Infosys to manage Bharti Airtel’s mobile wallet service News, February 28, 2012

Bharti Airtel has selected Infosys for managing its mobile wallet services. As per the agreement, Airtel will deploy Infosys' WalletEdge technology to support cashless payments.

The Infosys platform is a scalable platform which can support large volume of transactions annually. Delivered through a private cloud, it uses a shared services framework that allows members to process payment instructions seamlessly and cost efficiently.

Currently, the Airtel Money service is available in over 300 cities across India. The service allows Airtel customers to load cash in their online account and use this money to pay bills, recharge accounts, shop at over 7,000 merchant outlets and transact online.

Launches of similar nature have taken place in the recent past. For instance, MasterCard announced the launch of its open-loop Worldwide Mobile Money Partnership programme, in partnership with Comviva, a mobile financial solution provider. The partnership aims to help financially under-served consumers globally access mainstream financial services as also make purchases, transfer funds and pay bills via their mobile phones.

Also, HDFC Bank and Movida had also launched a mobile payment service that allows customers to make payments through their mobile phones.

The launch of such services can be attributed to the fact that India has more mobile phones in use than the number of bank accounts.
