Sweeney Todd won the Tony Award for best musical and was adapted to the screen in Tim Burton's recent film. Now is your chance to be a part of the complete masterpiece live on stage. This is sure to be one of the South Bay's most anticipated events for 2009! The Story: The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, “Sweeney Todd” nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. Director's Casting Note: The music is difficult and borders on operatic, so vocal training and stamina is essential. Very little dancing is required for this show. As long as you “move well" you should be fine. Everyone in the production needs to be a singer-actor. Sweeney Todd/Benjamin Barker (Bass/Baritone, 40s) A man consumed by revenge after his wife is kidnapped and raped, and he is wrongly convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Darkly cynical. Mrs. Nellie Lovett (Alto/Mezzo, Cockney Accent, moves well, 40s) An amoral, pragmatic seller of meat pies - takes practicality to a ridiculous level. She lusts after Todd. A very high-energy role. Joanna Barker (Soprano, 18) Benjamin Barker's daughter, a ward of Judge Turpin. Beautiful and pure-hearted. Anthony Hope (Tenor, 20s) A good natured, optimistic & naive young sailor. Begger Woman/Lucy Barker (Soprano) Barker's wife, who he believes to be dead. Schizophrenic personality ranging from pathetic to crudely suggestive. Judge Turpin (Bass/Baritone) A lustful, immoral, power hungry man. Twists the law to suit him. Beadle Bamford (Tenor) Judge Turpin's partner in crime. "A bully with a thin veneer of gentility." Adolfo Pirelli (Tenor) A charlatan who claims to be "the king of the barbers, the barber of kings." A very high tenor role. Tobias (Tenor, teens) Pirelli's young, simple, but kind-hearted drum-beating assistant. Ensemble: A wide variety of roles will come from the ensemble. Ensemble members must have strong, trained voices and good musicianship. They must also be able to demonstrate a strong concentration, intensity, and the ability to play “characters”. Ensemble Break-Down: Female: 3 Sopranos, 3 Altos Male: 2 Basses, 2 Baritones, and 2 Tenors .

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR What a large undertaking in a short amount of time with Sondheim’s most difficult score! Kudos to the cast, crew, musical, technical and design team. Sondheim’s masterpiece about a wronged barber seeking revenge has long been a favorite of mine. Having seen the recent John Doyle Broadway revival on their final dress rehearsal, I caught Sondheim there looking perturbed. It had been deconstructed with the small cast playing their own instruments as they sang; clear storytelling had been lost. In our version, I wanted to focus completely on the relationships and reasons that drive Sweeney to action. A corrupt judge of powerful stature does the unimaginable, giving permission to a society in downward spiral to lose all sense of morality.

Matt Reeves) USA 2007 Paramount Home Entertainment Diary of the Dead (Dir. George A. Romero) USA 2007 Optimum Home Entertainment [Rec] (Dir. Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much preemptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genrebased mass market entertainment.

Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London. Open for business since 1908. RACHEL EDWARDS JENNY GERSTEN SEAVIEW PRODUCTIONS NATE KOCH, Executive Producer FIONA RUDIN BARROW STREET THEATRE JEAN DOUMANIAN REBECCA GOLD “A Customer!” present My name is Rachel Edwards and I am the originating producer of Tooting Arts Club’s Sweeney The Tooting Arts Club production of Todd. On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary.

His companion is young sailor Anthony, who rescued Sweeney at sea. Upon their arrival, the men are greeted by a beggar woman. “Don’t I know you”, she asks Sweeney as he shoves her out of his way. Sweeney swears to seek justice and Mrs Lovett persuades him to take up his old trade. She has kept his knives. The pair make an ingenious plan: while waiting for the Judge, Sweeney will practice "on less honourable throats".
