SIEGMAN DWARD L. GINZTON’S MULTIFACETED career spanned an era E of immense technological advances in physics, electronics, and microwaves—and of important advances in social and political issues. Throughout his long and productive life his remarkable combination of scientific skills, leadership quali- ties, technological foresight, and community concerns en- abled him to make distinguished technical contributions and to build enduring institutions in which others could make such contributions as well. Ginzton’s scientific career began in the late 1930s when he helped develop the understanding of feedback in early vacuum tube amplifiers and worked with the pioneers who invented the klystron. It continued through his leadership in developing modern microwave technologies and mega- watt-level klystron tubes during and after World War II, and in helping make possible the development of linear elec- tron accelerators both as mile-long “atom smashers” and as medical tools still in use worldwide for cancer radiation therapy. His abilities eventually led him to take distinguished roles in both the academic and industrial worlds and in local and national community service as well. 3 4 BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS By the end of his career Ginzton held some 50 funda- mental patents in electronics and microwave devices, had received the 1969 IEEE Medal of Honor “for his outstand- ing contributions in advancing the technology of high power klystrons and their applications, especially to linear particle accelerators,” and had been elected to the National Acad- emy of Sciences (1966) and the National Academy of Engi- neering(1965). -

By following references, readers can verify facts or find more details about described topic. A Wikipedia article can be edited independently in any of over 300 languages, even by anonymous users, therefore information about the same topic may be inconsistent. This also applies to use of references in different language versions of a particular article, so the same statement can have different sources. In this paper we analyzed over 40 million articles from the 55 most developed language versions of Wikipedia to extract information about over 200 million references and find the most popular and reliable sources. We presented 10 models for the assessment of the popularity and reliability of the sources based on analysis of meta information about the references in Wikipedia articles, page views and authors of the articles. Using DBpedia and Wikidata we automatically identified the alignment of the sources to a specific domain. Additionally, we analyzed the changes of popularity and reliability in time and identified growth leaders in each of the considered months. The results can be used for quality improvements of the content in different languages versions of Wikipedia. -

Introduction When I was approached by the editors of Physics in Perspecti6e to prepare an article on New York City for The Physical Tourist section, I was happy to do so. I have been a New Yorker all my life, except for short-term stays elsewhere on sabbatical leaves and other visits. My professional life developed in New York, and I married and raised my family in New York and its environs. Accordingly, writing such an article seemed a natural thing to do. About halfway through its preparation, however, the attack on the World Trade Center took place. -

APS Announces 2018 Prize and Award Recipients The APS would like to congratulate the recipients of these APS prizes and awards. They will be presented during APS award ceremonies throughout the year. Both March and April meeting award ceremonies are open to all APS members and their guests. At the March Meeting, the APS Prizes and Awards Ceremony will be held Monday, March 5, 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles, CA. At the April Meeting, the APS Prizes and Awards Ceremony will be held Sunday, April 15, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH. Report of the Chair Paul Grannis introduced the new members of the Executive Committee and thanked the people who are retiring. He announced that Bruce Barnett of Johns Hopkins will begin a three-year term as organizer of the DPF Congressional Reception, and that Bob Cahn of LBNL will take over as Public Information Coordinator. Grannis also reminded the Executive Committee that Gene Beier will replace Frank Sciulli as the DPF representative on ICFA. Report of the Secretary-Treasurer As of November 1, 1997, the DPF account balance stood at $86,274. The prize account balances stood as follows: Panofsky, $64,103; Sakurai, $174,053; Wilson, $107,697. The Panofsky Prize Fund remains significantly underendowed. Howard Georgi will take over the fund raising effort. Howard Gordon and Pat Burchat have volunteered to help. Report of the APS Treasurer Tom McIlrath presented a positive report on APS finances. -
Citation Statistics from 110 Years of Physical Review
Citation Statistics from 110 Years of Physical Review Publicly available data reveal long-term systematic features about citation statistics and how papers are referenced. The data also tell fascinating citation histories of individual articles. Sidney Redner he first article published in the Physical Review was Treceived in 1893; the journal’s first volume included 6 issues and 24 articles. In the 20th century, the Phys- ical Review branched into topical sections and spawned new journals (see figure 1). Today, all arti- cles in the Physical Review family of journals (PR) are available online and, as a useful byproduct, all cita- tions in PR articles are electronically available. The citation data provide a treasure trove of quantitative information. As individuals who write sci- entific papers, most of us are keenly interested in how often our own work is cited. During her September 27-28 visit to Fermilab for an onsite DOE review of the laboratory, Dresselhaus, director of the Department of EnergyÕs Office of Science, spoke with respect and affection of the professor she knew during her years as a University of Chicago graduate student, She referred often to FermiÕs legendary concern for graduate students and young physicists. Comes to ItÕs a concern she clearly shares. ÒYoung people are excited about high-energy physics,Ó Dresselhaus said, Òbut there are serious career problems for youth. This is not just a Fermilab problem, but a problem for high-energy physics generally. It can be hard to Fermilab envision a career when there is such a long lead time for experiments. The community will have to address this.Ó As a step in that direction, she began her laboratory visit with a Òfocus groupÓ of Fermilab graduate students and young physicists, to hear what was on their minds and to assure them of her support. The students responded enthusiastically. -

The Medal will be presented to at a Ceremonial Session of the AAPT Winter Meeting at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC, on Monday, February 15, 2010. Lila Adair, Chairman, AAPT Awards Committee, said, “Mary Beth is an amazing lady. She has dedicated her entire ca- reer to sharing her passion for physics and AAPT with her students, colleagues and fellow AAPT members. She is one of the few experts I turn to for the institutional history of AAPT, and I am so proud to be presenting the Phillips Medal to her.” As a long time AAPT member, Monroe has quietly and tenaciously served the organization at the state and national level for more than three decades. She served as AAPT Secretary and Chair of the Publications Committee from 2001-2007 and is currently serving as a member of the Committee on the Interests of Senior Physicists and as Chair of the Gover- nance Review Committee. She has played a leading role in developing networks among physicists teaching in Two Year Colleges that have led both to their increasing involvement in AAPT and to better teaching for the students who study physics in these schools “The Melba Newell Phillips Medal is AAPT’s highest recognition for member leadership and service. -
