OHIO APR IL 2004 U.S. World Cup Team Selected Overland Park, Kansas. April 4--ln a full day of racing, the U.S. team for the World Cup competition in Naumburg , Gennany , May I and 2 emerged . The day's racing included men's and women's events at 20 Km and junior men 's and women 's events at IO Km. Joining the team will be the men selected at an earlier 50 Km trial. The team includes five men and women at 20. five men at 50. and three juniors at IO for both men and women .. Today . Tim Seaman and Joanne Dow were easy winners in the two 20 Km races held on a 2 Km lap course . The women's race was dominated by veteran walkers with vast international experience . Joanne Dow , a couple of weeks past her 40th birlhday and a member of three Woorld Cup and two World Championship teams in the past, took command early in the race, dropping Teresa Vaill by 5 km and holding a 42 second lead as she passed JO km in 46:21. Content with the win. she didn't push for time and finished in I :34:44 , more than two minutes ahead of Vaill. Vaill, 41 , has been on six World Cup teams, dating back to 1985. She struggled over the second halfofthe race, but was still well clear of Michelle Rohl.

Competing in Round 1 of the Athletics Victoria Shield competition in Melbourne last Saturday, he nailed the 2000m walk with a superb 7:39.1. That's not too far off his PB of 7:29 and confirms his early season form. With the 2016 Olympics beckoning, I am sure he will be pulling out all stops this summer so stay tuned! Rhydian in action during the winter season at Middle Park WHAT'S COMING UP Victorian walkers have a week off formal competition this coming weekend, with the Melbourne Marathon taking centre stage on Sunday morning.     128 TRES DÈCADES D’ÈXIT ESPORTIU Quan la marxa atlètica del Baix va enlluernar el món Una modalitat de l’atletisme, la marxa atlètica, va posar la comarca al món durant més de tres dècades (1970-2000) gràcies als èxits esportius d’un grup d’atletes del Prat, Viladecans, Cornellà i l’Hospitalet JOSEP MARGALEF l passat 11 de novembre ens deixava, als 68 anys, Jordi Llopart, la primera Emedalla olímpica de l’atletisme espanyol amb la plata als Jocs Olímpics de Moscou’80. Dos anys abans, el 1978, als Europeus de Praga va assolir la primera medalla d’or espanyola en aquest esport. Tot això em va fer recordar un moment històric per al Baix Llobregat: el d’una modalitat de l’atletisme, la marxa atlètica, que durant més de tres dècades (1970­2000) va posar la comarca al món amb els èxits esportius d’un grup d’atletes del Prat, Viladecans, Cornellà i l’Hospitalet. Una imatge històrica: el moment en què Jordi Llopart aconsegueix la plata als Jocs Olímpics de Moscou’80. TRES DÈCADES D’ÈXIT ESPORTIU 129 La marxa atlètica no era un esport desconegut a Catalunya, amb noms ca­ talans llegendaris com els de Guerau Garcia, Enric Vilaplana, Pasqual Aparici o Agustí Jorba, que van marcar el camí dels anys 30 als 70, però amb èxits molt locals. L’embrió que convertiria la marxa atlètica en el gran esport del Baix Llo­ bregat i, fins i tot, d’Espanya té un nom propi: Moisès Llopart (1919­2002), fundador del Grup Cultural Recreatiu de la Seda (1948) al Prat de Llobregat, un atleta que va competir amb el club Laietània de Mataró en les especialitats de mig fons, fons i cros Enamorat de l’atletisme, fins i tot va construir al pati de casa seva el pri­ mer gimnàs del Prat.
