FOREWORD New dimensions are offered in the courses of study in history and the social sciences to cope with the realities of today and meet the challenges of the future. Our world is changing so rapidly that any static presentation of subject matter becomes obsolete. Also, the explosion of knowledge necessi- tates a functional approach to facts as related to concepts, the most important raw material of instruction. These courses of study emphasize student development of concepts and understandings that can be applied to new situations, training in critical thinking through a problem-solving approach, studies in depth and the use of multi-media materials of instruction. To achieve competence, students must be provided with experiences to help them acquire skills related to concept development. A comprehensive graded skills chart is provided as part of the Introduction, to guide the teacher in planning for instruction in these skills. This bulletin is one of a series designed to provide students at all grade levels with a revitalized curriculum. Leading scholars in the appropriate disciplines have been consulted, and the findings of social studies teach- ing research throughout the country have been incorporated in developing this program. The Prekindergarten through the twelfth year program in history and the social sciences seeks to build and strengthen respect for the insti- tutions that contribute to the realization of the American dream. The social studies, together with other curriculum areas, have the responsibility for the transmission of the goals of justice, socialprogress and the improve- ment of economic conditions to the students. These courses of study rightfully stress the development of democracy- its values and processes. Teachers and supervisors are given opportunities in these bulletins to plan for effective teaching for "the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy" ina changing world. Human dignity and respect for others, if they are to have any meaning, must be demonstrated in the classroom and the school setting.Furthermore, attention must be focused on the necessity for law at" order, and the role of civil disobedience in the struggle for justice. Provision is made for students to learn about the diversity of cultures around the world and the pluralistic nature of our American society. These new courses of study and suggested learning activities are offered in a preliminary edition, based on the reports of pilot schools throughout the city which experimented with earlier mimeographed editions of this guide. These reports, reviews and appraisals were considered in the writing of this bulletin. The Introduction details the basic principles on which the program is built. Successful implementation of this course of study requires a variety of pupil materials and an in-service program of teacher retraining. Several meetings have been held with publishers and producers of instructional materials which should eventuate in the production of more relevant and innovative texts and non-text materials. To aid in the training of teachers, the Bureau of History and the Social Sciences has prepared a series of television programs incon- junction with an in-service program of district workshops. The implementation of this course of study is vested in the district superin- tendent and the supervisory and teaching staff of the city. Individual schools and districts may make adaptations in the materials to meet special needs. Since this is a preliminary bulletin, revision will be made on the basis of feed-back reports which will be found at the end of this publication. Teachers and supervisors are requested to submit these reports to the district superin- tendent and the Bureau of History and Social Sciences. Loretan, Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. The current program is supervised by Deputy Superintendent of Schools Seelig Lester. Overall designs, curriculum revision plans, pilot-school tryouts, and evaluation were organized under the.direction of William H. Bristow, Assistant Superintendent, assisted by staff members of the Bureau of Curriculum Development. LeonardW. Ingraham, Acting Director of the Bureau of History and the Social Sciences, has coordinated the program since its inception in 1962 and has served as director of the workshops engaged in the production of curriculum materials. I had just finished my sophomore year at Harvard in the winter of 1947. It was a peculiar time for me. I had been too young for the War, and the thousands of GI’s on campus gave me the feeling of having been left out of a tremendously important, once-in-a-lifetime event. They had taken part in this great crusade against the forces of evil and I had spent those years sheltered in the insular safety of the United States. One evening a Boston lawyer by the name of Eddie Parsons (then and now a member of Kibbutz Kfar Blum) addressed Jewish students at a Hillel House meeting on campus. He gave a thinly disguised recruiting call for the Hagana. Come to Palestine and serve for a year with the underground Jewish defense force was the message. I took him up on his invitation to come and talk about it, and I remember a long evening in the kitchen of his home in Brookline being introduced to a whole new, for me, set of issues. The British, our allies in the war against Hitler, were the villains.

May 1st is maypole day in Bavaria and a day for the local people to dress in their finest costumes and celebrate this important annual occasion. The hoisting of a maypole is an important part of all spring festivities. The earliest reports of Maypoles, as a symbol of all things that grow and bear fruit, date back to the 13th century. The DSB’s Maibuam was erected several years ago, compliments of the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe with a traditional Maibaum Aufstellung. Our maypole was erected in the “old fashioned” way with ropes slung together between poles and a lot of muscle power. Centimeter by centimeter our Maibaum was slowly hoisted into the prepared hole. When all the work was done it was time to celebrate with music, food and dancing. Unlike other regions of Germany, in Bavaria the stripes are Bavarian weiss und blau (white and blue). Once the pole was erected it was hung with the beautiful painted shields, representing all the sub-groups of the Delaware Saengerbund. In Germany the symbols represent the local trades and guilds, ours show visitors the traditional groups within the DSB.

Quite simply, we are wired to go. It is said that the human ear reacts to certain sounds more than others. This is sound branding. Sound, most notably music, triggers emotions, auditory pleasures, memories and associations. Sound branding is a multi-sensory form of communication and a holistic corporate model, which drives perception. It also creates attention with familiar associations. It also differentiates from the dross of typical advertising media. The benefit of this auditory effect is that it enhances brand identity, loyalty, and thus increases sales.
