Many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses. There are several safer, alternative ways to participate in Halloween. If you may have COVID-19 or you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should not participate in in-person Halloween festivities and should not give out candy to trick-or-treaters. Some ideas for a safe Halloween: - Social distance between those handing out treats and the children collecting treats. - Participating in one-way trick-or-treating where individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for families to grab and go while continuing to social distance (such as at the end of a driveway or at the edge of a yard) - If you are preparing goodie bags, wash your hands with soap and water before and after preparing bags. - Attend a costume party held outdoors where protective masks are used and people can remain more than 6 feet apart. - Note: A costume Halloween mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask (unless it’s made of two or more layers of breathable fabric and covers mouth and nose). Consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask. A costume mask over a protective cloth mask can be dangerous and make it hard to breathe. - Have a Halloween themed movie night with family. Serve Halloween treats with the popcorn. - Wash wrappings of your treats before you open them. Wash your hands often after handling treats. High Risk Activities: - Attending crowded costume parties held indoors. - Going to an indoors haunted house, where it is crowded and people are screaming. - Using alcohol or drugs which can impair judgement. - Spending time with people who are not in your household or “in your bubble” – or going to communities where Covid-19 has been reported. - Not wearing a mask – not social distancing – not washing hands with soap and water before and after “Halloweening”. A “Spook-tacular” Halloween to all … new normal style! WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them) Two down (if we count B.C.) and two to go – elections we are talking about – municipal on November 9th. And where is the other one? Oh, yeah, now we remember – “south of the border – down Mexico way” – on the 3rd! Thank goodness we were spared a Federal non-confidence vote – with all that’s happening in our lives these days, could we have survived another X? Perhaps once we get all this “decision-making turbulence” out of the air, things will tend to start to take on a more positive direction – we can always hope – and dream! Have you noticed the similarities of Halloween and the recent political debates – trick or treat; scary actions and uncertainty of those who come to your door? The weatherman/person has taken on the “doom ‘n gloom” of everything else in the last few days – we weren’t planning to have to sweep snow off the lawn mower before putting it away for the winter – oh, well. One “old-timer” at coffee row made the comment that if this now stays, that there would be pretty good sleddin’ by Christmas – and into March (he was invited to move to another table). The forecast for this week is for more normal temps, but also snow some days – and maybe freezing rain! Robins are still being seen – maybe they just haven’t gotten their GPS calibrated to the proper season yet! (Winter doesn’t officially arrive until December 21st) and maybe they don’t want to cross the border until after the 3rd! Just heard of a town in the area who were having “curbside polls” in the advance voting as a means of reducing the number of voters that might show up on election day – would this be a first? On closing – everyone is being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic – each one dealing with it in their own special way … be respectful of their decision … we are all in this together! TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF OUR VETERANS As November 11, 2020 approaches, our thoughts go out to the men and women who have served our country. We remember the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and those that are with us and help us to Remember through the work of the Royal Canadian Legion and other programs. The year 2020 has given us many challenges and we have to face one more. Covid-19 has given us some things to review on how we will proceed with our November 11th ceremonies. Our decision is to have a small ceremony at the Legion cenotaph at 11:00 a.m. November 11, 2020. We will lay six wreaths dedicated to the Government of Saskatchewan, Wawota Legion, Veterans of World War I, Veterans of World War II, Veterans of the Korean War and the Peace Keepers and to those who have served and those that are still serving our country. As we come together on the 11th of November we are required to follow the guidelines of our province and community with regards at the Covid-19. The Local, Provincial and National levels of the Royal Canadian Legion depend on our Poppy campaign to provide the services to look after our Veterans throughout the year.
