INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY #Balance for Better th Today (March 8 ) is International Women’s Day – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom’s Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups, campaigned for women’s equality. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. International Women's Day is a public holiday in some countries and largely ignored elsewhere.[4] In some places, it is a day of protest; in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood. A balanced world is a better world. How can we help forge a more gender-balanced world? Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality. Make IWD your day – every day. WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them) Well, did March come in like a lion or a lamb in “your books”? The on and off sunshine was lamb-like while the wind, squalls and temps were more lion-like – guess it could have been worse – you decide! One could say that our weather could be with a capital W the past few weeks! We had the privilege of attending the Red Moon Road concert at the Moosomin & District Arts Council on February 26th – a very talented trio from Winnipeg. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, percussion, vocals/awesome harmony together made this a unique show of song writing, musicianship, storytelling and showmanship. What are we hearing about separation – Montana leaving US to join Canada; Saskatchewan leaving Canada?? Maybe we could come up with a glorified version of “SWAP SHOP”. We’ve heard that the mind can be affected by too much cold weather, also! Potato lovers – expect to pay more! We’re hearing that because of adverse weather during harvest season, many acres of potatoes were unable to be harvested – 1,000 acres in Alberta, 5,200 acres in Manitoba and 6,800 acres in PEI. As in every shortage of a product, the price goes up for what’s left. And Telemiracle 43 – again a great success. From the small donation to the largest bequest – it “warms the heart” to hear of all the “caring and sharing”. Yes, Saskatchewan is a place where people give back by sharing support to those less fortunate - $5,619,214 was raised in the 20-hour telethon with the theme “coming together in community”. Yipes! – hear that the Red Deer AB area received a 4.6 earthquake at 6 a.m. on the 4th. Could this be some “inner voices” stating their opinion of the pipeline issue in our country? As of April 1st, we can expect to see an increase in our power and energy bills (and this WON’T be an April Fool’s joke!) Maybe the weather will have warmed up by then, as one will affect the other. St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of Irish culture on or around March 17. It particularly remembers St. Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints, who ministered Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. He is said to have died on March 17 in or around the year 493. The most common St Patrick's Day symbol is the shamrock. Other Irish-related symbols seen on St Patrick’s Day include the harp, which was used in Ireland for centuries, as well as a mythological creature known as the leprechaun and a pot of gold that the leprechaun keeps hidden.
