We are excited to introduce the City’s newest professional CITY COUNCIL theatre project, Broadway at the Gardens as it presents its first Donald J. No stranger to this theatre, he recently directed our productions of The Secret Garden and Joseph… Dreamcoat. He also made a brief appearance here as the Duke in Big River directed by Susan Sluka- Kelly. Other favorite roles include Eric in Phantom , Capt Von Trapp in The Sound of Music , Oscar in Sweet Charity , The Cat in Honk! and Frank in Annie Get Your Gun . He appeared as Frank-n-Furter in the Hawaiian Premiere of The Rocky Horror Show , and Off Broadway in A ChristmasTwist and Wuthering Heights , the Musical . Last year he won an ITL award for his performance as Michael in I Do! I Do!, Jud in Oklahoma and as Cervantes/Quixote in Performance Riverside's production of Man of LaMancha . Recently John became the artistic director of the Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont. He will be reprising his role in Man of LaMancha during their 2009 season. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR What a large undertaking in a short amount of time with Sondheim’s most difficult score! Kudos to the cast, crew, musical, technical and design team. Sondheim’s masterpiece about a wronged barber seeking revenge has long been a favorite of mine. Having seen the recent John Doyle Broadway revival on their final dress rehearsal, I caught Sondheim there looking perturbed. It had been deconstructed with the small cast playing their own instruments as they sang; clear storytelling had been lost. In our version, I wanted to focus completely on the relationships and reasons that drive Sweeney to action. A corrupt judge of powerful stature does the unimaginable, giving permission to a society in downward spiral to lose all sense of morality.

Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much pre­emptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genre­based mass market entertainment.

On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary.

She recognises him as the barber Benjamin Barker who was convicted under wrong charges, his helpless wife Lucy lured to the Judge Turpin’s house by his assistant Beadle, and there, abused by the guardian of the law. To his inquiry about the whereabouts of Lucy and his daughter Johanna, Mrs Lovett professes that Lucy poisoned herself and Johanna has since been in the care of the Judge. Sweeney swears to seek justice and Mrs Lovett persuades him to take up his old trade. She has kept his knives. The pair make an ingenious plan: while waiting for the Judge, Sweeney will practice "on less honourable throats". Mrs Lovett delights at the unexpected meat supply for her pie shop.” ACT II Business is flourishing at Mrs Lovett’s pie shop, and Sweeney is busy disposing of his customers.

Historically, productions of ​Sweeney Todd ​have whitewashed this fact. Reimagined for the 21st century, our production of ​Sweeney Todd​ is looking to cast an inclusive and diverse company of actors who reflect the world we live in today. In reference to the character descriptions below​: The characters as written are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns, which you will see in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. In addition, we will list disability when specific to a character, but are otherwise seeking actors with disabilities as well as non-disabled actors for all roles. A cruel and evil judge called Turpin took a liking towards Lucy and contrived to send her husband to the Australian penal colonies for life. After 15 years of what he called ‘a living hell’, Barker escaped and re- turned to London on a ship where he met up with a sailor, Anthony, who only knew him as Sweeney Todd. This was his new, adopted name and he is described as ‘a heavy-set, saturnine man in his forties.’ Almost at once he is accosted by a beggar woman who is also a prostitute. This character appears throug- hout the play and has an ironic and tragic role to play at the end. He revisits his old premises now owned by a Mrs Nellie Lovett, a pie maker who remembers Barker and was sweet on him in the past and happily kept his shaving blades when he was arrested. Nobody has rented the old barber’s shop since he left it, so it is available for him to set up business again.
