I Love Greenville Community Plan I Love Greenville Community Plan The I Love Greenville Community Plan (GCP) began as a tool to generate investment for projects identified by residents, but it became much more than that. Over a 10-month period more than 500 residents and stakeholders have actively participated in the making of this plan. It has become a vehicle for the community to collaborate and organize in order to respond to existing and potential community issues. Uniting Greenville is an effective way to direct city, county, state and even attract private sector resources to the community. So if you are reading this and it is the first time you have heard of the I Love Greenville Community Plan please become involved. A neighborhood plan, like this one, supplements and provides feedback on existing redevelopment plans, master plan elements, and other strategies. It also opens up doors to new funding opportunities. This particular plan was developed specifically for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (NJDCA) Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (NRTC) program. If approved by NJDCA this will be one of the last plans accepted into the program. This is a huge opportunity, especially in a time of decreased private capital and broad, government funding cuts due to a down economy. That being said, NRTC funding alone is not likely to fix all issues in Greenville but it is a resource, not currently available, that will certainly help the Community. Facilitated by Garden State Episcopal Community Development Corporation (GSECDC) in collaboration with several non-profit organizations, residents, churches, block associations, and others stakeholders - the Plan seeks to address and improve quality of life issues in Greenville. It also aims to solicit one million dollars of state tax credits to Greenville each year for life of the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit program. The intent is to create new programs or supplement effective programs that residents in the community have identified. The planning area encompasses a portion of Greenville centering on Martin Luther King Drive from Union Street to Woodlawn Avenue between Bergen Avenue to Ocean Avenue.     Remarks on the History of Hudson County in Relation to Old Bergen Church and its Community Presented by Bob Murgittroyd (historian) during the program “Slice of History”(part of Old Bergen Church’s 350 th Anniversary celebration) on May 14, 2010 at the Brennan Courthouse, Jersey City, NJ Settlement of Bergen Tonight’s alloted time does not permit a lengthy re-telling of the history of our area but I have been asked to offer glimpses of the history of Hudson County during the 350 years of its existence. Today it is hard to imagine Hudson County as the edge of the American frontier, but from the time Henry Hudson sailed into the New York Bay in 1609 until the founding of the Town of Bergen in 1660, that is exactly what is was. During those 51 years settlers to the area experienced both the rewards and perils of living in a wildness area filled with rich natural resources and a native people whose cultural would often clash with their own. Almost immediately upon Hudson’s return to the Netherlands the prosperous merchants who had financed his voyage of discovery sought to exploit their investment in the area then named New Amsterdam. One commodity found by Hudson’s travels seemed to offer the best chance for immediate financial reward, the pelts of American beaver which were then so highly prized in Europe. For the next twelve years parties of men were sent to the area to establish small trading posts to barter with the natives for the valuable beaver skins.

EXISTING CONDITIONS As part of the background work in developing this Circulation Element, a detailed assessment of the history of circulation in Jersey City and an inventory of the baseline conditions of the City’s transportation system were prepared. 2.1 History of Circulation in Jersey City Photo Source: Jersey City Division of City Planning Strategically located on the Hudson River and with easy access to Upper New York Bay, the City of Jersey City was an important center for shipping and maritime activity during the peak of the industrial revolution of the early nineteenth century. This status was reinforced when the Morris Canal was completed at Jersey City in 1836, giving the City shared direct linkage with the Delaware River at Phillipsburg and with important inland points, such as Newark and Paterson. Jersey City continued to serve as a transit point between Upper New York Bay and inland points to the west, but as the industrial revolution progressed, new technologies enabled the development of newer, more efficient forms of transport than canals. Consequently, railroads followed and terminals were constructed along the Hudson River waterfront and other points in the City. One example is the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, which originally opened in 1864 and is located in what is now Liberty State Park. With terminals located on the Hudson River, it was not long before ideas about a rail linkage to New York City began to evolve. This led to the construction of what is now known as the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train, which commenced operations in 1907 after many arduous years of tunneling under the Hudson River.

Butcher EOC Is Dedicated he Port Authority this week dedicated its Emergency Operations Center to its longtime Chief Operating Officer Tand 41-year career public servant, the late Ernesto L. Butcher. A plaque to honor his memory was placed at the EOC at the PA Technical Center and another in the Board Room at 4 World Trade Center. During the December 8 ceremony, Chairman John Degnan Mike Dombrowski lauded Mr. Butcher’s service to the agency, including his efforts to rally his colleagues and reopen key transportation facilities following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Mr. Butcher died in May, two years after retiring from the PA.
