1 PrESS rELEASE THE 18TH AUX SOUrCES DU DESIGN FUrNITUrE MASTErPIECES FrOM 1650 TO 1790 28 OCTOBEr 2014 – 22 FEBrUArY 2015, SALLE D’AFrIqUE AND SALLE DE CrIMÉE THE PALACE OF VErSAILLES IS PrOUD TO PrESENT ITS EXHIBITION OF FUrNITUrE MASTErPIECES FrOM 1650 TO 1789, with representative examples of the rich creativity of the period. Th e exhibition off ers a glimpse of the ingenuity of a bygone era viewed through the lens of the present day and showcases the innovative and avant-garde nature of the shapes, tech niques, ornamentation and materials used in 18th century furniture. Th is is the fi rst exhibition of its kind since 1955. The exhibition includes a hundred or so works owned by some of the wealthiest art-lovers of the time, including the royal family and its entourage, arist ocrats and fi nanciers, and illust rates the revolution in furniture-making that took place in the 18th century. Works from all the great mast ers will be on disp lay, including those by André-Charles Boulle, Antoine-Robert Gaudreaus, Charles Cressent, Bernard van Risenburgh II, Jean-François Œben, Jean-Henri Riesener and Georges Jacob. Alongside major works from collections at the Palace of Versailles, the Exhibition curators Musée du Louvre, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Château de Fontainebleau and the Getty Daniel Alcouff e Museum, previously-unknown works from private collect ions will be shown to the public for the Honorary curator fi rst time. TABLE DE TOILETTE OR “COIFFEUSE” DAVID ROENTGEN (HERRENHAG I.D. WETTERAU 11.8.1743 - WIESBADEN 12.2.1807) Circa: 1770/1775 Roentgen manufactory, Neuwied, 1770/75 Stained maple (“bois de tabac”) and other light veneer woods, rosewood, carcase in oak and pine, cedar, cherry, brass, iron, ormolu mounts, silver H. 77 cm, W. 91 cm, D. 63.5 cm A “Coiffeuse” from Roentgen: The Epitome of Luxury Production Christine Cornet The piece of furniture known as a table de toilette or “coiffeuse” came into being around the middle of the eighteenth century and was used for the seconde toilette, the purpose of which was the care and beautification of body and face after the première toilette, the purpose of which was simply washing. The word toilette derives from the little “toile” or cloth that was customarily laid on the table, providing a surface on which the necessary utensils could be laid out and waste powder and hair could be allowed to fall. After use it was shaken out and cleared away. In addition to the tables laid out with cloths, there soon also developed multi-purpose tables such as this one, which were usually embellished with fine veneers. The present table de toilette is extensively veneered with maple that was once stained grey. This shade is now known as “bois de tabac,” in an allusion to the cool light brown to which the grey turns with age. The top, front, and sides of the table are decorated with floral marquetry executed in blue monochrome. The present table de toilette displays the arrangement of table top and inner compartments typical of pieces of its kind. -

Depuis 2010, les BücherboXX se développent à Berlin. Ce sont des anciennes cabines téléphoniques recyclées en bibliothèques de rue où chacun peut donner et prendre des livres. Elles sont fabriquées par des élèves de sections technologiques et sont éclairés grâce à des panneaux solaires. Des bénévoles les entretiennent et veillent à leur approvisionnement en livres. Dans le cadre des 50 ans du Traité de l´amitié franco-allemande, le Centre Français de Berlin a développé avec l’aide de l’OFAJ un partenariat franco-allemand afin de diffuser cette initiative de l´autre côté du Rhin. Le travail se déroule dans le cadre de plusieurs programmes d’échanges franco- allemands entre des élèves de Lycées professionnels et formateurs du secteur professionnel. Participent du côté berlinois la OSZ Konstruktionsbautechnik Hans- Böckler-Schule et la OSZ Marcel Breuer et du côté français les Lycées professionnels Adrien Bolland de Poissy et Jules Vernes de Guingamp. Le coup d´envoi du projet est donné en novembre 2012 avec l´arrivée d´une cabine téléphonique allemande au lycée Adrienne Bolland à Poissy et le départ d´une cabine téléphonique française offerte par Orange à la Hans-Böckler-Schule à Berlin qui est en partenariat avec le lycée Jules Vernes de Guingamp. Les élèves des sections Ebénisterie et Electrotechnique du lycée Adrienne Bolland en partenariat avec la Marcel-Breuer-Schule ont à charge de réaliser une "BiblioboXX" qui sera dans un premier temps installée dans la cour du Rectorat de l’Académie de Versailles. OBJECTIF DU PROJET : Transformer des cabines téléphoniques françaises et allemandes hors service en bibliothèque de partage de livres. -

The property of a connoisseur and aesthete, this collection was formed over more than three decades and showcases the sophisticated focused taste of a true collector. Highlights include furniture by the acclaimed Roentgen dynasty and treasures by Fabergé, jewelers to the Russian Imperial Court. Another important component at the core of the collection is silver, ranging from important 17th century figures from Augsburg to a French silver-gilt table service and a suite of Russian silver table cutlery also by Fabergé. Comprising 200 lots in total, each item was acquired specifically for its history, quality or craftsmanship, evoking a golden age of regal and aristocratic patronage and artistic achievement. The broad array of works of art, decorative objects and furnishings featured will appeal to both collectors and decorators alike, with estimates ranging from £500 to £100,000. ROENTGEN Abraham and David Roentgen, the celebrated German cabinet-makers from Neuwied, were amongst the craftsmen that this collector admired the most. David Roentgen’s elegant neoclassical furniture was renowned throughout Europe for its beautiful mahogany veneers, pure lines and technical innovation; attracting clientele including Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and Catherine the Great. The sale presents several superb pieces created by Roentgen, including examples executed in his ‘à la Mosaïque’ or illusionistic marquetry, such as the exceptionally rare table inlaid with a portrait medallion of Landgraf Friedrich II von Hessen-Kassel (estimate: £40,000-60,000). -

Ancient Greek Furniture: Source of Inspiration for the Designers and Manufacturers of Modern Times
Proceedings of the XXVI th International Conference Research for Furniture Industry Ancient greek furniture: source of inspiration for the designers and manufacturers of modern times Vasiliki KAMPERIDOU, Vasileios VASILEIOU Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Abstract: Although the Greeks borrowed the original design of their furniture during the Classical era from the culture of Egyptians and other surrounding peoples, the furniture styles were transformed by Greeks and these Greek furniture styles influenced and continue to influence furniture styles into the modern centuries. The Greek furniture tended to be round, curved, of softer style, more ornamental, comfortable, supportive to the body, symmetrical and functional than the styles of Egyptian furniture. The ancient history of furniture came to us principally from the art records left to us by the earlier society and specifically, the knowledge came from numerous configurations that were found on Greek vases, sculptures, inscriptions, tombstones, coins, reliefs in the Parthenon, paintings in pottery, relief curvings and other illustrated examples depicted in Greek art. In this study the main and most popular forms and styles of ancient Greek furniture of Classical and Hellenistic era, that have been recorded, such as stools (Bathron, Diphros Okladias, Thronos, footstools), tables, kline (a banquet couch), chairs (klismos), chests etc. are presented and analyzed. Valuable information is also recorded about their construction, the materials and types of connection used in furniture construction, as well as, the tools and machinery being used by the craftsmen. Principal goal of this study is to examine the significance of these unique pieces of furniture for the daily life of that times, the evolution of the architecture and designs of ancient Greek furniture through the ages, the inspiration of the modern designers and manufacturers by them and the reappearance of ancient Greek forms and designs in modern artefacts. -

Joiners from all over the world have been using it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, especially when adjacent pieces connect at right angles. The mortise and tenon joints are strong and stable joints that can be used in many projects. The joint mortise and tenon is considered one of the strongest joints next to the joint. [citation required] They provide a strong result and connect by gluing or locking in place. Mortise and tenon joint also give an attractive lookout. A disadvantage to this joint is the difficulty in doing so due to the precise and tight cutting required. In its most basic form, a mortise and tenon joint is simple and strong. There are many variations of this type of articulation, but the basic mortise and tenon have two components: the mortise hole, and the tenon tongue. The tenon, formed at the end of a member commonly referred to as a rail, fits into a square or rectangular hole cut into the other corresponding member. The tenon is cut to fit exactly in the mortise hole. Usually have shoulders that sit when the joint fully enters the mortise hole. The joint can be glued, fastened or fastened to lock it in place. This joint is also used with other materials. For example, it is traditionally used by masons and blacksmiths. -
