  • Near Vermilion Sands: the Context and Date of Composition of an Abandoned Literary Draft by J. G. Ballard
Near Vermilion Sands: The Context and Date of Composition of an Abandoned Literary Draft by J. G. Ballard Chris Beckett ‘We had entered an inflamed landscape’1 When Raine Channing – ‘sometime international model and epitome of eternal youthfulness’2 – wanders into ‘Topless in Gaza’, a bio-fabric boutique in Vermilion Sands, and remarks that ‘Nothing in Vermilion Sands ever changes’, she is uttering a general truth about the fantastic dystopian world that J. G. Ballard draws and re-draws in his collection of stories set in and around the tired, flamboyant desert resort, a resort where traumas flower and sonic sculptures run to seed.3 ‘It’s a good place to come back to,’4 she casually continues. But, like many of the female protagonists in these stories – each a femme fatale – she is a captive of her past: ‘She had come back to Lagoon West to make a beginning, and instead found that events repeated themselves.’5 Raine has murdered her ‘confidant and impresario, the brilliant couturier and designer of the first bio-fabric fashions, Gavin Kaiser’.6 Kaiser has been killed – with grim, pantomime karma – by a constricting gold lamé shirt of his own design: ‘Justice in a way, the tailor killed by his own cloth.’7 But Kaiser’s death has not resolved her trauma. Raine is a victim herself, a victim of serial plastic surgery, caught as a teenager in Kaiser’s doomed search for perpetual gamin youth: ‘he kept me at fifteen,’ she says, ‘but not because of the fashion-modelling. He wanted me for ever when I first loved him.’8 She hopes to find in Vermilion Sands, in its localized curvature of time and space, the parts of herself she has lost on a succession of operating tables.

  • Color Specification Rules
FDM COLOR SPECIFICATION RULES COLOR STANDARDS The FDM has established a set of 24 standard colors to use in titles and descriptors. By using standard titles, it helps the entries in the galleries sort so that similar discs appear together. It also assists users when trying to search. Instead of having to guess if the disc is described as blue, teal, turquoise, aquamarine, cyan or blue-green, using the FDM standard color name (turquoise in this example) makes it easier to search by color for a disc or other museum item. The FDM Color Standards guide can be found at www.flyingdiscmuseum.com/colorstandards. The following is a set of rules for how to apply the color standards to titles and descriptors. 1. If a manufacturer or vendor has defined explicit color names for its discs or other items, those names should be used. Examples: Ancient Alien Green, Peach, Aqua Blue Glow 2. For color hues that are not represented by the color wheel: a. If the color is a synonym for a color on the wheel, use the color from the wheel in the title and descriptor. Example: Violet disc—Purple in the title and descriptor. b. If the color is a different hue than the color wheel name, use the closest color wheel name in the title. In the descriptor, follow the standard color with the alternate color name in parentheses. Example: Peach disc—Orange in title, Orange (Peach) in descriptor. Page 1 of 4 3. For discs that need an adjective to properly describe the color (e.g.

  • Use of Natural Colours in the Ice Cream Industry
USE OF NATURAL COLOURS IN THE ICE CREAM INDUSTRY Dr. Juan Mario Sanz Penella Dr. Emanuele Pedrazzini Dr. José García Reverter SECNA NATURAL INGREDIENTS GROUP Definition of ice cream Ice cream is a frozen dessert, a term that includes different types of product that are consumed frozen and that includes sorbets, frozen yogurts, non-dairy frozen desserts and, of course, ice cream. In order to simplify its classification, we can consider for practical purposes two different types of frozen desserts: ice cream and sorbets. Ice cream includes all products that have a neutral pH and contain dairy ingredients. While sorbet refers to products with an acidic pH, made with water and other ingredients such as fruit, but without the use of dairy. Additionally, when referring to ice cream, we are not referring to a single type of product, we are actually referring to a wide range of these. Ice cream is a food in which the three states of matter coexist, namely: water in liquid form and as ice crystals, sugars, fats and proteins in solid form and occluded air bubbles in gaseous form, Figure 1. Artisanal ice creams based on natural ingredients which give it its special texture. It should be noted that ice cream is a very complete food from a nutritional point of view since it incorporates in its formulation a wide range of ingredients (sugars, milk, fruits, egg products ...) essential for a balanced diet. Another aspect of great relevance in the manufacture of ice cream is the hedonic factor. Ice cream is consumed mainly for the pure pleasure of tasting it, the hedonic component being the main factor that triggers its consumption, considering its formulation and design a series of strategies to evoke a full range of sensations: gustatory, olfactory, visual and even, of the touch and the ear.

  • Beige Adipose Tissue Activities in Human Obesity
International Journal of Obesity (2015) 39, 1515–1522 © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0307-0565/15 www.nature.com/ijo ORIGINAL ARTICLE Distinct regulation of hypothalamic and brown/beige adipose tissue activities in human obesity B Rachid1, S van de Sande-Lee1, S Rodovalho1, F Folli2, GC Beltramini3, J Morari1, BJ Amorim4, T Pedro5, AF Ramalho1, B Bombassaro1, AJ Tincani6, E Chaim6, JC Pareja6,7, B Geloneze7, CD Ramos4, F Cendes5, MJA Saad8 and LA Velloso1 BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The identification of brown/beige adipose tissue in adult humans has motivated the search for methods aimed at increasing its thermogenic activity as an approach to treat obesity. In rodents, the brown adipose tissue is under the control of sympathetic signals originating in the hypothalamus. However, the putative connection between the depots of brown/beige adipocytes and the hypothalamus in humans has never been explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of the hypothalamus and brown/beige adipose tissue to cold stimulus in obese subjects undergoing body mass reduction following gastric bypass. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We evaluated twelve obese, non-diabetic subjects undergoing Roux-in-Y gastric bypass and 12 lean controls. Obese subjects were evaluated before and approximately 8 months after gastric bypass. Lean subjects were evaluated only at admission. Subjects were evaluated for hypothalamic activity in response to cold by functional magnetic resonance, whereas brown/beige adipose tissue activity was evaluated using a (F 18) fluorodeoxyglucose positron emisson tomography/ computed tomography scan and real-time PCR measurement of signature genes. RESULTS: Body mass reduction resulted in a significant increase in brown/beige adipose tissue activity in response to cold; however, no change in cold-induced hypothalamic activity was observed after body mass reduction.
