This specimen's length is 77mm and its wingspan is mm. Megarhyssa macrurus , a parasitoid. The body of a female is 50mm long, with a c. Tarantula hawk wasp dragging an orange-kneed tarantula to her burrow; it has the most painful sting of any wasp. Of the dozens of extant wasp families, only the family Vespidae contains social species, primarily in the subfamilies Vespinae and Polistinae. All species of social wasps construct their nests using some form of plant fiber mostly wood pulp as the primary material, though this can be supplemented with mud, plant secretions e. Wood fibres are gathered from weathered wood, softened by chewing and mixing with saliva. The placement of nests varies from group to group; yellow jackets such as Dolichovespula media and D. Other wasps, like Agelaia multipicta and Vespula germanica , like to nest in cavities that include holes in the ground, spaces under homes, wall cavities or in lofts. While most species of wasps have nests with multiple combs, some species, such as Apoica flavissima , only have one comb. The vast majority of wasp species are solitary insects. There are some species of solitary wasp that build communal nests, each insect having its own cell and providing food for its own offspring, but these wasps do not adopt the division of labour and the complex behavioural patterns adopted by eusocial species. -

The origin of the blue-green iridescence is studied in detail, using reflection spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and physical modeling. It is shown that the structure responsible for the iridescence is a single homogeneous transparent chitin layer covering the whole surface of each wing. The opacity is essentially due to the presence of melanin in the stratified medium which forms the mechanical core of the wing. We had seen an overall total of 763 identified species (the second highest ever for this tour) including 346 higher plants and 265 invertebrate species, of which 89 were butterflies and 31 moths, as well as 23 dragonflies, 23 bugs, 28 beetles etc. It is always difficult to find birds on this tour, being rather late in the season. The extremely high temperatures throughout the week also did not help as birds sort cover, but we nonetheless managed a creditable total of 95 species, including some not often seen on this tour; the tour average over eight years exactly 100 species. Day 1 Tuesday 31st July Fly Heathrow to Sofia then drive to Melnik via stop at Verdena River Sunny on arrival in Sofia, hot, with maximum temp. 28°C As so often on this route, our flight was a few minutes late at take off from Heathrow but we made up time, landing twenty-three minutes ahead of schedule. Having cleared immigration and collected all our baggage, we found Mario, our Bulgarian guide, together with Peter and Susan who had travelled out separately. -

В.Г.Клетьонкін 69 V.G.Kletenkin УДК: 595.7 Оси родини Scoliidae (Hymenoptera, Aculeata) НПП «Дворічанський» В.Г.Клетьонкін Під час вивчення біологічного різноманіття будь-якого регіону і, зокрема, території національного природного парку як природоохоронного об’єкту, перш за все необхідне проведення інвентаризації окремих компонентів фауни, а також підготовка та видання узагальнюючих зведень. Одним із важливих компонентів ентомофауни будь-якого біотопу чи географічного регіону є жалоносні перетинчастокрилі (Aculeata). Під час проектування та створення національного природного парку «Дворічанський» ця систематична група взагалі не була досліджена. Систематичні дослідження Aculeata були розпочаті нами у 2015 р. Для проведення досліджень використовувались традиційні ентомологічні методи індивідуального відлову та пастки Меріке. Дослідження проводились на піщаних пустищах з розрідженою рослинністю, узліссях соснового та листяного лісів борової тераси р. Оскіл, степових ділянках крейдових схилів, у населених пунктах. Метою дослідження була інвентаризація видів комах родини Scoliidae на вказаній території. Загалом для України відомо 10 видів сколій, а для материкової частини – дев’ять. Dr. Argaman began his career in Hungary, publishing under the name Carol Nagy. He later moved to Romania and finally moved to Israel, where he assumed the name Qabir Argaman. In total, he published 84 articles on the order Hymenoptera and described 348 new taxa (2 families, 11 subfamilies, 58 tribes, 153 genera or subgenera, and 125 species or subspecies) in 15 families, as well as 1 new species of Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera). -

National Museum of Natural History Washington DC 20560 Notes from the Editor This issue of Sphecos is coming to you later than planned. Your editor has been inundated with administrative matters and time has simply slipped by. Highlights of this issue involve news about people, some scientific notes, a few obituaries, some trip reports and of course the usual recent literature coverage which includes another of Robin Edwards 1 special vespoid sections. I want to take this opportunity to thank Helen Proctor for typing most of this newsletter for me. Thanks also go to LUdnri:l"a Kassianoff for translating some Russian titles into English, and to Yiau Min Huang for translating some Chinese titles into English. Judging by the comments received, the readership of Sphecos 4 enjoyed Eric Grissell's "profile" (p. 9) more than anything else in the issue. Congratulations Eric! Sphecos is gaining considerable recogn1t1on via reviews in journals. The most recent and most extensive being published in "Soviet Bibliography" for 1980, issue #6. The nearly 2 page lauditory review by I. Evgen'ev concludes with the statement "Sphecos [is] a highly useful publication for people around the world who study wasp biology and systematics" [Woj Pulawski generously translated the entire review for me into English]. Currently Sphecos is mailed to about 350 waspologists around the world. This figure includes a few libraries such as those at the BMNH, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad, the Albany Museum, Grahamstown, and the Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging, Amsterdam to list a sample.
