All other citations are identified in the 2 . CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Pale J<'ire is a novel that is put together in the reader's mind 1rom the material supplied by ~abokov . The reader is pre~ented with four com plex blocks of material - two large ones (a 999 - line poem by John Shade, and what proclaims itself to be a critical commentary on that poem by Charles Kinbote), and two lesser ones (a foreword and an index, both by Kinbote) . The four parts can be fitted together· in a number of ways, and the pattern thac emerges will depend on the way the reader chooses to relate them . -

TTh 1:30-2:45 pm, Wrigley Hall 1-08 Art in Exile: Vladímir Vladímirovich Nabókov Fall 2014 Course Description This course is offered in English. The scandalous success of Lolita (1955) allowed Vladimir Nabokov to retire from teaching at Cornell University and move to Switzerland to devote himself to fiction, translation, criticism, and lepidoptery. This was only one of the many metamorphoses that Nabokov, a Russian noble, underwent while in exile, moving from Russia to the Crimea, Cambridge UK, Berlin, Paris, Cambridge MA, Ithaca, Hollywood, and finally Montreux. This course examines the Russian roots of Nabokov’s Russian (in translation) and American novels about exile: his first novel, Mary (1926), The Defense (1929), Glory (1932), and his tribute to nineteenth-century Russian literature, The Gift (1938), which he considered his greatest Russian novel. These are followed by Lolita (1955), Pnin (1957) and Pale Fire (1962), his memoirs, Speak, Memory (1966), and some essays and short stories. Films include Lolita by Stanley Kubrick (1962) and Adrian Lyne (1997). 2 Learning Outcomes Over the course of the semester, students will: 1. Develop an appreciation for Nabokov’s life as writer, translator, and lepidopterist, the major works, and some scholarship and films about him and his works. 2. Discover and discuss Nabokov’s work as a translator and his views on translation in the context of translation theory. 3. Argue with Nabokov’s position on important literary debates in the context of Russian literary history more generally, especially Pushkin. -
The Gift: Synesthesia in Translingual Texts
L2 Journal, Volume 4 (2012), pp. 214-229 http://repositories.cdlib.org/uccllt/l2/vol4/iss2/art2/ The Gift: Synesthesia in Translingual Texts NATASHA LVOVICH Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York E-mail: [email protected] This interdisciplinary article explores the relationship between multilingualism and synesthesia (neuro- psychological blend of senses) using textual data from several translingual authors—writers who write in their non-native language (L2). I briefly summarize the existing research on synesthesia, primarily its relationship to language, cognition, and emotionality, and share my own multilingual synesthetic perceptions exemplified in my published work. I theorize that ‘translingual synesthesia’ is a complex cross-modal metaphor and a spontaneous imagistic ‘device,’ possibly enhanced by or concurrent with multilingualism, which allows writers to transcend cognitive and linguistic realms and to embody L2 with personal imagery while simultaneously creating an aesthetic effect of “de-familiarization of the word.” Applied to language learning and teaching, synesthesia lends a view into learners’ diverse subjectivities and their lingua-cultural and lingua-emotional dispositions, which can be modeled by language teachers. _______________ “A noir, E blanc, I rouge, U vert, O bleu: voyelles, Je dirai quelque jour vos naissances latentes: A, noir corset velu des mouches éclatantes Qui bombinent autour des puanteurs cruelles…” —Arthur Rimbaud, Voyelles (1973, p. 78) “HOW DID IT BEGIN WITH YOU?” In his novel, The Gift (1991), one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, the multilingual Vladmir Nabokov, describes his synesthesia in the following dialogue: How did it begin with you? - When my eyes opened to the alphabet. -

This striking symmetry begs the question of his identity: was he a Russian author who then became an American novelist or was he both, that is, a Russian-American writer? In my opinion, Nabokov’s multilingualism is his most crucial feature as code-switching is at the heart of his English style. Therefore, he can be best characterized as a cosmopolitan writer. According to sociologist Dharwadker (2011, 140), A cosmopolitan is a citizen of the world because she has the capacity to be at home in different societies; but to be so does not necessarily mean that she mixes different cultures. -

KOBALTANA: PALE FIRE’s Mystery Spot The Secret to the Treasure is the Treasure (esoteric saying) TREASURE: There is an unsolved mystery in Nabokov’s Pale Fire – the hiding place of Zembla’s crown jewels. A closed loop in the index goes from “Crown Jewels,” which takes one to “Hiding place,” which refers to “Potaynik,” which in turn refers to “Taynik, Russ., secret place; see Crown Jewels.” Nabokov, when asked by the critic Alfred Appel Jr. for the location of Pale Fire’s crown jewels, offered an equally mystifying circumlocution: “In the ruins, sir, of some old barracks near Kobaltana (q.v.); but do not tell it to the Russians.” (SO, 92) Kobaltana is indeed listed in Pale Fire’s index as “a once fashionable mountain resort near the ruins of some old barracks now a cold and desolate spot of difficult access and no importance but still remembered in military families and forest castles, not in the text.” This set-up makes clear that Nabokov wants us to play this game of hide-and-seek. One would expect that the reward of discovering the crown jewels would be more than a clever game; it should be a satisfying key to the novel. We shall see. John Shade’s poem is also circular, the unfinished last line suggesting a return to the first line. The circle returning on itself is an ancient symbol, used also in alchemy, of the snake eating its tail – the uroboros. Carl Jung saw the uroboros as a mandala, the ultimate symbol of wholeness, which he termed the true self. -
Bile/Pale Fire: Benjaminian Allegory and Nabokovian Melancholy Sigi

Why would S I we, for, if Tom Cohen is to be believed, they are destined to remain unread. I Bile/Pale Fire: S S And this is only true for the letters that are actually posted, which the & majority are not according to Darian Leader.2 Or at least those letters & written by women. Letters that are written but unposted are doubly C C R unread, off-cuts of a conversation that founders before it begins. Misfires. R I Miscarriages. Or just simply missed. Perhaps the letters that remain I Benjaminian T T I unposted are written by a melancholic hand. The melancholic misses. This I Q is what she does best. She misses the one who has inexplicably gone. Q U More precisely, she misses the time in which it is proper to miss. Missing U E E someone ultimately means accepting their absence. Accepting their Allegory and / absence implies one has sufficiently mourned. But the melancholic, as / Freud tells us, fails to mourn because mourning ultimately means turning Volume 3 / Volume 3 / Issue 2 one’s back on the loved one, making an about-face towards reality again. Issue 2 Against such a betrayal of love, the melancholic rebels. She rises up against the slow and painful process of detaching her libido from the lost Nabokovian loved object, making of herself in the process, as Freud says, “the greatest nuisance.” Melancholics, Freud writes in “Mourning and Melancholia,” always seem as though they felt slighted and had been treated with great injustice.
