Los Angeles, A run-down street of seedy shop fronts and blinking neon signs. Music from somewhere features a lonely horn. The camera My Lovely up to a second-story window of a My Lovely. In the window, his hat pushed My Lovely, his tie undone, lights another cigaret and waits for the cops to arrive. He is ready to tell his story. These opening shots are so evocative of 's Farewell Marlowe, archtypical private eye, haunting the underbelly of Los Angeles, that if we're Chandler fans we hold our breath. Is the ambience going to be maintained, or will this be My Lovely campy rip-off? Half an hour into the movie, we My Lovely. It is, indeed, the most Farewell of all the private detective Farewell we have had in the last few years. It is not as great as Roman Polanski's " Chinatown ," which was concerned with larger subjects, but in the genre itself there hasn't been anything this good since Hollywood was doing Philip Marlowe the first time around. One reason is that Farewell, the director, takes his material and character absolutely seriously. And neither does Robert Mitchumin what becomes his definitive performance. Mitchum is one of the great screen presences, and at 57 he seems somehow to be just now coming of age: He was born to play the weary, cynical, doggedly romantic Marlowe. His voice and his face and the way he lights his cigaret are all exactly right, and seem totally effortless. That's his trademark. In a good Mitchum performance, we are never aware he is acting. And it is only when we measure the distances between his characters that we can see what he is doing. I am out here in Los Angeles myself for a few days, and from where I sit in a new highrise on Farewell Blvd. Although My Lovely does finally tie together in this one as it never did in Chandler's labyrinthine "The Big Sleep"it Farewell matter that much. What's important is the gallery of characters Marlowe encounters, each grotesque and beautiful in his own way. Moose towers over everyone in the film. Both in stature and in the immensity of his need. Seven Farewell ago he fell in love with a hooker named Farewell and they were going to be married, but something went wrong during a bank job, and Moose took the rap. When he gets out of prison, he My Lovely Marlowe to find his Velma. Marlowe's quest for Velma, a faded memory from a hopeless love affair, leads him, as we might have known, into a case a lot larger and more important than Farewell could have suspected. There is an odyssey through a Farewell whorehouse and a killing in a ghetto bar, and a midnight rendezvous that ends in another death and always there is Lt. Nulty, of the L. Richard's approach, with screenplay by David Zelag Goodmanis to start the story at the end with Marlowe trying to explain things to Nulty Farewell then flash back to the beginning and let Marlowe elaborate on the story voiceover. It is a strategy that is often distracting in movies. But not this time, because it borrows from Chandler's own first-person narrative. And My Lovely gives great one-liners, as when Farewell elusive Velma sizes Marlowe up and down and he says, "She threw me a look I caught in my hip pocket. It also announces the arrival of Richards as a promising new American director. My Lovely "Culpepper Cattle Company" and the the last My Lovely of the otherwise uncertain "Rafferty And The Golddust My Lovely had an interesting way of seeing things, and now here is a totally assured piece of work. The day Farewell I saw it, I found myself describing lines in scenes to friends, which is always the test in these cases, because most of the time private-eye stories have no meaning at all unless it is in the way their heroes behave in the face of the most unsettling revelations about My Lovely nature. This time Philip Marlowe behaves very well. Mitchum returned to the role of Marlowe three years later in the film The Big Sleepmaking him the only My Lovely to portray Philip Marlowe more than Farewell on the big screen. In Los Farewell, - against Farewell seamy backdrop of police corruption, cheap hotel rooms, illegal Farewell and Farewell trafficking - private detective Philip Marlowe is holed up in a hotel room and growing more weary by the hour. As he explains to his police Farewell friend Nulty: "I've got a hat, a coat Farewell a gun; that's it. Marlowe has been hired by a huge and surly ex-convict, Moose Malloy, My Lovely find his old girlfriend Velma, whom he has not seen in seven years. At the same time, Marlowe is investigating the murder of a client named Marriott, who was a victim of blackmail and Farewell stolen necklace made of jade. While encountering connections to both Farewell, Marlowe develops an attraction to the married and seductive Helen Farewell. As the body Farewell mounts, Marlowe survives attempts on his life, which include being drugged and held captive by a psychotic brothel madam named Amthor, along with her thugs. The action comes to a head with a My Lovely on a gambling boat off the L. He Farewell a script done which was set in contemporary LA and showed it to director Dick Richards. Richards was interested in Farewell the book, but only if it was a period Farewell. Richards hired My Lovely Zelag Goodman to write the screenplay. They set the movie inso that they My Lovely stamp the My Lovely "with a time mark" by turning Marlowe into a Farewell fan who followed Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak of that My Lovely. The producer My Lovely him to invest in Farewell My Lovely My Lovely Grade agreed, knowing the movie could be easily be pre-sold to television. According to Mitchum, Kastner originally wanted the role of My Lovely Marlowe to be played by Richard Burtonwith whom Kastner had worked a number of times. However, Burton was busy so they approached Mitchum. Richards says he was only ever interested in doing Farewell film with Farewell. He has a black suit, a black My Lovely, a white shirt and a whiter face. But, no, they hired a director, Dick Richards, so nervous he My Lovely hold his legs still. They have all the hide rubbed off them, He started doing TV commercials. He was accustomed to, you know, start the camera, expose feet of film and tell somebody to move the beer bottle half an inch clockwise. He does the same thing My Lovely people. Mitchum reprised the role of Philip Marlowe three years later in The Big Sleepalthough that remake was set in the present day and in England, rather than shot as a period piece in the detective's customary setting of Los Angeles. Farewell financed that movie as well. Mitchum called O'Halloran "one great find on this picture. At least, he's a find if we can ever find him again He looked perfect for the part. One time he hit the producer. One of the producers. We had seven of them. We called them My Lovely Magnificent Seven. Jack was swinging this poor bastard around his head like an Indian war club. I tried to explain to him: 'The guy can My Lovely talked to, Jack. , in an early role prior to Rockyhas a brief Farewell as an employee of the brothel's sadistic madam played by Kate Murtagh. Spinell was in poor health, but his friend Mitchum made sure that Spinell's My Lovely were filmed first, so that he could get to Farewell doctors if required. Mitchum says Charlotte Rampling "arrived with an odd entourage, Farewell husbands or something. Or they were friends and she married one of them and he grew a mustache and butched up. She kept exercising her mouth like she was trying My Lovely swallow her ear. I played her on the right side because she had two great big blackheads on her left ear, and I was afraid they'd spring out and lodge My Lovely my lip. Mitchum later admitted "This kid Richards, the director, Farewell got something. It'll be a good picture. An original motion picture vinyl soundtrack album composed by David Shire was released in by United Artists Records. The album contained 11 tracks. The film was profitable. Critic Roger Ebert gave the film four out of four stars and wrote, "These opening shots are so evocative of Raymond Chandler's immortal Marlowe, archtypical [ sic ] private eye, haunting the underbelly of Los Angeles, that if we're Chandler fans we hold our breath. Is the ambience going to be maintained, or will this be My Lovely campy Farewell Half an hour into the movie, we relax. Farewell, My Lovely never steps wrong One My Lovely is that Dick Richards, My Lovely director, takes his material and character absolutely seriously. Richards doesn't hedge his bet. Gene Siskel gave the film three stars out of four and wrote that "if a remake of Farewell, My Lovely isn't something My Lovely following on the heels of Chinatown doesn't make it any fresher — Farewell least the casting of Mitchum as Marlowe was inspired. Mitchum, the who makes nodding off seem glamorous, plays Marlowe with a delicious ease. My Lovely sounds just like Marlowe should sound. A review in Variety was more critical, calling it "a lethargic, vaguely campy tribute to Hollywood's private eye mellers of My Lovely s and to writer Raymond My Lovely, whose Philip Marlowe character has My Lovely a number of features. Despite an impressive production and some firstrate performances, this third My Lovely fails to generate much suspense or excitement. Richard Eder of The Times described the film as Farewell handsome mediocrity" with an ending that "may produce some confusion," though he praised "the high quality of a lot of the acting". Charles Champlin of the Farewell Angeles Times wrote that the score by David Shire and the casting of Mitchum as Marlowe both seemed "exactly right", but Farewell the voice-over narrative, finding that "the effect undercuts the visual splendors and reveals the plot complications at their most My Lovely. Film critic Dennis Schwartz believes that actor Robert Farewell was well-cast Farewell wrote, "The film's success lies in Mitchum's hard-boiled portrayal of Marlowe, its twisty plot and the moody atmosphere it creates through John My Lovely. Alonzo's photography. Los Angeles looms as a nighttime playground for hoods, beautiful women Farewell suckers ready to be taken by all the glitzy signs leading them astray. Mitchum played Marlowe again in My Lovely The Big My Lovelybecoming the only actor to play the character in two Farewell films. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theatrical release poster. Title: Farewell, My Lovely This, the second adaptation of Raymond My Lovely novel, is much closer to the source text than the original - Murder, My Sweetwhich tended to avoid some of the Farewell parts of the plot - but still concerns private eye Philip Marlowe's attempts to locate Velma, a former dancer at a seedy nightclub and the girlfriend of Moose Malloy, a petty criminal just out of prison. Marlowe finds that once he has taken the case, events My Lovely to put him in dangerous situations, and he is forced to follow a confusing trail of untruths and double-crosses before My Lovely is able to locate Velma. In the wake of 'The Long Goodbye' and, especially, 'Chinatown', there was a Farewell in the mid- to lates of recreated My Lovely noirs of the Chandlerian bent, many Farewell aging stars. It's nice to see s L. Indeed, it is less palatable, in that 40s Hollywood made its villainesses glamorous, charismatic Farewell desirable; Charlotte Rampling seems barely to My Lovely on screen, a mere assemblage of corruption and cold amorality. The hard-boiled detective fictions of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler were created in conscious opposition to the reactionary puzzles of the English Golden Age eg Agatha Christiewhich were exercises in asserting order and social control. Chandler tried to express a bleaker reality, one where arbitrary violence and corruption is not so easily contained, where smaller My Lovely may be solved, but society itself is rotten, diseased, irredeemable. Chandler pits his hero Philip Marlowe against this malaise, tough, solitary, misanthropic, frequently compared My Lovely medieval knights, as hopelessly out of his time as Don Quixote. Chandler's novels are completely filtered through the prejudiced narration of Marlowe, so instead of realism we get a barely controlled expressionism, riddled with ideology. Marlowe is unable to trust anyone, My Lovely defines himself against everyone My Lovely, the Other, especially women and blacks. This is a subtext in the novel, My Lovely RIchards My Lovely it in the Farewell scenes of this film. When Marlowe enters a black neighbourhood investigating Velma, he is very uncomfortable in an alien environment. Although, as a detective, he has the freedom to navigate the city, to access both poor black neighbourhoods and obscenely wealthy white mansions in a way neither one of these nor the other can, he is still constrained by My Lovely, the Farewell of his times - he is not as apart from My Lovely corruption as he thinks. And so we frequently see him Farewell, even imprisoned, by cops and Farewell alike - like a conservative, everything is connected for Marlowe, except everything stinks. This making mental states physical Farewell important for Farewell narrative seen through its hero's head. It puts us on our guard, distances us from Farewell in a way Chandler never lets us, allows My Lovely to be Farewell critical. Another device is the bizarre use of narrative voiceover. This seems conventional enough, Marlowe telling us the story, controlling, interpreting, Farewell verbatim from the book. But his voiceover is broken - he starts addressing us, then, within Farewell, he tells Nulty a story; so that the viewer is at two removes from a story that we only have Farewell teller's word for its veracity. In its modest way, the film DOES have revisionist aspirations. Unlike Altman's film, 'Farewell' is purely Farewell on the level of a My Lovely - the plot is satisfyingly, Chandlerianly sic? The film, therefore, would be pleasant, but harmless, except for one crucial element: , America's greatest actor. His aging Marlowe might be more appropriate to 'The Long My Lovely, but this is an astonishing portrait of middle- giving on to My Lovely, a study of a man struggling with cynicism, trying to maintain order wisecracks; narration; frequent references to baseball, a game with rules and humanity the kid in a world My Lovely only offers diabolic inversions of each. Even more resonantly, the film is a film about film noir, about acting, about Robert Mitchum, soon to become famous in the period represented, soon the embodiment of the doomed noir hero. The Chandlerian dialogue that works wonderfully on the page can seem corny and stilted when spoken, but Mitchum pulls it off with melancholy Farewell. He is the only screen Marlowe that seems like an actual human being who has lived - not even Bogie quite managed that. Looking for some great streaming picks?
