Until a perfect solution is found, Jørgen Carling writes that self-archiving, while not perfect, allows researchers to bring their work out from behind paywalls without jeopardizing academic integrity, and, at no cost. Most academic journals allow authors to post their articles online after a while, for instance 12 or 18 months after publications. Very few social scientists do, unfortunately. Making publications available in this way is referred to as ‘green open access’ or ‘self-archiving’. While the debates about open access and the future of academic publishing continue, self-archiving is something most authors could do right away to make their work more widely available. To start self-archiving, you must be aware that an article exists in three important versions: 1) the version that you originally submitted; 2) the version that was eventually accepted for publication, after peer review; and 3) the published version incorporating copy-editing, layout and correction of proofs. It is version 2 that you are usually allowed to post after a certain period of time, never version 3. The difference between your final text (version 2) and the copy-edited published text (version 3) would usually make little difference to the general reader. Part of the argument for open-access publishing is indeed that science should become more widely available to all, not just people with access to university libraries. -

By following references, readers can verify facts or find more details about described topic. A Wikipedia article can be edited independently in any of over 300 languages, even by anonymous users, therefore information about the same topic may be inconsistent. This also applies to use of references in different language versions of a particular article, so the same statement can have different sources. In this paper we analyzed over 40 million articles from the 55 most developed language versions of Wikipedia to extract information about over 200 million references and find the most popular and reliable sources. We presented 10 models for the assessment of the popularity and reliability of the sources based on analysis of meta information about the references in Wikipedia articles, page views and authors of the articles. Using DBpedia and Wikidata we automatically identified the alignment of the sources to a specific domain. Additionally, we analyzed the changes of popularity and reliability in time and identified growth leaders in each of the considered months. The results can be used for quality improvements of the content in different languages versions of Wikipedia. -

Report of the Chair Paul Grannis introduced the new members of the Executive Committee and thanked the people who are retiring. He announced that Bruce Barnett of Johns Hopkins will begin a three-year term as organizer of the DPF Congressional Reception, and that Bob Cahn of LBNL will take over as Public Information Coordinator. Grannis also reminded the Executive Committee that Gene Beier will replace Frank Sciulli as the DPF representative on ICFA. Report of the Secretary-Treasurer As of November 1, 1997, the DPF account balance stood at $86,274. The prize account balances stood as follows: Panofsky, $64,103; Sakurai, $174,053; Wilson, $107,697. The Panofsky Prize Fund remains significantly underendowed. Citation Statistics from 110 Years of Physical Review
Citation Statistics from 110 Years of Physical Review Publicly available data reveal long-term systematic features about citation statistics and how papers are referenced. The data also tell fascinating citation histories of individual articles. In the 20th century, the Phys- ical Review branched into topical sections and spawned new journals (see figure 1). Today, all arti- cles in the Physical Review family of journals (PR) are available online and, as a useful byproduct, all cita- tions in PR articles are electronically available. The citation data provide a treasure trove of quantitative information. As individuals who write sci- entific papers, most of us are keenly interested in how often our own work is cited. In an era of intense emphasis on measuring academic performance, there has been a proliferation of scandals, questionable behaviors and devious stratagems involving not just individuals but also organizations, including universities, editors and reviewers, journal publishers, and conference organizers. This introduction first reviews the literature on the prevalence of academic misconduct, misrepresentation and gaming (MMG). The core of the article is organized around a life-cycle model of the production and dissemination of research results. We synthesize the findings in the MMG literature at the level of the investigator or research team, emphasizing that misbehavior extends well beyond fabrication and falsification to include behaviors designed to exaggerate or to mislead readers as to the significance of research findings. MMG is next explored in the post-research review, publication, and post-publication realms. Moving from the individual researcher to the organizational level, we examine how MMG can be engaged in by either journals or organizations employing or funding the researchers. -

This reference list manipulation (RLM) could take place during the peer-review process (e.g., coercive citation from editors or reviewers), or prior to it (e.g., a quid-pro-quo between authors). Surveys have estimated how many people may have been affected by coercive RLM at one time or another, but it is not known how many authors engage in RLM, nor to what degree. Examining a subset of active, highly published authors (n=20,803) in PubMed, we find the frequency of non-self citations (NSC) to one author coming from one paper approximates Zipf’s law. We propose the Gini Index as a simple means of quantifying skew in this distribution and test it against a series of “red flag” metrics that are expected to result from RLM attempts. -
