NEW YORK, JANUARY, 1888. No. .1. NOTES ON THE ARMS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. By the Rev. Beverley R. Betts. A carefully written account of the arms of the State of New York, and of the unfortunate manner in which they have been tampered with and tinkered, was given in the Record for October, 1885. An attempt to controvert this was made by Mr. Homes,* the State Librarian, and the real parent of the abortion which has been substituted for the true arms, respecting which it is only necessary to say that it was for the most part its refutation with it for its irrelevant ; and in point of fact it carries ; writer acknowledges, in the most charmingly ingenuous manner, that "the new commission was informed up to the last moment of all the ob- jections made by the author of the October article." Of course people will be disposed to say, if this were so, if the commissioners really had the benefit of the advice of a competent person, why upon earth did they not act upon it instead of following their own crude and uninstructed fancies ? It may be as well, however, to complete and illustrate the former paper by adding certain notes which will go a little more into detail. It can do no harm to let the people of the State of New York know the mischief that has been done and the loss that they have sustained in being deprived of their hereditary insignia. There are in existence two early paintings of the armorial insignia of the State of New York, which are complete, with arms, crest, supporters and motto, and which give the tinctures. The first is the now celebrated earliest device painting in St. Paul's Chapel, New York, which gives the ; "Per iess. the sky and the sea, the sun rising, all proper." All other drawings give mountains in fess. It is not known when this picture was painted, nor is it known how or why the mountains were added. They were certainly in the arms early in 1778. The second painting is the flag of the Third New York Regiment, commonly called Mrs. Lansing's flag, which was made between 1778 and 1781. A complete and careful blazon of the arms in St. Paul's Chapel was given in the Record, Vol. III., p. 119. The following is the blazon of those in Mrs. Lansing's flag. It * Since this paper was put in type, we have heard with regret of the death of our esteemed and worthy friend, Mr. Homes. —Ed. 2 Notes on the Arms of the State of New Fork. [Jan., was made from the copy of that flag made by Miss Annie Wrightson, which, by the courtesy of Mr. Homes, was given to Columbia College, and which is now in its library. " Per fess the sky in chief and the sea in ; all three mountains in fess, the middle one base ; the sun rising over throughout, all proper. Crest on a wreath argent and azure : On a demi-monde argent, the meridians sable, an eagle rising proper. Sup- porters : Dexter, Liberty, a female figure proper, vested or ; a mantle gules depending behind her secured by a ribbon passing over her breast to her dexter armpit azure, sandalled of the third, holding in her dexter hand her staff leaning against her shoulder and rising above it sable, ensigned with a liberty cap gold ; her sinister foot resting on a royal crown over- turned of die last decorated with pearls proper and turned-up crimson. Sinister, a female figure of Justice proper, bound about the eyes argent, vested or, mantled as Liberty gules, with a like ribbon azure, sandalled of the fourth, in her dexter hand her drawn sword erect, resting against her shoulder proper, in her sinister hand, the arm embowed outward, her scales, the beam sable, the strings and scales gold. Motto. On a scroll argent the word 'Excelsior' sable." That this is a complete and perfect painting of the true arms is clear, not only from the internal evidence furnished by its heraldic accuracy, but from the fact that all engravings, coins and seals made between 1778 and 1SS1 agree with it. There may be in some of them trifling variations in the drawing of the crest and sup- porters and in the number of the mountains, but there is nothing which the merest tyro cannot correct. The oldest known engraving of the arms of New York is the Mischianza ticket, dated May 18, 1778. This contains the sky, the sea, the sun and the mountains. The existence of this was not known to the commission- ers nor to Mr. Homes. If it had been it would have upset their argu- ment, for it is a month older than their imaginary "earliest specimen." One of these tickets is in the possession of Mr. de Lancey. The second engraving in point of age was made in the year 17S7. In the Columbian Magazine for that year, vol. I., p. 715, a copy of which is in the Library of the New York Historical Society, are an engraving and an incomplete and indeed inaccurate blazon of the " Armoiial Bearings of the State of New York." The blazon is as follows : "Argent a sun rising on a hilly countiy proper. Crest, an eagle soaring from a globe proper. Supported on the dexter side by liberty and on the sinister by Justice. Motto. Excelsior." The shield contains the sky, the sea, the sun and five mount- ains, two next to the field and three in fess throughout. The drawing and engraving are well and boldly done.

    New York Painting Begins: Eighteenth-Century Portraits at the New-York Historical Society The New-York Historical Society holds one of the nation’s premiere collections of eighteenth-century American portraits. During this formative century a small group of native-born painters and European émigrés created images that represent a broad swath of elite colonial New York society -- landowners and tradesmen, and later Revolutionaries and Loyalists -- while reflecting the area’s Dutch roots and its strong ties with England. In the past these paintings were valued for their insights into the lives of the sitters, and they include distinguished New Yorkers who played leading roles in its history. However, the focus here is placed on the paintings themselves and their own histories as domestic objects, often passed through generations of family members. They are encoded with social signals, conveyed through dress, pose, and background devices. Eighteenth-century viewers would have easily understood their meanings, but they are often unfamiliar to twenty-first century eyes. These works raise many questions, and given the sparse documentation from the period, not all of them can be definitively answered: why were these paintings made, and who were the artists who made them? How did they learn their craft? How were the paintings displayed? How has their appearance changed over time, and why? And how did they make their way to the Historical Society? The state of knowledge about these paintings has evolved over time, and continues to do so as new discoveries are made. This exhibition does not provide final answers, but presents what is currently known, and invites the viewer to share the sense of mystery and discovery that accompanies the study of these fascinating works.

FOREWORD The Bicentennial Project rirled "Portraits of Dutchess 1680-1807" began as a simple, personal arrempr ro catalog existing porrrairs of people whose lives were part of rhe county's history in rhe Colonial Period. As rhe work progressed ir became certain rhar relatively few were srill in the Durchess-Purnam area. As so many of rhem had become the property of Museums in other localities it seemed more important than ever ro lisr rhem and their present locations. When rhe Dutchess County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission with great generosity undertook rhe funding ir was possible ro illustrate rhe booklet with photographs from rhe many available sources. This document is nor ro be considered as a geneological or historic record even though much research in rhose directions became a necessity. The collection is meant ro be a pictorial record, only, hoping rhar irs readers may be made more aware rhar these paintings are indeed pictures of our ancestors. Ir is also hoped rhar all museum collections of Colonial Painting will be viewed wirh deeper and more personal interest.     Crossing the Lines: African-Americans in the New York City Region during the British Occupation, 1776-1783 Judith Van Buskirk State University of New York at Cortland Evert Byvanck waited until he could actually hear the Battle of New York before vacating his country house in August 1776. He had taken the precaution of moving out of his city residence before the cannon thundered from across the East River. Now, on August 31, Byvanck realized that his person and possessions would not even be safe at his Corlear's Hook country estate. Consequently his slaves, Sam, Cato, and Prince, loaded up Byvanck's skiff with two chests of clothes, one box of earthenware, one box of periwigs, and a bundle of clothes for themselves. They sailed up the river to Harlem where the three slaves hauled the boatload of articles to a gentleman's house near the slip. Next morning, Byvanck dispatched Sam and Cato to help Byvanck's son move his household to the new family refuge at Horseneck, Connecticut. The elder Byvanck instructed his remaining slave, Prince, to load a cart with his master's small trunk, the master's son's books, and a treasured spy glass, after which master and slave proceeded to Horseneck. Once they had arrived in Connecticut, Byvanck sent Cato with a bundle of clothes to his wife and child at Alexander Forbush's house in Hackensack, New Jersey, where Cato was to work for his victuals until Byvanck needed him. With Cato gone, and Prince busy setting up the new household, Byvanck had to hire a Negro man named Jack to accompany Sam and his eldest son to Manhattan,where they were to retrieve chests of clothes, two feather beds, furniture, linens, guns, powderhorns, saddles, bridles, and Byvanck's sword.
