Language list EnglishSpanish Language of Material Spanish, French, Catalan Context Biographical Note Born in Jumella, Múrcia, Spain 1901, died in Barcelona 1984; known as Juanel; leader of the anarcho-syndicalists in Murcia; member of the national committee of the CNT and secretary of its national commission on relations with anarchist groups 1922; met in the beginning of the 1920s his lifelong companion Lola Iturbe (1902-1990); fled to France after involvement in the clandestine production of grenades in Barcelona and Granollers 1926; expelled to Belgium where he became in contact with Buenaventura Durruti and Francisco Ascaso, became a member of the Comitè Internacional de Defensa Anarquista (CIDA) and wrote articles in La Voz Libertaria; returned after the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic from Brussels to Barcelona 1930; succeeding José Elizalde he became secretary-general of the Peninsular Committee of the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI), the Iberian Anarchist Federation 1930-1935; editor of the syndicalist newspaper Tierra y Libertad from 1935; arrested July 1936 but released after the revolutionary impetus following the failed military coup of July 1936 in Barcelona which marked the beginning of the Spanish Civil War; after the reorganization of the Catalan generality in December 1936, the CNT took over the councillorship of defense and Molina became after the events in May 1937 sub- secretary of defense of Catalonia; went after the end of the Spanish Civil War to France where he was one the leaders of the MLE, the Spanish Libertarian Movement, in the south of France; visited, after being elected at the Paris congress in May 1945, clandestinely Spain in February 1946; appointed secretary of defense of the National Committee of the CNT and of the national alliance of the democratic forces 1946; arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison; released and settled in Toulouse 1952, where h stayed active as a militant; returned to Spain to collaborate with his comrades to reconstruct the CNT 1976; published Noche sobre España. Siete años en las prisiones de Franco (1958), España libre (1966), El movimiento clandestino en España 1939-1949 (1976) and El communismo totalitario (1982). The papers of Juan Manuel Molina are also the papers of his wife Lola Iturbe (Barcelona, 1902 - 1990), also a CNT member; during the Spanish Civil War Iturbe was correspondent to the Aragon front for the syndicalist weekly newspaper Tierra y Libertad and guide to Emma Goldman during her visit to the cooperatives and the frontlines; she was an active supporter of the anarchist women’s organization Mujeres Libres, founded in 1936, and wrote articles in their magazine Mujeres Libres; during her exile in France she was active in the resistance and collaborator of España libre, the periodical of the CNT in exile and published in Toulouse; she published La Mujer en la Lucha social y la Guerra civil de España (Mexico, 1974).
