It's only rock & roll | Pep Saña | Actualitzat el 31/08/2020 a les 17:13 Van Halen amb David Lee Roth i Sammy Hagar Van Halen amb David Lee Roth i Sammy Hagar Sembla que no pugui ser però ja han passat 48 anys de la seva fundació i 43 anys des del dia que Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen i Michael Anthony van estampar les seves signatures en un contracte amb la discogràfica Warner Bros. i van canviar per sempre el món del Hard Rock i el Heavy Metal, especialment Eddie Van Halen amb la seva guitarra. Els germans Van Halen havien nascut a Holanda al 1953 (Alex) i 1955 (Eddie), respectivament, però la família va emigrar a Califòrnia al 1962. Considerat un dels més grans debuts de la història del Rock, l'àlbum homònim de Van Halen només té per davant l'àlbum Are You Experienced? de Jimi Hendrix quant a debuts discogràfics revolucionaris i originals. El tema instrumental Eruption va introduir al món del Rock una tècnica nova pels solos de guitarra, anomenada Tapping, en la que les dues mans toquen al mastil de la guitarra. Eruption li va donar immediatament a Eddie Van Halen l' status de déu de la guitarra amb nomes 21 anys. Es deia que abans de sortir el primer àlbum, Eddie tocava els seus solos d'esquena al públic per amagar la seva tècnica als imitadors. Van Halen - Van Halen (1978) Si ens imaginem que estem al 1978 i que ens agrada la música, amb tota probabilitat aquest seria el disc que més ens hagués sorprès, com va ser el meu cas. Una edició francesa en vinil que crec recordar vaig comprar a Andorra. L'àlbum Van Halen obre amb la cançó que seria el seu primer single, Runnin' With The Devil. La guitarra és la gran diferència sense cap dubte i des d'aquí es comença a generar la marca personal de Van Halen. El segon tema de l'àlbum, Eruption, és una peça instrumental en la que Eddie Van Halen fa gala de tot el seu virtuosisme amb la guitarra. No estava previst gravar aquesta joia a l'àlbum, era una cosa que Eddie acostumava fer per escalfar, però el productor Ted Templeman quan la va sentir li va demanar gravar-la i ficar-la a l'àlbum, convencent a Eddie Van Halen per gravar dues tomes del Eruption. La que apareix a l'àlbum és considerada per molts el millor solo de guitarra, a més de ser un dels més difícils de tocar. Aquest cover de Van Halen és potentíssim, a més de la carismàtica força que li posa David Lee Roth quan la canta i la seva posada en escena a cada concert. Apostar per un cover en el primer àlbum va ser una bona idea, era una manera d'assegurar-se l'èxit a les ràdios, però la veritat és que no els hi va fer falta, sense aquesta fórmula van aconseguir l'èxit. Ain't Talkin' ?Bout Love, és un altre temasso de l'àlbum, senzilla, contagiosa i amb un gran riff de guitarra en el que Eddie demostra que pot fer coses diferents, deixant la seva marca personal. Una altra de les bombes és el tercer single de Van Halen, Jamie's Cryin, tot i que és un dels temes més estimats de Van Halen, no va entrar a les llistes d'èxit quan és va publicar al maig de 1978, però arribaria a una audiència massiva una dècada després, quan el raper Tone Loc la va samplejar en el seu hit, Wild Thing del 1989. His father had a dance band that travelled the ballroom circuit in the late 40's and 50's, where his mother was the featured vocalist. When Berry was born his father opened a music store. Before launching December People, Robert played with Sammy Hagar and toured with Ambrosia. When not touring with December People Robert is the bass player with the Greg Kihn Band. Gary Pihl: Raised in the suburbs of Chicago for the first 12 years of his life, Gary Pihl relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. Gary had his recording debut at age 19 with Day Blindness. He says, “After my time in Day Blindness, I was in a band called Fox with Roy Garcia and Johnny V (Vernazza), who went on to play in Elvin Bishop’s band.

    COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D.     Page 4, SIDELINES, Wednesday, June 8, 1988 Jlii v.«S;;;:i¥i¥' & :>>*:■• 3S Newest Halen musically tasty By DAVE CHANDLER Entertainment Writer Well kids, it's finally here, the long-awaited new album by Van Hagar, Van Hefflen, I mean Van Halen. What a catchy little tide it has, OU812, pretty clever huh? OU812 is the eigth Van Halen album or second one A.D. (after Dave). The bottom line to this album is thet it rocks. What is so great about OU812 is that it is not packed with the commercialism found in most of today's hard rock i albums. Now don't get me wrong, because it does include songs that will obviously be major hits. One track in particular, "When It's Love," is destined to be a Top 10 mainstay, but none of that Van Halen style was lost while producing the song. And if you're looking for the 90 m.p.h. speedbumers that the grovp is famous for, you'll also find them here. Two such songs are "Source of Infection" and "Sucker In A 3 Piece." These are sure to get your feet a tappin' or your head a bangin', whatever your preference may be. As usual there are the incredible guitar heroics of Eddie Van Halen and the band's great harmonies in the backup vocals. These are epitomized in the first single from the Wayne Cartwright+Staff album, "Black and Blue," which, incidentally, gets my vote Pleasing the crowd at Fan Fair... for the dirtiest song on the airwaves at the present time.

    Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth A Different Kind Of Truth is Van Halen’s twelfth studio album, and their first in fourteen years. This album marks the recording reunion of Eddie and Alex Van Halen with original singer/front man David Lee Roth. Roth was the singer in Van Halen from 1974‐1985, and was replaced by Sammy Hagar when the band softened their hard rock sound into a more commercial pop rock sound in the mid‐1980s. Roth recorded two songs with Van Halen in 1996 for a greatest hits album released when Hagar left the band, and expectations were high that he would return for a new album, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen, and they recorded one weak album together. Touring reunions with both Hagar and Roth followed the departure of Cherone in 1999, but there was no new music recorded. There was much debate whether there would ever be another Van Halen album, as Eddie Van Halen was often seen drunk in public during his separation and after his divorce from actress Valerie Bertinelli. Furthermore, a YouTube video surfaced of Eddie, appearing to be near death, sitting in with a party band playing a Tommy Bolin song, and his guitar playing was pathetic. Eddie appeared unhealthy due to suspected drug use, and the second half of a tour was cancelled in 2008 due to Eddie’s poor health. This is the much abbreviated “CliffsNotes” version of the Van Halen soap opera, which effectively reduced one of the most popular rock bands in history to a joke.
