St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of Irish culture on or around March 17. It particularly remembers St. Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints, who ministered Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. He is said to have died on March 17 in or around the year 493. The most common St Patrick's Day symbol is the shamrock. Other Irish-related symbols seen on St Patrick’s Day include the harp, which was used in Ireland for centuries, as well as a mythological creature known as the leprechaun and a pot of gold that the leprechaun keeps hidden.

IRISH BLESSINGS:

May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may trouble avoid you wherever you go. INSTRUCTIONS – on how to get onto the United Church’s Online Auction Bidding Site is May the road rise up to meet you; outlined in this issue of News-in-Five. may the wind always be at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face, HAPPY BIDDING!! and rains fall soft upon your fields, And Thank You for Your Support. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

If you were travelling across the border (to the East) after the weekend – and asked a local what time it was – chances are you’d be late getting home for supper – unless you did the adjustments! Yes, our friends in Manitoba – and other areas – “took time-out” to change their clocks by an hour – good ol’ just stays the same – no problem! Can we expect to see a change??

“Twas another sports weekend – the Brier finals in curling, the girls’ Provincial playoffs in Allan, SK, and the PeeWee “C” provincial south finals – first game on Sunday at the Forum against the Jets. To take a break, one had the option of watching Telemiracle 44.

More signs of spring (officially a week from Friday). We’re seeing posters advertising bull sales; potholes on roadways are appearing more frequently (and overnight) – and sightings of geese, crows, robins and gophers! And a “really sure sign” – the Carpenter-igloo-on-Main has melted down to the frame!

Are you superstitious – well beware – it’s Friday the 13th! If you don’t fare well with this one, you’ll have a second chance in November! A few years ago, a black cat crossed our path – not once but twice – a couple of hours apart – on Friday the 13th – we’re still here – believe what you will. But one ‘news-typist’ believes it can be a bad day “computer-wise” when her program crashed as soon as the date was entered on page 1!

The 91st Brier is history with Nfld/Lab coming out as champions. Our Saskatchewan entry made a dedicated run for the title but Newfoundland/Labrador had a different plan. Kingston were awesome hosts – this was only the 2nd time they had hosted – way back in 1957 – and while on stats, Sask last won the Brier in 1980 – we were due – but not this year. Men’s World 2020 is set to begin March 28th in Glasgow, Scotland. Go Canada! Next year’s Brier will be in Kelowna, BC.

Let’s not forget the weather – still unusual – variation of temps and mostly above normal, next-to-none snow – what more can we ask? Did you see picture of residences along the shores of Lake Erie – ice shrouded after high winds drove waves beyond the shoreline.

Action at the Forum on Friday evening saw week #4 of Chase the Ace – Jake Porter won $80 but couldn’t connect with the Ace of Spades.

Had the privilege of attending the Moosomin Arts Council presentation of the Johnny McCuaig Band, aka the Arcana Kings, on the 5th – a new/exciting experience – a rock band including bagpipes (you read right)! Before the show, we kept wondering – “How will this sound” – it was awesome.

And Telemiracle 44 – what can we say – not a record breaker like last year, but $5,523,472 in 20 hours is not bad! Also great to see some students from Parkland School helping out! The good thing is that all this money will remain in Saskatchewan.

‘Til next week … …

NEWS FLASH … the tulips are peeking out of the ground on the south and east sides of the house! Should I cover them so they stay safe from the snow predicted this weekend?

An Air Force cargo plane was preparing for departure from Thule Air Base in Greenland. They were waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft's sewage holding tank. The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving, and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out. When the commander berated the Airman for his slowness and promised punishment, the Airman responded, 'Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I have a bang on my head, I'm stationed in Greenland, a dog ran off with my coat, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you going to do to punish me?'
