ABSTRACT This study examines Tertullian’s references to the New Testament outside the Gospels, in order to determine whether he was citing from a Greek or Latin copy of these writings. A new collection of these references was undertaken and is explained in the Appendix. The conclusion of the analysis is that Tertullian was quoting the New Testament writings using Greek exemplars and translating anew in most instances. Tertullian was one of the first Christians to have undertaken such translation work. It is proposed that Tertullian was participating in and influenced by a broad cultural-linguistic movement called the Second Sophistic. Latin writers like Cicero, Quintilian, Varro, and Apuleius were also participants, and their translation of Greek works into Latin likely formed Tertullian to become a literary translator. -

ABSTRACT This thesis embarks upon a thorough investigation into the relationship between genre and interpretation, using the principle of narrative coherence to provide a methodological basis upon which to build. It argues that the attempt to find a single or even simple hybrid genre for Acts is an academic cul-de-sac that is curtailing effective progress, and advocates instead a model of fluid intertextuality that sees the author make use of many different genres. It then goes on to explore these findings in three separate studies, all of which make use of different intertextual and generic frameworks to interpret the text in new ways. The first study makes use of a device seen in Epic and Tragedy, the second makes use of wider systems of characterisation, particularly of divinely elected heroes, and the third looks at the use of comedy in sections of the narrative. -

Rethinking the Western Non-interpolations: A Case For Luke Re-editing His Gospel by Giuseppe Capuana BA (Mus), GradDipEd, BTheol (Hons) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy University of Divinity 2018 Abstract This thesis presents a new paradigm for understanding the Western non-interpolations. It argues that when Luke originally wrote his Gospel it did not contain 22:19b–20; 24:3b, 6a, 12, 36b, 40, 51b and 52a. However, at a later time, around the time Luke wrote Acts, he returned to his Gospel creating a second edition which contained these readings. My thesis makes the case that the paradigm of scribal interpolation is problematic. Working under this paradigm the results of external and internal evidence appear conflicting and scholars are generally forced to give greater preference to one set of evidence over the other. However, a balanced weighting of the external and internal evidence points us towards the notion that Luke was responsible for both the absence and the inclusion of 22:19b–20; 24:3b, 6a, 12, 36b, 40, 51b and 52a. Chapter one introduces the Western non-interpolations. It also makes the case that the quest for the original text of Luke’s Gospel should not be abandoned. Chapter two is on the history, theory and methodology of the Western non-interpolations. It begins with an overview of the text-critical scholarship emerging during the nineteenth century, particularly the influence of Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort. It also covers the period after Westcott and Hort to the present. -

ABSTRACT Principles of Doctrinal Continuity and Change in Maximus the Confessor (580-662) Yelena V. Borisova, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. Maximus the Confessor portrays the cosmos as Christologically "prewired" for a dynamic doctrinal transmission. Ontologically, reality is coherent as created by, centered on, and interpretable through the Logos. The perichoretic human-divine duality of Christ's natures—united without confusion and distinct without separation—serves as the hermeneutical model for other non-oppositional relations of contraries, such as the human and the divine. The principle of diabasis (transit) and the kenosis/theosis model place these contraries in a relation of dynamic continuity. Historically, the perichoretic paradigm is realized through the Church, the unique theandric entity characterized by the unconfused unity of the divine and the human qualities. The essential immutable unity of the Logos behind the Church’s teaching balances this teaching's formal mutability and secures the continuity of its multiple expressions. Accordingly, the immutable archetype is reflected in the mutable and, therefore, developmental aspects of his image. Doctrinal continuity is preserved by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who equips humans to preserve, research, and transmit the contents of the Church's Tradition. Maximus demonstrates reverence to Tradition not by slavishly repeating the received content, but by assuming the inner unity and binding authority of Tradition as a whole and of its vehicles (such as Scripture and the voice of the Fathers). Maximus treats the monadic Christological formulations of Cyril of Alexandria as part of a harmonious and authoritative whole, and his assumptions allow him to take Cyril's teaching past the originally received.
