Sketchbook The Farewell Powell movie is closer to the book, but Mitchum and Rampling are neat together in a somewhat different movie plot. Just finished reading this aloud for the past 10 days. Mitchum's film? Nev March The Mitchum film makes a number of changes to the book. I'd stick with the book. Not sure if it's on PBS--I found it on demand free. Jun 04, Stephen rated it it was amazing Shelves: My Lovelyebookshardboiledcrime My Lovely, noir Farewell, detectives Definitely My Lovely favorite Chandlerbeating out The Big Sleep by a star and more than a dozen memorable lines. Add in a classic main character and a solid plot and you have a nice shiny bundle of win. His entertainment value is off the charts and he cracks wiser than anyone this side of Sam Spade. Best of all though, the man is incapable of cutting slack My Lovely giving inches and is saltier than the Pacific Ocean. Fairly typical noir stuff My Lovely very well executed and paced to perfection by Chandler. The real star of the show. There may be others My Lovely good but it is Farewell for me to Farewell any better. I lit my pipe again. Nice use of the subjunctive mood. The end of my foot itched, but my bank account was still trying to crawl under a duck. There was a large bare patch around a tough-looking palm tree. A line Farewell stiff yellowish half-washed clothes jittered on a rusty wire in the side yard. Her face was gray and puffy. Farewell body was thick in a Farewell outing flannel bathrobe Farewell moons past color and design. My Lovely descriptions materialized in front of me more than pages of less My Lovely prose could accomplish. My Lovely felt like I was there. When another reader posts Farewell about one of my favorite books, I stop and think about how much I loved that book. I dropped what I was reading and read it again. Great reads. This book is My Lovely and one of the greats with the voice and turn-of-phrase that many have tried to duplicate and Farewell failed. I highly recommend this book. Private detective Philip Marlowe is investigating a dead- end missing person case when he sees a felon, Moose Malloy, barging into a nightclub My Lovely Florian's, looking for his ex-girlfriend Velma Valento. The club has changed owners, so no one now there knows her. Malloy ends up killing the black owner of the club My Lovely escaping. The My Lovely case is assigned to Lt. Nulty, a Los Angeles Police detective who has no interest in the murder of a black man. My Lovely advises Nulty to look for Malloy's girlfriend, but Nulty prefers to let Marlowe do the routine legwork My Lovely rely on finding Malloy based on his huge size and loud clothes. Marlowe decides to follow up and My Lovely for the girl. First of all I'm so partial to R. Chandler's books that I'd easily give only the titles three stars,and this gem is definitely a five-star title. Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler Farewell Angeles, My Lovely A run-down street of seedy shop fronts and My Lovely neon signs. Music from My Lovely features a lonely horn. The camera pans up to a second-story window of a flophouse. In the window, his hat pushed back, his tie undone, Philip Marlowe lights another cigaret and waits for the cops to arrive. Farewell is ready to tell his story. These opening shots are so evocative of Raymond Farewell immortal Marlowe, archtypical private eye, Farewell the underbelly of Los Angeles, that if we're Chandler fans we hold our breath. Is the ambience going to be maintained, or will this be another campy rip-off? Half an hour into the movie, we relax. It is, indeed, the most evocative of My Lovely the private detective movies we have had in the My Lovely few years. It is not as great as Roman Polanski's " Chinatown ," which was concerned with larger subjects, but in the genre itself there hasn't been anything this good since Hollywood was doing Philip Marlowe the first Farewell around. One reason is that Dick Richardsthe director, takes his material and character absolutely seriously. And neither does Robert Mitchumin what becomes his definitive performance. Mitchum is My Lovely of the great screen presences, and at 57 he seems somehow to be just now coming of age: He was born to play the weary, cynical, doggedly romantic Marlowe. His voice and his face and the way he lights his cigaret are all exactly right, and seem totally effortless. That's his trademark. In a good Mitchum performance, we are never aware he is acting. And it is only when we measure the distances between his characters that we can see what he is doing. I am out here in Los Farewell myself for a few days, and from where I sit in a new highrise on Sunset Blvd. Although everything does finally tie My Lovely in this one as it never did in Chandler's labyrinthine "The Big Sleep"Farewell doesn't matter that much.

After analyzing a whole spectrum of techniques capable of effecting a transition between past and present – blurs, fades, dis- solves, and so on – he concluded: “Our discussions indicate that cinema has not (yet) devel- oped the complexity of tense structures found in literary works”.2 His “yet” (in parentheses) was an instance of laudable caution, as very soon – in some ten–fifteen years – the situation would change drastically, and temporal twists would become a trademark of a new genre that has not (yet) acquired a standardized name: “modular narratives”, “puzzle films”, and “complex films” are among the labels used.3 Here is an example: Christopher Nolan’s Me- mento (2000) contains 85 anachronies (i.e. flashbacks or flashforwards) – something that would have been hard to imagine in 1983.4 Memento is probably an extreme case – the most puzzlingly complex of all complex films – but the tendency towards using more anachronies has become widespread, although in less extreme forms. Kania Jacksonville State University of Alabama Raymond Chandler and His Ambiguous Relationships to Women: A Search for Hidden Meanings within His Crime Novels Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is recognized today as one of the greats of American crime fiction. In the “hard-boiled” pattern of Dashiell Hammett, he is often described as a realistic writer of the American scene in the 1940s. And a dark vision it is, filled with betrayal and dishonesty, wherein even the protagonist is not a hero. A Chandler detective may have more integrity than the other characters in the story, but not that much more. His clients have hidden agendas and devious motives, especially the women. None are pure, some even are diabolical and evil. Chandler began writing crime fiction in his mid-forties, but had been writ­ ing poetry and essays since his college days in England (MacShane 1976: 23). He modeled his first crime stories on those of Dashiell Hammett, whose writing he admired, and sought to have them published in Black Mask, a very suc­ cessful “pulp” magazine where Hammett also published some of his fiction (MacShane 1976: 48-49). His first published short story was “Blackmailers Don’t Shoot,” which he later described as “pure pastiche” (MacShane 1976: 51). In 1939, after five years of writing short stories for various pulps, he produced his first novel, The Big Sleep (MacShane 1976: 61; Freeman 2007: 174-175,177).

At the newspaper's height, circulation was approximatly 18,000 copies. The original editorial collective included Denis Lemon (editor), Martin Corbett - who later was an active member of ACT UP, David Seligman, a founder member of the London Gay Switchboard collective, Ian Dunn of the Scottish Minorities Group, Glenys Parry (national chair of CHE), Suki J. Pitcher, and Doug Pollard, who later went on to launch the weekly gay newspaper, Gay Week (affectionately known as Gweek). Amongst Gay News' early "Special Friends" were Graham Chapman of Monty Python's Flying Circus, his partner David Sherlock, and Antony Grey, secretary of the UK Homosexual Law Reform Society from 1962 to 1970. Gay News was the response to a nationwide demand by lesbians and gay men for news of the burgeoning liberation movement.     REVIEW: SUE GRAFTON’S R IS FOR RICOCHET Ricochet’s Hard-Boiled Bounce Natalie B. Cole R Is for Ricochet, Sue Grafton’s latest alphabetically titled crime novel, borrows its initial plot impetus from Raymond Chan­ dler’s The Big Sleep. Resonant with California wealth, deca­ dence, and indulgent, aging fathers trying to rescue wayward daughters, Grafton’s novel features everywoman Kinsey Mil- hone, who tells us, “my office is small, and as a rule, I’m ig­ nored by the wealthy, who seem to prefer doing business through their attorneys in New York, Chicago, or Los Ange­ les.”1 But not this time. Grafton’s private eye is hired by Nord Lafferty, a wealthy, elderly man, whose whispering voice, ex­ tensive surgical scars, and oxygen tank imply the urgency of his request. Grafton’s private investigator Kinsey Milhone steps out of the shadows of the hard-boiled detective tradition of the 1920s and 30s, the Sam Spades and Philip Marlowes who live not only in the pages of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chan­ dler, but also in the celluloid images of Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Dick Powell.2 These are, metaphorically speaking, big pants to fill, especially in a literary tradition so exclusively figured as masculine. Philip Marlowe calls a minor player in The Big Sleep “a small man in a big man’s world,”3 and both Chandler and Hammett made it clear that being hard­ boiled was a masculine prerogative in their eras. But Grafton has imbued the androgynously named Kinsey Milhone with a toughness all her own, and relocated the menace of Chandler 64 and Hammett’s “mean streets”—the alleys, piers, and rain- slicked streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco—to the con­ temporary California Kinsey inhabits, the “small Southern California town of Santa Teresa.”4 Kinsey’s assignment in R Is for Ricochet is to pick up Lafferty’s daughter Reba from prison, and “supervise” her for a few days to make sure she meets with her parole officer, and avoids gambling, drinking, and other highly enjoyable bad habits from her past.

Kania Jacksonville State University o f Alabama Raymond Chandler and His Ambiguous Relationships to Women: A Search for Hidden Meanings within His Crime Novels Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is recognized today as one of the greats of American crime fiction. In the “hard-boiled” pattern of Dashiell Hammett, he is often described as a realistic writer of the American scene in the 1940s. And a dark vision it is, filled with betrayal and dishonesty, wherein even the protagonist is not a hero. A Chandler detective may have more integrity than the other characters in the story, but not that much more. His clients have hidden agendas and devious motives, especially the women. None are pure, some even are diabolical and evil. Chandler began writing crime fiction in his mid-forties, but had been writ­ ing poetry and essays since his college days in England (MacShane 1976: 23). He modeled his first crime stories on those of Dashiell Hammett, whose writing he admired, and sought to have them published in Black Mask, a very suc­ cessful “pulp” magazine where Hammett also published some of his fiction (MacShane 1976: 48-49). His first published short story was “Blackmailers Don’t Shoot, ” which he later described as “pure pastiche” (MacShane 1976: 51). In 1939, after five years of writing short stories for various pulps, he produced his first novel, The Big Sleep (MacShane 1976: 61 ¡Freeman 2007: 174-175, 177). Six more novels followed {Farewell, My Lovely, 1940; TheHigh Window, 1942; The Lady in the Lake, 1943; The Little Sister, 1949; The Long Goodbye, 1954; Playback, 1958), and in his lifetime three collections of his short stories also were compiled (The Simple Art o f Murder, 1950; Trouble Is My Business, 1950; Pick-up on Noon Street, 1953).
