This Thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities Classics and Ancient History 2014 i Preface Jerome’s writings first came to my attention as an undergraduate. I was attracted by the vividness of his writing but puzzled that the female recipients of his correspondence tolerated such a vain, irascible and misogynistic mentor. I took my initial, tentative thesis to Dr Neil O’Sullivan, Discipline Chair of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia and Dr Michael Champion who listened patiently and encouraged me to persevere with a doctoral thesis. I am grateful to both men for their advice and suggestions in shaping this work. Dr O’Sullivan’s command of the classics pointed me in new and interesting directions. Dr Champion was extremely forbearing in listening to every new idea, commenting helpfully on successive drafts and making mentoring sessions enjoyable. I would also like to acknowledge the loving support of my husband, Tony, and our four adult children who have encouraged me and accepted my preoccupation without reproach. The translations in the thesis are my own, except where otherwise acknowledged. Translations of certain commentators have been included as reference points to my own and I have indicated where my interpretations differ from theirs. A new edition has just appeared, bearing the approbation of high Church authorities. And here is what one reads on page 103: "'Q. Can heretics be tolerated, and if so, on what condi- tions?' "'A. PACKARD SMITH COLLEGE No one has ever really doubted the oft-asserted theory that no part of the middle ages can be studied apart from the Chris- tian Church. All-embracing in its influence from the fall of Rome to the Reformation, it is generally conceded to have reached its zenith during the pontificate of Innocent III, not only because of the perfection of its organization at that time but also by reason of its readiness under his leadership to take issue with any or all of the secular powers of Europe over a variety of questions which, in only too many instances, had little obvious connection with the Christian faith. Its ambi- tions were large but, by methods which were sometimes un- scrupulous, they were almost always realized. At the beginning of the thirteenth century, northwestern Europe was still deeply engrossed in the century-old struggle between France and England for the control of the English lands in France. -
1 in the Word Made Flesh: Toward a Sacramental
IN THE WORD MADE FLESH: TOWARD A SACRAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF WORDS IN WORSHIP DANIELLE L. THOMPSON Thesis under the direction of Professors Robert MacSwain and James F. Turrell My argument is that words proclaimed and received in the Church‟s worship have a sacramental character equal to that of baptism and eucharist. The argument is occasioned by the debate surrounding Open Table in the Episcopal Church. In reviewing the positions for and against the practice of welcoming unbaptized persons to receive communion, I determined that both proponents of Open Table (who may be said to prioritize the Eucharist in the church‟s sacramental life) and proponents of the traditional, “font-to-table” sequence (who may be said to prioritize baptism) neglect the sacramental role of words. As “sacramental,” words can be powerful vehicles of God‟s grace that point to the incarnational presence of the Word (Jesus) among us. They effect a real transformation that is initiatory, in calling a person to conversion, a concern of those who advocate Open Table. Words also form and sustain committed believers, a concern of those who advocate for the traditional sequence. Specifically, as sacramental, words draw us into closer intimacy with Jesus, make tangible the hope that he incarnates, and inspires us in mission with him. This three-fold effect is highlighted in each of the chapters below. In three chapters entitled, “Words of God,” “Words about God,” and “Words Made Flesh,” I consider how the reading of Scripture, preaching, and the eucharistic prayer function sacramentally within the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. -

This book deals with this secular aspect of the religious community at Fountains, investigating in particular the way in which prosaic business records were compiled and redacted. It traces the transmission of data from original charters through successive versions of cartularies, and in the process establishes the existence of a previously unknown manuscript. It also reveals how abbots in the fi �teenth century interacted with and adapted the records in their care. In this process, two quite different aspects of monastic life are uncovered. First, it sheds new light on the history of Fountains Abbey through the fourteenth and fi �teenth centuries, amongst other things how it responded to the turmoil of the Black Death, and discloses for the fi rst time the allegiance of one abbot to the Lancastrian cause during the Wars of the Roses. Second, it reveals the worldly skills shown by the community of Fountains that were successfully applied to exploit the monastery’s large landholdings across Yorkshire, mainly through wool and agricultural production, but also through fi sheries, tanning, mining, and metalworking. -

The Great Excommunicator (2002) by Rev. Anthony Cekada Bp. Kelly’s communion rules divide families and violate canon law. YOUNG TRADITIONAL Catholics often worry about finding the right potential spouse — will I find a mate with whom I can share and practice my faith? This worry is often compounded because of the divisions that exist among various traditional Catholic groups, a situation produced by the defection of the hierarchy at Vatican II, who otherwise would now be keeping order among faithful Catho- lics. In Cincinnati where I now work, this difficulty is particular- ly acute due to the presence of a parish operated by Bishop Clar- ence Kelly’s Society of St. Pius V (SSPV) and his Daughters of Mary. His organization’s policy is to refuse Holy Communion to people who assist at my Mass, and otherwise treat them as non- Catholics. Often there is a nasty public scene at their church when an SSPV priest grills a suspect communicant at the rail, and then passes him by if he gets the wrong answers. (The most recent victim: a 90-year-old Cincinnati granny, visiting an SSPV church in Cleveland.) The local SSPV school principal even exacts a written oath from parents that they and their children will not receive sacra- ments at my church. You can imagine the difficulties that ensue, then, when a young man from the SSPV parish, say, takes an interest in a young lady from mine, and marriage looms. The SSPV clergy pressure the young man and his family to get the young woman to “convert” — formally renounce any connection with me and agree to raise any children in “their” church. -
