2016 IMPACT REPORT GOING WIDER Three things will last forever – FOR SENIORS GOING DEEPER faith, FOR FAMILIES hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 Dear CSS Family, Thanks to your generosity, partnership, and prayers, Catholic Social Services has been meeting the pressing needs of our community with compassion for 70 years. This year, we were able to do some really great things together! We had the opportunity to serve 21% more seniors, launched the Foster Grandparent Program, celebrated the second anniversary of the St. Francis Center in Portsmouth, and began the expansion of the new Our Lady of Guadalupe Center. St. Teresa used to say “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small Rachel Lustig things with great love.” Doing things with love: that is the Catholic Social Services President & CEO way. At CSS, we strive to do our work with faith, hope, and love. This informs the way that we treat our clients and work with them to reach their potential. In our work and in our world, things can seem grim, and it is so important to remember that, with God’s grace, transformation can and does happen, and that when we work together in faith, hope, and love, anything is possible. Thank you for helping make our world brighter for over 30,000 people! Thomas R. Here is one of their stories: hope, Being a Payee client was not always easy for Rose. “At first, I didn’t understand how the program worked. I was angry that someone else had control of my money because I didn’t feel and love like I was independent.” Rose’s feelings are normal for Payee clients. The Payee Program provides individualized financial management to those who are unable to manage their own financial affairs. Individuals in the program are often required to participate, and the change can be hard. But luckily, things got better for Rose. “I realized that I could trust Catholic Social Services to help me, and I could still make my own choices.” For Rose, working with her Payee Specialist, Julie, has been one of the best parts of the program. “Julie has been there to make sure my rent and bills are paid on time and that I make better choices with my money. She makes Your faith has sure I think about saving up for things saved you; that I might need in the future for myself and my kids. Without the Payee go in peace. Program, I wouldn’t have any of the Luke 7:50 things I have now.” Rose has noticed a drastic difference in her life, now that she has Catholic Social Services (CSS) as an advocate and support. “For the first time in over four years, I am able to have my children come stay with me on weekends, which is a huge deal for me. Life is still difficult for me sometimes, but compared to [before], it’s amazing.” Now, Rose is able to enjoy the simple things, such as owning her own washer and dryer, watching her favorite TV shows – Law & Order and The Golden Girls – and she recently bought a rat-terrier/Chihuahua mix from the animal shelter, named Scout. This year, something even more special is on the horizon. Every parent dreams of being able to give their children a joyful memory of Christmas, and for the first time in years, Rose will be able to provide that for her family. 95% of senior clients say CSS helps them “I would recommend CSS to others because it has taken a lot stay independent. of stress off me,” said Rose. I don’t have to worry about if I’m going to have enough to cover my rent and bills. They really do care about people, and they want to help.” 4 HELPING FAMILIES THRIVE Together we served 28,590 people through our family services. Here is one family’s story: faith, Fina was thirty-eight when she immigrated to the United States from Italy with her husband and two children. In Milan, she hope, had been a stay-at-home mom, but with her youngest daughter getting ready to start first grade, she was excited to rejoin the workforce and start a new life in the United States.
