Second Sunday in Ordinary Time When we look at the Church’s liturgical calendar, the January 17, 2016 term “ordinary” does not mean “average” or “boring.” Ordinary here means “not seasonal” and is the part of the year counted using ordinal numbers, not included in the major liturgical seasons. The seasons of Christmas and Easter remind us of the great truths of our Catholic faith: the incarnation, Saturday, January 16 and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These Vigil of Second Sunday in Ordinary Time weeks in Ordinary Time take us through the life of our 4:00 p.m. Mass at St. Philip – Dick Lawrence Lord. Symbolized by the color green, it is a hopeful time (Dee Domer) 5:30 p.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Fr. Harold Schneider of growth and conversion, a time for living the life to (Fr. Mike Nimocks) which Christ has called us. Sunday, January 17 Today’s Gospel is one that is very familiar to us. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time It was at the wedding at Cana in Galilee that Jesus Readings: 66: Is 62:1-5/Ps 96:1-3, 7-10/1 Cor 12:4-11/ performed the first of his signs. By doing so, Jesus Jn 2:1-11 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Philip – James Kennedy revealed his glory and we are told that his disciples (Leo Kennedy) began to believe in him. It is human nature to look 11:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Rodney Ralston to signs to help us believe. Whenever we witness a (Mary S. Schmitz) Sacrament, whether at a wedding or at today’s Mass, Monday, January 18 Readings: 311: 1 Sm 15:16-23/ Ps 50:8-9, 16b-17, 21, 23/ we are seeing an efficacious sign of God’s grace. Mk 2:18-22 Many of our children are using this period of 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Philip – Marian Dolbow Ordinary Time to grow in faith and to prepare for a life of (JoAn Dumas) discipleship.
