Aline: My name is Aline Brosh McKenna and I'm the co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rachel: My name is Rachel Bloom and I am the other co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Hrishikesh: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was a genre-bending TV show—part comedy, part drama, part musical, that aired for four seasons on the CW, from 2015 to 2019. It was a show that challenged and subverted the familiar tropes of romantic comedies. And along the way, it won a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award, and four Emmys, including some for the star of the show, Rachel Bloom, who co-created it with Aline Brosh McKenna. When it comes to romantic comedies, Aline Brosh McKenna is a master of the form, having written the screenplays for 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada, among others. But before Rachel and Aline got to deconstructing romantic comedies, they had a meet-cute of their own, thanks to the website Jezebel. Here’s Aline. A bstract Romantic comedy adaptations based on bestsellers aimed at predominantly female readers have become more frequent in the fifteen years since the publication of Bridget Jones’s Diary (1996) and the financial success of its adaptation (Sharon Maguire, 2001). Contemporary popular literature and films created specifically for women have emerged alongside the spread of neoliberalist and postfeminist discourses. This thesis offers a timely examination of bestselling adapted texts, including chick lit novels, a sel f - help book and a memoir, and their romantic comedy adaptations. While some of the books and films have received individual attention in academic writing, they have not been examined together as an interconnected group of texts. This thesis is the first work to cohesively analyse representations of gender in mainstream bestsellers predominantly aimed at female readers and their romantic comedy adaptations published and released between 1996 and 2011. Through a combination of textual analysis and broader d iscursive and contextual analysis, it examines how these popular culture texts adapt and extend themes, characters , narrative style and the plot structure from Bridget Jones’s Diary .

The film will release simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access for a one-time additional fee on Friday, May 28. Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (La La Land) stars in Disney’s Cruella, an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious—and notoriously fashionable—villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella. Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis.

  • The Devil Is in the Details: How the Devil Wears Prada Brands the Image of the Fashion Journalist
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS: HOW THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA BRANDS THE IMAGE OF THE FASHION JOURNALIST BY PRISCILLA HWANG Introduction It’s the job “a million girls would die for,”1 if you’re into fashion, that is. And you have to be willing to do anything to keep your job working for Miranda Priestly, the terrorizing editor-in-chief of the fictitious Runway magazine. Author Lauren Weisberger illustrates the cruel and superficial world of fashion journalism in her 2003 best-selling novel The Devil Wears Prada – the adapted screenplay of the book was a box-office hit in 2006. Weisberger proves that working as a fashion journalist is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. Andrea “Andy” Sachs figures it out the hard way when she unintentionally finds herself working for Miranda Priestly as her second assistant.2 Inadequate at first, Andrea’s lack of fashion sense and sophistication is ridiculed among the thin, gorgeous employees of Runway. After all, this is the glossy world of fashion magazines where even a bad hair day can get you fired.3 It’s an exclusive universe of socialites, celebrities, high-end designers, sought-after photographers, and front-row seats during Fashion Week in Paris, Milan and Italy.4 It’s a members-only club for those in-the-know, and as Andrea painfully learns within a year, all you have to do to get there is scrape every inch of skin off your back to please the Miranda Priestlys of the fashion world. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS: HOW THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA BRANDS THE IMAGE OF THE FASHION JOURNALIST BY PRISCILLA HWANG 2 Weisberger’s novel indirectly mirrors her own past experiences working as an assistant to an editor at Vogue, one of the world’s most prominent fashion magazines.5 Those in the fashion industry will confess – the merciless Miranda Priestly seems to be a carbon- copy of Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
