29684_Stewardship.indd 19 12/12/12 1:34 PM STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS Support for Catholic Education Heats Up at Snow Ball

As if Jean and Tom Comer did not have enough to do as chaircouple for the Making a Di erence Dinner, Jean initiated another fundraising event that involved area Catholic school children. She came up with the idea for the First Annual Snow Ball, a charity dance involving students in grades ve through eight that was held in January and raised more than $13,000 for Catholic school tuition assistance. “I remember driving my children to a charity ball that is held in downtown Bu alo each year and thinking why couldn’t such an event work for Catholic education?” Jean explained. “The idea was to have Catholic school students helping other students in obtaining a Catholic education.” The idea was presented and enthusiastically received by the Diocese of Bu alo and it literally snowballed from there. The event was a completely volunteer e ort with eight di erent area Catholic schools participating, including donations from PTAs to cover initial start up costs. Almost everything was donated for the ball, including invitations, postage, promotional posters, paper products and food.

Ticket sales, at a cost of $25 per ticket, were handled by committee members from each participating school and couples from each school volunteered as chaperones. St. Gregory the Great Parish donated use of its ministry center for the event and volunteers took care of set up and clean up. Students from Catholic high schools such as Saint Joe’s, Canisius, Sacred Heart, Nardin and others volunteered to present Mission Moments at Catholic elementary schools to share stories of families in need and promote the importance of the Snow Ball. The high school students also volunteered to direct trac, serve food and chaperone at the ball.

More than 500 students took part in the Snow Ball, which was split into two times – one for fth and sixth grade students, and one for seventh and eighth. The success of the event means funds are available to provide tuition assistance for up to 25 more students. Plans are already underway for Snow Ball 2013 and several more Catholic schools have expressed an interest in participating. Fifth through eighth-grade students at Catholic schools gathered for the rst annual Snow Ball to raise funds for “The Holy Spirit was denitely working to make the Snow Ball possible.
