The project considers examples from D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, and Evelyn Waugh, and examines how these authors employ presentations of architecture in their narratives to portray the irrevocably altered landscape of modernity. The introduction presents the notion of national consciousness and literature, moving from Lukacs' conception of the historical novel to Victorian art critics John Ruskin and Walter Pater and their writings on national identity and architecture. Twentieth-century European culture responded to the trauma of the Great War with an outpouring of artistic production examining the transformations of the modern era. The importance of commemoration and the preservation of cultural images influence the creation of culturally nostalgic spaces within the novel. Beginning with John Ruskin's architectural theory in The Stones of Venice and The Seven Lamps of Architecture and Walter Pater's aesthetic interiors in Imaginary Portraits, I highlight ideas of architectural iii topography embodying national identity. I trace this theory through the modern novel and responses to the Great War and cultural nostalgia. Chapter One "The Domestic Ravages of War: D.H. Lawrence and the Home Front," examines the way in which the industrial post-war era intersects with architecture and social space in the work of D.H. Lawrence. Ruskin's influence pervades Lawrence's work, particularly in descriptions of the domestic postwar landscape. I consider portrayals of homes and landscapes of rural England in The Rainbow, Women in Love, Lady Chatter ley's Lover, The Virgin and the Gypsy as well as Lawrence's early short stories. Chapter Two, "Woolf and the Familial Structure of Mourning," focuses on how the Victorian conception of nostalgia is transformed in post-WWI novels of Virginia Woolf. Pater's interiors and aesthetic responses influence Woolf s portrayals of family homes and mourning. Using Jacob's Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves, and Carlyle 's House and Other Sketches, I highlight Woolf s use of familial sites to express emptiness, displacement, and pain reflective of a fragmented post-war culture. Chapter Three, "Ford Madox Ford's and the Dismantling of England," explores Ford's tetralogy Parade's End as a chronicle of the demise of English heritage through the physical destruction of its homes and gardens. Chapter Four, "The English Country House and Evelyn Waugh: Mourning Modernity," explores Waugh's use of domestic architecture in both the early novels, including Decline and Fall, Vile Bodies, and A Handful of Dust as well as the later nostalgic works, Put Out More Flags and Brideshead Revisited. His novels blend the Ruskinian notion of architecture as national identity and Paterian attention to nostalgia and interiors; they use architecture to both mourn the onslaught of modernity and foreshadow the decline of English culture. iv My conclusion highlights the ways in which these modernist writers craft a collective nostalgia within their texts based on architectural referents. It also points to the legacy of architecture and memory in post-modern writers like Kazuo Ishiguro and Penelope Lively, who continue to develop the signifiers provided by cultural landscape and architecture to explore history, memory, and nostalgia in a century of violence. Finally, I draw a link the communicative properties of the legacy of English literary interiors in post-colonial fiction. It focuses on modern British literary culture and the construction of social memory, and it explores responses to the Great War and modernity through the derogation of England's physical landscape. I consider the work of D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, and Evelyn Waugh as examples, certainly not unique, of how architecture continues to function in literature as a reflection of culture in post-war narratives. Drawing connections between the development of architecture and an English cultural aesthetic in the Victorian era, I emphasize this adapted continuous tradition in the fiction of the Great War and inter-war years as a way to reflect on the altered landscape. Twentieth-century European culture responded to the Great War with a variety of physical monuments and organized public mourning. The importance of commemoration and the preservation of cultural images in the Modern era reshape Victorian textual memory and create of a commemorative space within the novel. Modernism here is defined widely; as David Ayers posits, modernism studies are quite naturally spread 1 across literature, theatre, music, and art in the first half of twentieth-century Europe: "Indeed [they] ought really to reach back into the nineteenth century, to the poetry of Baudelaire or the music

    ‘PRETTY BIG AND SERIOUS’: FORD MADOX FORD AND THE YOUNG LOVELL Paul Skinner Introduction There is a peculiar fascination about the work that borders – chrono- logically and sometimes thematically – on an acknowledged master- piece. The Marsden Case, Ford’s 1923 novel, touches on many of the themes of Some Do Not . and preceded it by less than a year, while, just before The Good Soldier, there was – exactly one hundred years ago – The Young Lovell.1 From his hotel in St. Rémy-de-Provence in March 1913, Ford wrote to his agent, James Pinker: ‘Let me whisper into your secretive ear that the novel I am now writing is going to be one of the great historical novels of the world; no doubt you will let that fact be reflected in the contract that I understand you to be making for me’.2 And, again to Pinker, two weeks later: The title of the book is, for the time being, ‘The Young Lovell’, a Romance of the Borders. The date is towards the end of the XVth Century, running up to the beginnings of the Reformation, though it isn’t in that sense concerned with religion. The action takes place in Northumberland and the story contains any number of things concerning ‘The Percy out of Northum- berland’, the Bishops Palatine of Durham, the besieging of castles, border raids, and so on with what is called ‘a strong element of the supernatural’ and a vigorous love interest. This is rather putting the matter in terms of advertisement, but the book will be, when it is done, a pretty big and serious historical work, rather like ‘The Fifth Queen’, but, in a sense, more romantic.

Wells to Octavia Butler by Rosalind Diaz Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Katherine Snyder, Chair This dissertation turns to alien invasion narratives to elucidate the social, ethical and political consequences associated with the modern body as an entity with clearly defined borders. The imperatives of liberalism and neoliberalism constitute the modern body as a white, male, heteronormative body, navigating appropriate relationships to production and consumption. How does the human body emerge as a bounded entity in science and science fiction from the nineteenth century onward? Alien invasion narratives offer a fruitful way to trace this concept and its development over time. These narratives model proper ways of attending to one’s body as well as proper ways of defending oneself—and, by extension, the planet—from alien invasion. The present inquiry focuses on three different alien invasion narratives, beginning with H. G. Wells’s influential The War of the Worlds (1897), before moving to consider a pair of twentieth- century American texts: Philip Kaufman’s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Octavia Butler’s novel Fledgling (2005).

    INTRODUCTION Rob Hawkes Some Do Not . (1924), No More Parades (1925), A Man Could Stand Up – (1926), and Last Post (1928), known collectively as Parade’s End, have long been recognised – alongside The Good Soldier (1915) – as Ford Madox Ford’s finest achievements as a novelist. Indeed, many regard the tetralogy not just as Ford’s best, but as one of the very best works of the twentieth century. Writing in the New Statesman in 2010, for example, John N. Gray described Parade’s End as ‘possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in Eng- lish’.1 Very often, furthermore, those who have celebrated Parade’s End have been distinguished writers in their own right: W. H. Auden observed that: ‘There are not many English novels which deserve to be called great: Parade’s End is one of them’; Anthony Burgess called Ford’s masterpiece ‘the finest novel about the First World War’; and Malcolm Bradbury described it as ‘a central Modernist novel of the 1920s, in which it is exemplary’.2 The risk of emphasising remarks like these, however, is that they foster a sense of Ford as a ‘writer’s writer’ who fails to engage a wider audience. The suspicion, in other words, may be that despite the ringing endorsements of well-known luminaries – or perhaps even because of them – the appeal of the text in question might be purely esoteric, alienating readers lacking the literary pedigree of an Auden, a Bradbury, or a Burgess. For some, highlighting the novel’s modernism, as Bradbury does, might also mark the text out as part of an inaccessible, elitist, and deliberately alienating project, hostile towards mass audiences (in line with the view most forcefully expressed by John Carey in The Intellectuals and the Masses).3 Burgess focuses on the other major lens though which Parade’s End has frequently been viewed: the First World War.

    RAPID RISK ASSESSMENT Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic: increased transmission in the EU/EEA and the UK – sixth update 12 March 2020 Summary On 31 December 2019, a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown aetiology was reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. On 9 January 2020, China CDC reported a novel coronavirus as the causative agent of this outbreak, which is phylogenetically in the SARS-CoV clade. The disease associated with the virus is referred to as novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As of 11 March 2020, 118 598 cases of COVID-19 were reported worldwide by more than 100 countries. Since late February, the majority of cases reported are from outside China, with an increasing majority of these reported from EU/EEA countries and the UK. The Director General of the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. All EU/EEA countries and the UK are affected, reporting a total of 17 413 cases as of 11 March. Seven hundred and eleven cases reported by EU/EEA countries and the UK have died. Italy represents 58% of the cases (n=10 149) and 88% of the fatalities (n=631). The current pace of the increase in cases in the EU/EEA and the UK mirrors trends seen in China in January-early February and trends seen in Italy in mid-February. In the current situation where COVID-19 is rapidly spreading worldwide and the number of cases in Europe is rising with increasing pace in several affected areas, there is a need for immediate targeted action.

    Proceedings of the XXVI th International Conference Research for Furniture Industry Ancient greek furniture: source of inspiration for the designers and manufacturers of modern times Vasiliki KAMPERIDOU, Vasileios VASILEIOU Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Abstract: Although the Greeks borrowed the original design of their furniture during the Classical era from the culture of Egyptians and other surrounding peoples, the furniture styles were transformed by Greeks and these Greek furniture styles influenced and continue to influence furniture styles into the modern centuries. The Greek furniture tended to be round, curved, of softer style, more ornamental, comfortable, supportive to the body, symmetrical and functional than the styles of Egyptian furniture. The ancient history of furniture came to us principally from the art records left to us by the earlier society and specifically, the knowledge came from numerous configurations that were found on Greek vases, sculptures, inscriptions, tombstones, coins, reliefs in the Parthenon, paintings in pottery, relief curvings and other illustrated examples depicted in Greek art. In this study the main and most popular forms and styles of ancient Greek furniture of Classical and Hellenistic era, that have been recorded, such as stools (Bathron, Diphros Okladias, Thronos, footstools), tables, kline (a banquet couch), chairs (klismos), chests etc. are presented and analyzed. Valuable information is also recorded about their construction, the materials and types of connection used in furniture construction, as well as, the tools and machinery being used by the craftsmen. Principal goal of this study is to examine the significance of these unique pieces of furniture for the daily life of that times, the evolution of the architecture and designs of ancient Greek furniture through the ages, the inspiration of the modern designers and manufacturers by them and the reappearance of ancient Greek forms and designs in modern artefacts.

Joiners from all over the world have been using it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, especially when adjacent pieces connect at right angles. The mortise and tenon joints are strong and stable joints that can be used in many projects. The joint mortise and tenon is considered one of the strongest joints next to the joint. [citation required] They provide a strong result and connect by gluing or locking in place. Mortise and tenon joint also give an attractive lookout. A disadvantage to this joint is the difficulty in doing so due to the precise and tight cutting required. In its most basic form, a mortise and tenon joint is simple and strong. There are many variations of this type of articulation, but the basic mortise and tenon have two components: the mortise hole, and the tenon tongue. The tenon, formed at the end of a member commonly referred to as a rail, fits into a square or rectangular hole cut into the other corresponding member. The tenon is cut to fit exactly in the mortise hole. Usually have shoulders that sit when the joint fully enters the mortise hole. The joint can be glued, fastened or fastened to lock it in place. This joint is also used with other materials. For example, it is traditionally used by masons and blacksmiths.
