Last year, the UIC College of Pharmacy announced the establishment of the Norman R. Farnsworth Lectureship in Pharmacognosy in memory of one of its most dedicated pharmacy educators and internationally renowned, transformational pharmacognosy researchers on the chemistry, biology and therapeutic properties of medicinal plants and natural products. Norman R. Farnsworth, Distinguished University Professor, served on the UIC College of Pharmacy faculty for more than 41 years (1970‐2011). During his tenure, he served as head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology for 12 years, followed by 30 years as director of the Program for Collaborative Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (PCRPS). This multi‐disciplinary research unit has been dedicated to all aspects of collaborative studies on medicinal plants, including chemistry, biology, clinical effects, biodiversity inventory and conservation, informatics and intellectual property rights. Farnsworth also served as director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Traditional Medicine at UIC, and was the inventor and editor of the NAPRALERT database, a relational database on medicinal plants and bioactive natural products in general.

This year’s lecture features the internationally renowned bioorganic and natural products chemist, Dr. Koji Nakanishi. It is worth noting that the lecturer is also an old friend and colleague of Dr. Farnsworth. Dr. Nakanishi received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from in 1947 from Prof. Fujio Egami. Following two years of post‐graduate work with Prof. Louis Fieser at , he returned to Nagoya University where he completed his Ph.D. in 1954 with Prof. . He took a position as Assistant Professor at Nagoya, and then Professor of Chemistry at Tokyo Kyoiku University. In 1963 he moved to in and remained there until 1969 when he joined the faculty of . In 1980 he became Centennial Professor of Chemistry. He was Chairman of the Chemistry Department, 1987‐1990.

On Friday, March 21 at 3:30 pm at the UIC College of Pharmacy, Dr. Nakanishi will serve as the keynote lecture for the Norman R. Farnsworth Lectureship in Pharmacognosy. Dr. Nakanishi’s talk is entitled, Bioorganic Study on Ginkgolides. Should you wish to attend, please contact Deb Fox at [email protected].
