1 EDUCATION New Dimensions PUBLISHERS' NOTE Swami
EDUCATION New Dimensions PUBLISHERS' NOTE Swami Vivekananda declares that education is the panacea for all our evils. According to him `man-making' or `character-building' education alone is real education. Keeping this end in view, the centres of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission have been running a number of institutions solely or partly devoted to education. The Ramakrishna Math of Bangalore (known earlier as Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama) started the `Sri Ramakrishna Vidyarthi Mandiram' in 1943, as a hostel for college boys wherein the inculcating of moral and spiritual values in the minds of the inmates was given the primary importance. The hostel became popular very soon and the former inmates who are now occupying important places in public life, still remember their life at the hostel. In 1958, the Vidyarthi Mandiram was shifted to its own newly built, spacious and well- designed, premises. In 1983, the Silver Jubilee celebrations were held in commemoration of this event. During that period a Souvenir entitled ``Education: New Dimensions'' was brought out. Very soon, the copies were exhausted. However, the demand for the same, since it contained many original and thought-provoking articles, went on increasing. We are now bringing it out as a book with some modifications. Except the one article of Albert Einstein which has been taken from an old journal, all the others are by eminent monks of the Ramakrishna Order who have contributed to the field of education, in some way or the other. We earnestly hope that all those interested in the education of our younger generation, especially those in the teaching profession, will welcome this publication and give wide publicity to the ideas contained in it. -
Reminiscences of Swami Prabuddhananda
Reminiscences of Swami Prabuddhananda India 2010 These precious memories of Swami Prabuddhanandaji are unedited. Since this collection is for private distribution, there has been no attempt to correct or standardize the grammar, punctuation, spelling or formatting. The charm is in their spontaneity and the heartfelt outpouring of appreciation and genuine love of this great soul. May they serve as an ongoing source of inspiration. BELUR MATH, DIST: FAX: 033-2654-4346 HOWRAH Email: [email protected] WEST BENGAL : 711202, INDIA Website: www.belurmath.org April 27, 2015 Dear Virajaprana, I am glad to receive your e-mail of April 24, 2015. Swami Prabuddhanandaji and myself met for the first time at the Belur Math in the year 1956 where both of us had come to receive our Brahmacharya-diksha—he from Bangalore and me from Bombay. Since then we had close connection with each other. We met again at the Belur Math in the year 1960 where we came for our Sannyasa-diksha from Most Revered Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj. I admired his balanced approach to everything that had kept the San Francisco centre vibrant. In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss. -
Vision of Freedom Om
1 Vision of Freedom Om. A-sa-to ma sad gam-ma-ya. Ta-ma-so-ma jyo-tir gam-ma-ya. Mri-tyor ma a-mri-tam ga-ma-ya. Avir avir ma e-dhi. Rudra yat te dak-shi-nam mu-kham. Tena mam pahi nityam. Tena mam pahi nityam. Tena mam pahi nityam. Lead us from the unreal to the Real. Lead us from darkness unto Light. Lead us from death to Immortality. Reveal to us Thy Resplendent Truth and evermore protect us, Oh Lord, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face. Happy Fourth of July! To the American, fourth of July carries with it lots of emotions, because on this day in 1776, America declared freedom. Since then, fourth of July has been a very sacred day, not merely to the Americans, but also to others who love freedom. Freedom is a great aspiration of human life. You could say, it begins with the baby in the womb of the mother. If you could read the baby’s mind, the baby would say, “How miserable is this existence. I want freedom. I want freedom. I want freedom.” And when the baby emerges and has a vision of the sky, has a vision of the mother, then the baby… the baby’s feeling you could imagine. As the baby grows, this idea of freedom also grows. The baby, the child, the youth, the young man, the householder, whatever situation we reach, that sense of freedom, the ideal of freedom, goes with us. -

Swami Vivekananda: the Prophet of Vedanta Om

Reveal to us Thy Resplendent Truth and evermore protect us, Oh Lord, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face, by Thy Sweet and Compassionate Face. The subject of my talk this morning is: Swami Vivekananda, the prophet of Vedanta. Swami Vivekananda was born in 1863. He came to this country when he was about thirty years old in 1893. He had a good college education, but from his early boyhood, his heart was very much inclined to spiritual pursuits. He wandered in many places, came to many teachers, scholars, but nobody could satisfy him. The deeper questions that were disturbing his mind, could not be resolved by any scholar or [by] any religious man at that time-- around Calcutta of course. Calcutta was the city where he was born. Eventually he met Sri Ramakrishna, a simple holy man without an education, but who had realized the highest spiritual truth in many ways. As you know his very well known utterance, “As many ways, so many paths.” That means all religions lead eventually to the same destiny, namely God. -

Kerala society was not based on the priciples of social freedom and equality. Kerala witnessed a cultural and ideological struggle against the hegemony of Brahmins. This struggle was due to structural changes in the society and the consequent emergence of a new class, the educated middle class .Although the upper caste -

EDITED BY THE SWAMI SARADANANDA ITBLISHKI) liV THE BRAILMACI1ARI GONENDRA NATH : UDBODHAN OFFICE : BAGHBA/AR, CALCUTTA All rights reserved Printed by K. C. Ghose at the Lakshmi Printing WorJ 64-1, 64-2, Sukea Street, Calcutta. PREFACE. In presenting this little book of the late Sister Nivedita to the public, the Editor has taken care to correct only a few minor inaccuracies as regards facts that crept into it, when it appeared as a series of articles in the Brahmavadin of Madras, The Chapter headings and a short Synopsis of the contents of each are also his chapter ; and the letter has been joined to the book, to make it con venient for the reader to find out things dealt with in it, whenever he feels so disposed. In conclusion he hopes that the book, which offers bright glimpses of the yet undiscovered nooks of the private life of the great Swami Vivekananda, and the period of training through which the much lamented Sister Nivedita had to pass in the hands bf her Master, ere she came out before the public gaze as the wonderful champion of truth and justice and righteousness and of the cause of India will meet with the warm reception at the hands of the public, that it fully deserves.
