Excellence - Possessing great qualities in high degree; always going above and beyond; being the very best you can be. 3. Responsibility - Reliability or dependability; possessing moral and mental accountability. 4. Leadership - Exhibiting INTEGRITY, EXCELLENCE, and RESPONSIBILITY, and inspiring others to be the best they can be. 4 A letter from the Board President and Executive Director Buffalo Prep has experienced a year of significant change as we adapted to restructured leadership, welcomed new members to our staff and faculty, and adopted a strategic plan that challenges us to go deeper with the services we provide our students. Ensuring that their academic success is matched by their social and emotional well-being and feeling of empowerment is of utmost importance. We are in the process of transforming our curriculum to integrate a culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy that not only prepares our students for the rigor of our partner high schools, but also reflects and celebrates their individuality, culture, and inherent talents while engaging them as democratic citizens. Visits to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Food Bank of WNY, and Jericho Road Community Health Center’s Vive Program as well as clean-up days with Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, and the University at Buffalo provided strategic active learning opportunities to mirror classroom material. This year of transition led to other innovative collaborations and strengthened existing partnerships. Our 19 partner high schools, the Bison Scholarship Fund, the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood, the Buffalo Public Schools, Child & Family Services, the College Simulation Experience, the Education Collaborative of Western New York, Say Yes Buffalo, Teach for America, Westminster Economic Development Initiative, and additional programs are equally driven by the belief that all students should be expected to succeed and given the opportunity to do so. When educational equity is attained, prepared and empowered students translate into a robust community and workforce. With the creation of Alumni Prep, we expanded our impact on, and resources for, our students by extending our pipeline from the summer after 5th grade through college completion as well as internship and career placement. We now serve approximately 600 students and alumni annually and are thrilled to have alumna, Maya Meredith, on our staff, managing the implementation of this important next step in our history. Officially launching Phase II of our Prep for Tomorrow capital campaign is yet another exciting and necessary part of our evolution. With our community’s endorsement and financial support of Phase I, we now move on to fundraising for the outfitting of our state-of-the-art home, which is currently being renovated and brought up to code. All of this great success, the incredible foundation from which Buffalo Prep has been able to shift and mature, would not have been possible without the generosity and dedication of our donors. Thank you for being dedicated partners in Buffalo Prep’s imperative mission and dynamic advocates for these deserving scholars. Mary Ann Coulson Patti L. Oishei Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of FULL tuition scholarships for incoming high school freshmen at area independent secondary schools for the fall of 2018. Oishei High School Scholarships are awarded to talented, dedicated students of color in the Western New York area who want to attend one of 15 participating high schools that are members of the Education Collaborative of WNY (EdCo). The highly competitive, selective scholarship offers an educational opportunity to 15 local students of color each year and is intended to make a positive difference in the perception, attitudes and lives of the students, their families and the academic institutions themselves. Oishei’s high school tuition support has funded nearly 300 scholarships to date and now invests over $800,000 per year, totaling approximately $10,000,000 since 1998. Any student interested in being considered for an Oishei Scholarship must first complete the application process required by their first-choice EdCo-member school. Each school will forward its scholarship nominations to an independent scholarship selection committee which will announce its decisions in the spring of 2018. Placement exams for the various independent secondary schools are scheduled to take place this fall/winter. For application information, students should contact the director of admissions at his or her first-choice participating EdCo -member school. Many of the early Buffalo high schools also published student literary journals, and some include lists of students. These and other relevant publications, such as alumni directories, are listed in this guide by the school name under High Schools. Some of the college yearbooks and alumni directories are stored in our Closed Stacks. They can be retrieved in minutes and the staff is happy to do so. Elementary, grammar and middle schools? There are a few in our collection; see first section below. School #51 published a yearbook called the Broadcaster. Junior High Yearbooks are listed with the High School Yearbooks. Where ELSE can I find yearbooks? Try contacting the school, if it is still in existence. Many keep archival collections pertaining to their own history, often as part of the school’s library.

It was another year of progress and noteworthy achievement, and we are delighted to share some of the highlights with you. In April, we celebrated the accomplishments of our 35th graduating class of Jefferson Scholars. In the class were a Schwarzman Scholar, a Fulbright Scholar, the Edgar Shannon Outstanding Engineering Student, the Ernest H. Ern Outstanding TIMOTHY J. INGRASSIA Chairman Student, and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award winner. The class also included the managing editor of The Cavalier Daily, a Gray-Carrington Scholarship recipient, two vice-chairs of the Judiciary Committee, and the chair of the University Guide Service, along with the president of the Raven Society and a quadruple All-American national champion in Mock Trial. Eight members of the class lived on the Lawn, and the group graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.77. We also celebrated a very impressive accomplishment of a Scholar alumnus, who graduated in 2018 and became the eighth member of the Jefferson Scholars community to win a Marshall Scholarship. The Scholars returning to Grounds in the fall of 2019 are well positioned to continue the legacy of excellence established by the more than 900 alumni of the Foundation.
