If you have a current resume, please attach it to this application) Upon transferring to USC in Fall 2019, I started at the Daily Trojan as the opinion editor. In Spring 2020, I was selected as the managing editor, a position I served in until the middle of this fall. Now, I serve as the editor-in-chief. I succeeded the former editor after she decided to step down. Before transferring to USC, I worked for my community college’s paper, where I served as a copy editor and news editor. This summer, I was selected as a Summer Intern for CBS News. As a remote intern, I attended workshops and panel discussions from the network’s veteran reporters, anchors and producers. And this fall, I was invited back as an intern for CBS News’ live-streaming platform CBSN where I work with the booking team to research and book guests for its midday news program and political show “Red & Blue.” Earlier this year, I worked at the Los Angeles Times as a part-time designer, a position I will come back to at the end of October and continue through mid-spring. What is your career objective and in what ways would the Daily Trojan Newspaper editorship contribute to it? I have no set idea of where I hope to be professionally upon graduating, but I’d definitely like to work in the journalism industry. Right now, I’m interested in working toward becoming a producer for a broadcast news organization. Still, many leadership skills are transferable between print and broadcast. One thing I care a lot about is ensuring a productive, welcoming work environment, which has been difficult to navigate since the transition to remote production. Communication, teamwork and trust are all what makes the Daily Trojan function effectively, and through this editorship, I hope to continue strengthening these abilities as these are all important upon entering the journalism industry. Please state briefly what changes and improvements you would like to see made this coming Spring! Community Building a sense of community among the Daily Trojan staff has always been difficult, even before remote production. Working with our wellness & outreach team, I will help to continue making weekly opportunities for editors to come together removed from their editor responsibilities to bond and unwind at the end of each week. This can be done through guided yoga and meditation, Netflix parties and game nights among other ideas the Wellness team has already implemented. I also hope to work with our wellness & outreach team to organize a monthly speakers series where industry professionals can come to speak with the entire DT staff about their careers and tips for students entering their professions. Additionally, I want to make sure section editors hold regular meetings with their staffs to develop relationships among the staff that go beyond Slack messages, emails and Google Doc Raymond Rapada suggestions. I also want to make sure editors meet with writers when there are big edits to a story that need to be addressed — building stronger staff communication will help build accountability and stronger writing and editing skills across DT. Diversity & Inclusion I am passionate about furthering our D&I initiatives that have been set in motion this semester, which is to say I want to diversify the DT masthead to include more people of color in leadership roles — especially the managing team — as well as hire people of color in assistant roles to position them for future leadership opportunities within DT. Also, I would like to continue meeting with leaders from the various cultural organizations and other student-run clubs in hopes to mend and build up the relationships between DT and these student communities at USC. I also want to make sure our D&I and wellness & outreach directors work together make it known to these communities that there is a space for them at DT to share their stories and that their stories are valued. I also hope to work with the Spring 2021 managing team, D&I and wellness & outreach directors to use the findings of this semester’s staff diversity and coverage reports to best address the disparities in staff, source and coverage diversity to make sure our better reflects the diversity of the USC and South Central communities. In addition, by starting the recruitment process once the managing team and masthead is set and by also collecting and organizing staff demographics sooner, our D&I team will be better equipped to make the semesterly diversity staff report without scrambling last minute and ensure 100% of the staff is accounted for in the report. Lastly, I hope to work with our D&I team to ensure we have monthly D&I workshops for the entire staff so that our staff as a whole can address any implicit biases to veer from harmful and reductive reporting and writing. Winter break before the spring semester Over the winter break, I would like to work with our social media and wellness & outreach directors to roll out a robust social media hiring campaign. This will include Instagram takeovers and live Q&As led by editors, publicizing Zoom information sessions for prospective staffers and doing call outs on the Daily Trojan social media accounts for directed recruitment for specific sections and positions within the staff. Another thing I would like to do during the break is train our incoming editors on the masthead, especially if there will be members of the masthead who will be working for DT for the first time in the spring. There is a lot of work that goes into being a senior editor of DT, so I want to make sure these leaders have as best of an understanding of their jobs and duties and to make sure they are getting the necessary support so the transition to being a section editor goes as smoothly as possible. Training will include Wordpress posting, SEO social media caption writing, InDesign workshops, staff organization, etc. During this time, I also hope to work with all editors to plan out training and on-boarding all staff members of the spring. Raymond Rapada Additionally, I hope to have the staff orientation sooner at the beginning of the semester in order to begin staff training early. Making sure staffers know the basic expectations, such as interview etiquette, draft and audio submissions, addressing editor suggestions and comments to name a few, from the get go will help make sure the editing workflow sees few bumps. And by having regular staff meetings, any grievances and/or comments could be addressed in a timely manner. Same goes for editors. I think it would be beneficial to continue holding all-editors meetings on Sunday for the purpose of looking back at the past week in terms of what went well and what didn’t as we look ahead toward the rest of the upcoming week.
