  • Happy Independence Day to the Philippines!
Happy Independence Day to the Philippines! Saturday, June 12, 2021, is Philippines Independence Day, or as locals call it, “Araw ng Kasarinlan” (“Day of Freedom”). This annual national holiday honors Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippines flag for the first time and declared this date as Philippines Independence Day. Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa designed the flag of the Philippines, which is famous for its golden sun with eight rays. The rays symbolize the first eight Philippine provinces that fought against Spanish colonial rule. After General Aguinaldo raised the flag, the San Francisco de Malabon marching band played the Philippines national anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” for the first time. Spain, which had ruled the Philippines since 1565, didn’t recognize General Aguinaldo’s declaration of independence. But at the end of the Spanish-American War in May 1898, Spain surrendered and gave the U.S. control of the Philippines. In 1946, the American government wanted the Philippines to become a U.S. state like Hawaii, but the Philippines became an independent country. The U.S. granted sovereignty to the Philippines on July 4, 1968, through the Treaty of Manila. Filipinos originally celebrated Independence Day on July 4, the same date as Independence Day in the U.S. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal changed the date to June 12 to commemorate the end of Spanish rule in the country. This year marks 123 years of the Philippines’ independence from Spanish rule. In 2020, many Filipinos celebrated Independence Day online because of social distancing restrictions.

Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date ABSTRACT Filipino culture was founded through the amalgamation of many ethnic and cultural influences, such as centuries of Spanish colonization and the immigration of surrounding Asiatic groups as well as the long nineteenth century’s Race of Nations. However, the events of 1898 to 1914 brought a sense of national unity throughout the seven thousand islands that made the Philippine archipelago. The Philippine-American War followed by United States occupation, with the massive domestic support on the ideals of Manifest Destiny, introduced the notion of distinct racial ethnicities and cemented the birth of one national Philippine identity. The exploration on the Philippine American War and United States occupation resulted in distinguishing the three different analyses of identity each influenced by events from 1898 to 1914: 1) The identity of Filipinos through the eyes of U.S., an orientalist study of the “us” versus “them” heavily influenced by U.S.

COMPLETE NATIONAL ANTHEMS OF THE WORLD: 2013 EDITION ORCHESTRATED BY PETER BREINER SLOVAK RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA • SLOVAK STATE PHILHARMONIC, KOŠICE* PETER BREINER, CONDUCTOR When I started arranging and recording national anthems some 17 years ago, nobody expected the project would become so big and popular. In the meantime, it has been an important part of two Summer Olympics and numerous other sporting, cultural and social events. It’s hard to imagine the amount of time and work that has been invested into this endeavour, and it could not have been done without the incredible efforts and expertise of several anthem experts, all the musicians, but mainly without the extraordinary recording team that has been involved in this project from its beginning – sound engineer Otto Nopp and Ladislav Krajcovic. This is an extraordinary project and any other existing anthem collection does not come close, in completeness, quality of the research or the size of the orchestral forces used. Every time this album is updated and released, the reactions are always overwhelming - from uncountable press articles and radio/TV shows all the way to special archbishops’ blessings. I hope this latest version, with its unprecedented number of anthems, will be no less appreciated. Peter Breiner National anthems tell the story of the country, its hopes, its dreams, its goals, its struggles and its history. To learn a country’s national anthem is to get a deeper knowledge of the country, and knowledge of other nations is the first step towards cooperation and understanding between peoples. National anthems, as we know them today, started in Europe as praises to the ruler.

  • The Postcolonial Problem of Choosing an Anthem
Postcolonial Text, Vol 9, No 1 (2014) “Meet the New Boss—Same as the Old Boss”: The Postcolonial Problem of Choosing an Anthem Christopher (Kit) Kelen University of Macau In his essay, “Postcoloniality and the Artifice of History,” Dipesh Chakrabarty discusses the co-achievement of “European imperialism and third-world nationalism” and “the universalization of the nation-state as the most desirable form of political community.” For Chakrabarty, “the universalist propositions of ‘modern’ (European) political philosophy” condemn the third-world historian to knowing Europe as the home of the modern. From this follows “the everyday subalternity of non-Western histories.” Traffic between the dominant and the subaltern narratives results in a collaborative project, that of “provincializing ‘Europe,’ the ‘Europe’ that modern imperialism and third-world nationalism have, by their collaborative venture and violence, made universal” (19). Nation, in the Modern Sense Nation, in the modern sense,1 is a Western idea. Its acceptance as the basis of a world order of inter-national relations has guaranteed the imitation of European models by other-than-European peoples. National symbols have naturally been a key mechanism for the competitive mimesis demanded of new polities wishing to enter the fold. Furthermore, national anthems have been an affective lubricant greasing the wheels to make functional what I will call the paradox of the uniformity of differences. Paradoxically, while the anthem appears to be a celebration of distinct national identity, it is participation in a global system of signs—national anthems—that becomes key to state power and its codes. In the serious world of sincere nations and nationalists, uniformity of differences is revealed in the fact that the overwhelming majority of the world’s national anthems are written and arranged according to the rules of Western poetics and musical forms.
