protestant Reformation are often overlooked, with most attention in scholarship focused on the changes in theological thinking and church structure. But to be clear, the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, often considered to be the start of the modern era and the birth of the nation-state concept, had its origins in the Reformation. Though all aspects and theological denominations of the Protestant Reformation are crucial to the development of this concept, the spread of Lutheranism in Germany is perhaps most critical to those political events. The German Reformation did not just affect the way individuals interacted with Christianity; it changed the functions and powers of the state as well, giving the state far more control than it had during the Middle Ages. It is for this reason that the German Reformation should be considered as a true political revolution. Term Definitions In order to know what makes the German Reformation a revolution, it is necessary to define a few terms. A particularly useful definition of revolution, comes from Jack A. Goldstone, as “the forcible overthrow of a government through mass mobilization (whether military or civilian or both) in the name of social justice, to create new political institutions.”1 Goldstone does not define what social justice is in his book; Revolutions: A Very Short Introduction. Based on the arguments presented in the book it is unlikely that social justice is related to egalitarianism and would be more akin to the Oxford English dictionary’s definition of “justice at the level of a society or state as regards the possession of wealth, commodities, opportunities, 1 Jack A.

Confessional controversies, political struggles, wars, and plagues left traces in Lutherans' dream images. Besides contemporary events, religion played central role in shaping individual’s dreaming experiences. Between the 1530s and the 1730s, dreams were categorized according to their natural, divine, and demonic causes. Dreams that delivered divine messages provided consolation and guidance in difficult times. Meanwhile, ways of dealing with dreams reflected confessionalized knowledge and Lutheran identity. Moreover, different parties within the Lutheran church polemicized dreams in controversies. Lutheran pastors, professors, theological writers and other professionals took great interest in dreams. They recorded dreams in their letters, pastoral notes, diaries, writing calendars and autobiographies. The dreaming subjects underwent generational shift, and each generation faced different realities. Except for these “collective” aspects, there were personal concerns in Lutherans' dream narratives. Some Lutherans exchanged dreams as ways of building relationships. Others considered dreams as markers of life phases and of spiritual development.
