(614-471-1930 [email protected]) SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 20, 2019 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK This past fall, Parish Council invited parishioners to participate in a survey about the condition of our physical plant. Council’s aim was to gather information to assist them in making long-term recommendations to meet parish needs. Over 200 parishioners responded. Not everyone rated everything; lots of respondents did not feel comfortable rating the school. Over the next several weeks, members of Parish Council will be sharing their analyses of the results of the survey. They did hear what people said, and they will take account of what they heard in providing future advice to the pastor. On another subject, the parish has recently experienced lots of repairs. In November we discovered that the mixer for the church’s sound system (which has been serving us for decades) needs replacing. The blower on the organ is nearly dead. About ten years ago the maintenance company replaced the original blower with a rebuilt unit. The rebuilt unit now needs replacing, and there are no rebuilt units on the market. On Christmas Day, Dick Baird discovered that the main pump on the boiler in the school had stopped working. Because the system has no automatic shut-off, the subsidiary pumps kept running till their motors burnt out. Naturally, we had to arrange for an emergency repair. We’ve replaced the main pump and fixed the subsidiary motors, but there are still problems with heating in the school. During the Christmas break we arranged for the removal of asbestos above the drop-down ceiling in the cafeteria. We continue monitoring the asbestos in other areas of the school and will react immediately should any of it need abating (there’s a diocesan office to assist us in evaluation and removal). The lights in the gym will shortly be replaced with LED bulbs and we will be installing a motion sensor so that the lights will go off automatically when there’s nobody in the gym (somebody has been leaving the lights burning…). None of these repairs/replacements was on the radar when the Finance Committee prepared this year’s budget. All except the last were crisis fixes. As for the last: the contractor assures the parish that there will be a sizeable rebate if we act now. The point of this litany is that our plant and our equipment are aging. A group of highly qualified parishioners are in the process of preparing an audit of the entire physical plant so that we can project what needs maintenance and plan to do it before it becomes urgent. In the meantime, our maintenance staff keeps the ship afloat and steaming ahead. They deserve our heartfelt gratitude. Sincerely, Father John JUBILEE OF ANNIVERSARIES – A CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE IN THE PARISH Calling all couples celebrating their 5s and 10s (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, etc.) and 60+ (every year thereafter) anniversaries of marriage this calendar year.
