Journal of Transnational American Studies 10.2 (Winter/Spring 2019–20) Reprise Connecting a Different Reading Public: Compiling [A Companion to American Literature] Yu Jianhua Shanghai International Studies University At the end of 2015, ten years after the project was initiated, A Companion to American Literature was finally published by Commercial Press in Beijing. This was the first attempt in Chinese academia at compiling a large-scale handbook covering foreign literature published in China and in Chinese. The Companion provides readers in China with easy access to sources in order for them to gain a better understanding of three hundred years of American literature. It includes well-known authors and their major works, literary historians and critics, literary journals, awards, organizations and movements, as well as terminologies such as “tall tale” and “minstrel show” that are unique to American literature. We started in a small way in 2003 after a suggestion from Fudan University Press that we provide a handy companion on American literature for Chinese undergraduates and graduate students. After American Literature: Authors and Their Works was published in 2005, a more ambitious plan emerged for a new handbook that was to be more comprehensive, and one that was to be written in Chinese for Chinese readers. The proposition received financial support from the Shanghai International Studies University Research Fund, and later, The National Social Science Fund of China, with more than thirty professors and young scholars participating in the project. After decisions were made in regard to the general layout and entries, we set to work, each responsible for an area that he or she specialized in, and together we contributed to the project that came to fruition ten years later. -

The main subject of the project is Barbra Streisand (b. 1942), an individual who Kass identified with and idolized. Kass’s work is directly linked to both her experience growing up Jewish, and her identity as a lesbian. -

THE READER’S PROGRESS: THOMAS PYNCHON’S NOVELS AS ALLEGORIES OF CRITICAL READING PRACTICES SINCE 1945 by TOBIAS JULIAN MEINEL A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2010 Copyright Tobias Julian Meinel 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This project describes the influence of post-1945 cultural, societal, and political developments on reading practices in literature departments in the United States. Reading has been central to the way academics saw themselves in relation to their socio-political surroundings and has been a direct response to or expression of contemporary pressures between the years after World War II and the present. The distinct reading zeitgeist of each of these decades allows us to identify a number of paradigmatic reading stances: readers in the ivory tower, paranoid readers, doubtful readers, resisting readers, meta-readers, Luddite readers, and iconoclast readers. Thomas Pynchon is one of the few American authors who have published over this exact time span. His novels, when interpreted as allegories of reading, not only reflect the complex changes that have taken place in the reading zeitgeist since 1945 but also lure their readers into assuming certain roles. This “interpellative” function of Pynchon’s novels works in a way that disrupts and challenges the dominant reading paradigm. Pynchon’s sustained preoccupation with reading not only unifies his later novels with his “classical” work of the 1960s and 1970s but also shows him as the most prominent observer of and commentator on post-1945 reading practices in the academy. -

Wilcox All Rights Reserved January 2005 i ABSTRACT “Recombinant Media: The Mutation of Subjectivity in a Post-Print Culture” Johnnie A. Wilcox “Recombinant Media: The Mutation of Subjectivity in a Post-Print Culture” argues that subjectivity in American literary postmodernism is a transformation of the subject produced by print technology. This transformation comes about as a result of cultural shifts in media priority and the changes media themselves undergo as they incorporate techniques of other media. This study examines how the representation and production of subjectivity in several print objects is affected by the incorporation of techniques more characteristic of non-print media such as film, electronics, and music. The introduction traces the rise of non-print media such as film, electricity, and radio and argues that these media both augment and deform is such a way that print media then produces “recombinant media” which dramatically alter the subject normally produced by print. The first chapter considers how Gravity’s Rainbow hybridizes its own media body to create from its reader a retribalized, cybernetic subject. The second chapter traces the origins of this mutated, postmodern subject back to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, arguing that the pressures of electricity and speech mutate Invisible Man into the prototype of the hacker. -
