This chart is by no means complete. It also isn’t meant in any way to be a list of recommended teachers and/or lineages of Hatha Yoga. We’ve tried to offer a good sense for the major traditions of Yoga, especially those that have either specialized in or led to the development of a unique form of Hatha Yoga. Also, for the most part, we have chosen not to include contemporary teachers of a particular lineage, if they are teaching an already-established style of Yoga. So, for example, Andre Von Lysebeth is listed as the only successor of Pattabhi Jois, because of the major and original contributions he brought to 20th century Hatha Yoga – but the tree does not include the many contemporary Ashtanga Vinyasa and Iyengar Yoga teachers out there today (but we are happy that you’re out there, and we thank you for your gift of Yoga!) Having said all that, if you would like to see a lineage of Hatha Yoga listed here that is currently missing from the chart, send us an email with all the relevant history, bios, links, and, if possible, photos, and we’ll see what we can do to include it. Thanks! © Big Book of Yoga 2010.

A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

Yoga Comes to American Physical Education: Josephine Rathbone and Corrective Physical Education P a t r ic ia V e r t in s k y 1 School of Kinesiology University o f British Columbia Around the turn-of-the-twentieth-century yoga took on an American mantle, developing into India’s first “global brand" of physical culture. Physical educa tors became implicated in this transnational exchange adopting aspects of yoga into their programs and activities, though there has been an insufficient attempt to piece together the sum and pattern of their intersecting influences. This paper explores how adopted Eastern cultural practices such as yoga gained traction on American shores and entered the fabric of everyday and institutional life, in cluding the curricula of higher education in the late nineteenth and early de cades of the twentieth century. It then describes how American physical educa tor Josephine L Rathbone came to draw inspiration and knowledge from Indian gurus about the yoga postures she would incorporate in the first and rather significant program o f corrective physical education at Teachers College, Colum bia University during the 1930s and 1940s. As an early pioneer of the evolu tion o f Ling's medical gymnastics into a therapeutic stream o f physical activity which formed an important branch o f physical education, Rathbone was in strumental in maintaining a critical link with physical therapy and medicine, 'Correspondence to [email protected]. facilitating transnational connections and networks while pushing open a ¿loor to mind-body practices from the east. Her project was a small but illuminating aspect o f the shifting spaces o f "bodies in contact” in cross-cultural encounters and complex imperial networks emerging from "modernities" in both East and West.

Intro to the project Krishnamacharya wrote his book Yoga Makaranda in 1934 in the Kannada language, the Tamil edition was published in 1938. Krishnamacharya's Yogasanagalu was first published in the Kannada language in 1941, the 3rd edition was published in 1972 K. Pattabhi Jois wrote his book, Yoga Mālā, in Kannada in 1958, and it was published in 1962, but was not published in English until 1999 Yogasanagalu along with Krishnamacharya's other book Yoga Makaranda (downloadable HERE), was originally written in Mysore while Krishnamacharya was teaching at the Mysore Palace and while Sri K Pattabhi Jois was his student. YOGASANAGALU T. KRISHNAMACHARYA Introduction I did not attempt a detailed review of all ancient yoga treatises since it will make this book very long and perhaps cause boredom to the readers. Please forgive. This writing is mainly based on the following texts: Patanjalayogasutra Hathayogapradipika Rajayogaratnakara Yogakuranti Upanishads related to yoga Learning’s from my Guru and self-experience About the Second Edition This is the second edition. Added additional text to one section. I trust that by reading this, readers and practitioners will be able to overcome their doubts. With a strong conviction, I suggest and request that teachers will be able to teach the essence of yoga to their students.

BEYOND ASANA - VINYASA KRAMA Manish Pole Founder: [email protected] www.21stCentury.yoga TABLE OF CONTENTS LEARNING OBJECTIVE 3 CONTENT 4 HISTORY 5 ASSIGNMENT 6 SWADHYAY (SELF STUDY) 6 DISCLAIMER 6 Confidential (Only for Members) | 21stCentury.yoga LEARNING OBJECTIVE How movement is become such as important and integral part of yoga practice. When we think of yoga, thinking of those people sitting still for long time yet about 80% of modern yoga classes are vinyasa, they are fluid. Confidential (Only for Members) | 21stCentury.yoga CONTENT Vinyasa Krama means a step by step progression into something, or to a certain goal. vinyasa is a great exploration of meditation in movement, eventually coming to stillness this is the goal. In Sanskrit, vi, meaning “order,” nyasa, meaning “placement," and karma, meaning “succession.” The name for this type of yoga practice is often shortened to vinyasa. Vinyasa refers to practicing a sequence of asanas that are synchronized with the breath. Each movement in the vinyasa krama sequence is linked to an inhalation or an exhalation and each asana becomes a step within the flow. The yogi learns to listen to body and when it is ready to advance to a more challenging asana. Rather than performing each asana as an independent pose disconnected from the whole, vinyasa krama mimics the flowing energy of the universe. The mind, body and breath are unified into a state of harmony. Vinyasa krama also uses variations of each asana to open the potential of the mind and body.
