Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity By Melina Kristine Dabney A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Film Studies 2017 This thesis entitled: Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the new Femininity written by Melina Kristine Dabney has been approved for the Department of Film Studies ________________________________________________ (Melinda Barlow, Ph.D., Committee Chair) ________________________________________________ (Suranjan Ganguly, Ph.D., Committee Member) ________________________________________________ (Reiland Rabaka, Ph.D., Committee Member) Date: The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signatories, and we Find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards Of scholarly work in the above mentioned discipline. Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

• International Casting Directors Network Index
International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • Great Literature Collection
Great Literature Collection Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within CIA operative Aldrich Ames has, like his father, always been a company man. Although not always competent, he is chief of the Counter Intelligence Soviet Branch and has few friends within the Agency. On the verge of financial ruin due to, among other things, his wife Rosario's heavy spending, the hard-drinking and desperate Ames decides to sell secrets to the Russians. His first "job" has fatal consequences for ten Russians who worked for the CIA. Ames' boss, the Chief of Operations, who is friendly toward Ames, discovers that someone within the CIA is divulging high-level information. He appoints Jeanne Vertefeuille to head up the investigation. Jeanne recruits her own older staff, derisively dubbed the "over the hill gang". Poring through an abundance of records, case files and information proves to be an awesome task and their search goes on for eight years. After a year-long stint in Rome and now with Bush in the White House, Ames continues turning over information to the Russians for millions of dollars, re-routing deposits to Swiss banks and his wife's family in Colombia. Still an alcoholic, he buys a Jaguar and moves his family to an expensive home in a plush suburb. Ames soon realizes, however, that the investigation is closing in and gets very nervous when a Russian politico who could disclose Ames' duplicity defects to America. Ames gets lucky, his treason is not yet uncovered. Ames' own actions, however, begin to draw suspicion towards him, especially when he tries to conduct his own investigation to uncover the spy within the CIA.

  • Writing Dialogue & Advice from the Pros
Writing Dialogue & Advice from the Pros Writing great dialogue is considered an art form. Listening to real-life conversations, watching award- winning films, and learning from the masters will help you craft dialogue that shines on the page. The following writing thoughts and advice are excerpts from Karl Iglesias’ book, The 101 Habits of Highly Successful Screenwriters. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Writing Unrealistic and Boring Dialogue In real life, dialogue is mostly polite conversation. In film, polite conversation is considered bad dialogue, unless it’s witty, sarcastic, or has a unique voice. The reason is that polite chat lacks tension, and tension is the key to dramatic storytelling. As Alfred Hitchcock once said, “Drama is real life with all the boring parts cut out of it.” The key to good dialogue is to understand that it’s not conversation, it’s action. What characters say in a scene should be said to get what they want in the scene. And to determine whether or not your dialogue sounds realistic, read it out loud. Garrison Keillor once advised, “If you read your work out loud, it helps to know what’s bad.” Try it. It works. Dialogue always sounds better in your head. Better to be embarrassed in your room than on the set. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read Your Dialogue Out Loud Writing authentic, well-crafted dialogue that sparkles, individualizes characters, and entertains the reader is the ultimate challenge for screenwriters, who otherwise may have solid script elements. It’s crucial to attracting talent, which can green-light your script. Writing great dialogue can also sell the writer, for those who excel in this area are highly sought after to the tune of six figures per week for dialogue rewrites.

Partners Transcript: Aline & Rachel Aline: There was tons and tons of stuff coming out of the writers' room that Rachel could not process because she was shooting. I would try and grab her when she was changing, or when she was peeing, or— (OVERLAP) Rachel: She saw me naked and peeing a lot. Aline: Yeah. Aline: My name is Aline Brosh McKenna and I'm the co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rachel: My name is Rachel Bloom and I am the other co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Hrishikesh: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was a genre-bending TV show—part comedy, part drama, part musical, that aired for four seasons on the CW, from 2015 to 2019. It was a show that challenged and subverted the familiar tropes of romantic comedies. And along the way, it won a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award, and four Emmys, including some for the star of the show, Rachel Bloom, who co-created it with Aline Brosh McKenna. When it comes to romantic comedies, Aline Brosh McKenna is a master of the form, having written the screenplays for 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada, among others. But before Rachel and Aline got to deconstructing romantic comedies, they had a meet-cute of their own, thanks to the website Jezebel. Here’s Aline. Aline: I was in my old office, which is on the Hanson Lot and I was procrastinating. And at the time I used to read Jezebel pretty regularly, and I saw a little piece on - Rachel had a new video out.
