It dates back as far as Ancient Greece as the spinning wheel of three goddesses known as Fates. There is a hint of "Sleeping Beauty" to the tale of the three fates - three fairies and a fateful curse they impose on an infant princess through a spinning wheel: the Wheel of Fortune. At the top of the Wheel of Fortune is the sphinx, saying "I rule". The Wheel is turning. Ahead of the sphinx is the serpent, saying "I have ruled". Behind the sphinx is the dog, waiting patiently as he rises up on the turn of the Wheel, saying "I will rule". The Wheel itself is without rule. The Emperor wears a crown and sits surveying a barren domain. At his feet is a shield. It is decorated with an eagle, a symbol of aspiration and worldly power. In most tarot card decks he has a beard and long, flowing hair. He is sometimes shown with an amulet hanging from a red ribbon around his neck. Only one side of the Emperor's face is visible in the card. This suggests that he is concerned with only one side of life. Where this card features in a woman's reading, it is usually associated with an important man and suggests paternal overtones.
