Best Friends: Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My! n unusual trio consisting of a bear, lion, and tiger has formed at an A 1. animal sanctuary in Georgia. The animals, typically rivals in nature, have created an unbreakable friendship that is simply unbelievable to see. They adore one another, nuzzle each other affectionately, and feel quite upset if 1. they are apart. It is one of the most amazing things you will ever see. They even have a Facebook page that states they “can’t get enough of each other.” The friendship began fourteen years ago in 2001 when “Baloo” the bear, “Leo” the lion, and “Shere Khan” the tiger were found by animal protection services in the basement of a drug dealer’s house in Atlanta. The1. tiny animals were in awful condition. They had obviously been neglected and abused. In this sad state, they had shared a special connection based on their desire to survive and love for each other. It was in these early stages of life that the animals formed a bond that can only be described as “family.” They were immediately brought to Noah’s Ark, a non-profit animal sanctuary for abused animals in Locust Grove. Initially, they were separated but the animals became agitated. When they were reunited in the1. same enclosure they hugged, nuzzled, and stayed close. Animal experts explain that this close bond between three very different predators might not be possible if they weren’t from different geographical regions. Baloo is native to North America, Leo to Africa, and Shere Khan to Asia. Even if they were all from the same continent, one has to wonder if these three would let anybody or anything separate them? When Baloo had surgery, and was missing from the enclosure for a few days, Leo and Shere Khan seemed depressed. These three do everything together. They eat together, they sleep together, and according to representatives at Noah’s Ark, they even hunt cardboard giraffes together. Even for non-animal enthusiasts, it is eye catching to watch these three very different species groom each other. They will rub their heads together and lick each other just as a mother would. Experts say that their terrifying early months together have allowed these different species to perform behaviors that most animal scientists would deem “unnatural.” And so goes another animal story that To watch the video challenges our beliefs and knowledge about the remarkable creatures that http://www.wimp.com/livetogether/ inhabit our planet. 1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both.

Redstone Theater reopens on Friday, April 30, with a 70mm presentation of Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. Following this grand return, the Museum will present a program of classic big-screen films as part of the signature series See It Big, appropriately subtitled “The Return!,” co-presented with the Museum’s magazine of film and media criticism Reverse Shot, and the retrospective Complete Kubrick. The schedule also includes family-friendly matinees and programs presented as part of the ongoing series Jim Henson’s World, which accompanies the Museum’s popular Jim Henson Exhibition. “After more than 13 months of exile, we’re grateful and excited to be back in the Redstone Theater to project and watch films again,” said Eric Hynes, Curator of Film. “While private viewings and small screens have gotten us through this dark year, nothing beats gathering to view movies on the big screen, and few screens are as glorious as the Redstone’s. With that in mind, our ongoing See It Big series feels even more essential, as does prioritizing 35mm, 16mm, and 70mm whenever possible.
