  • Color Specification Rules
FDM COLOR SPECIFICATION RULES COLOR STANDARDS The FDM has established a set of 24 standard colors to use in titles and descriptors. By using standard titles, it helps the entries in the galleries sort so that similar discs appear together. It also assists users when trying to search. Instead of having to guess if the disc is described as blue, teal, turquoise, aquamarine, cyan or blue-green, using the FDM standard color name (turquoise in this example) makes it easier to search by color for a disc or other museum item. The FDM Color Standards guide can be found at www.flyingdiscmuseum.com/colorstandards. The following is a set of rules for how to apply the color standards to titles and descriptors. 1. If a manufacturer or vendor has defined explicit color names for its discs or other items, those names should be used. Examples: Ancient Alien Green, Peach, Aqua Blue Glow 2. For color hues that are not represented by the color wheel: a. If the color is a synonym for a color on the wheel, use the color from the wheel in the title and descriptor. Example: Violet disc—Purple in the title and descriptor. b. If the color is a different hue than the color wheel name, use the closest color wheel name in the title. In the descriptor, follow the standard color with the alternate color name in parentheses. Example: Peach disc—Orange in title, Orange (Peach) in descriptor. Page 1 of 4 3. For discs that need an adjective to properly describe the color (e.g.

Indigo: Sources, processes and possibilities for bioregional blue Nicholas Wenner and Matthew Forkin November 2017 Photo by Kalie Cassel-Feiss by Kalie Photo Table of Contents Introduction . .3 Indigo . .4 The Indigo Process . 11 Conclusions . 15 Photo by Paige Green Green by Paige Photo Indigo Overview 2 Introduction his report was completed with funding generously provided by the Jena and Michael King TFoundation as part of Fibershed’s True Blue project . It is one project of many that support Fibershed’s larger mission: “Fibershed develops regional and regenerative fiber systems on behalf of independent working producers, by expanding opportunities to implement carbon farming, forming catalytic foundations to rebuild regional manufacturing, and through connecting end-users to farms and ranches through public education.” In this report we present the various sources of blue dye and of indigo, and motivate the use of plant-based indigo in particular . We also identify the limitations of natural dyes like indigo and the need for larger cultural and systemic shifts . The ideal indigo dye production system would be a closed-loop system that moves from soil to dye to textiles and back to soil . The indigo process has three basic steps: planting, harvesting, and dye extraction . In this document, we provide an overview of each, and detailed explorations are given in two separate documents that will be available through Fibershed by the end of 2017 . This report is based on a literature review of academic research, natural dye books, online content, and personal interviews . It benefited greatly from conversations with (and the generosity of) many skilled artisans and natural dyers, including Rowland Ricketts, Jane Palmer, and Kori Hargreaves .

  • The Truth About “The Truth About True Blue”
The Truth about “The Truth about True Blue” Jonathan Cohen, C. L. Hardin, and Brian P. McLaughlin∗ 1 Color, Variation, and Tye’s “Solutions” It can happen that a single surface S, viewed in normal conditions, looks pure blue (“true blue”) to observer John but looks blue tinged with green to a second observer, Jane, even though both are normal in the sense that they pass the standard psychophysical tests for color vision. Tye (2006a) finds this situation prima facie puzzling, and then offers two different “solutions” to the puzzle.1 The first is that at least one observer misrepresents S’s color because, though normal in the sense explained, she is not a Normal color observer: her color de- tection system is not operating in the current condition in the way that Mother Nature intended it to operate. His second solution involves the idea that Mother Nature designed our color detection systems to be reliable with respect to the detection of coarse-grained colors (e.g., blue, green, yellow, orange), but our capacity to represent the fine-grained colors (e.g., true blue, blue tinged with green) is an undesigned spandrel. On this second solution, it is consistent with the variation between John and Jane that both represent the color of S in a way that complies with Mother Nature’s intentions: both represent S as exemplify- ing the coarse-grained color blue, and since (we may assume) S is in fact blue, both represent it veridically. Of course, they also represent fine-grained colors of S, and, according to Tye, at most one of these representations is veridical (Tye says that only God knows which).

  • Oldest Indigodyed Fabric Found
12/25/2016 Oldest indigodyed fabric found | Science News News: Archaeology,Chemistry Oldest indigodyed fabric found Long before Egyptians, Peruvians made bluehued cotton 6,000 years ago ByBruce Bower 2:00pm, September 14, 2016Citations TRUE BLUE A strand of blue yarn from a 6,200 to 6,000yearold patch of woven cotton (right) excavated in Peru contains the oldest evidence in the world of the colorfast dye known as indigo blue, researchers say. Diagram at left denotes parts of the recovered material containing blue dye. Lauren A. Badams, J. Splitstoser Further Reading Magazine issue: Vol. 190, No. 8, October 15, 2016, p. 8 Ancient South Americans made blue fabrics to dye for. A piece of approximately 6,000yearold woven cotton material from Peru gets its blue hue from indigo dye, making it the oldest known example of the colorfast dye’s use anywhere, researchers find. Until now, the earliest indigodyed fabrics dated to around 4,400 years ago in Egypt and about 3,000 years ago in what’s now western China, say archaeologist Jeffrey Splitstoser of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and his colleagues. Chemical analyses of fabric unearthed at Huaca Prieta, an ancient site on Peru’s northern coast, unveiled the presence of indigo dye roughly 1,600 years before this fabric coloring showed up in Egypt, Splitstoser’s team reports online September 14 in Science Advances. Huaca Prieta was first excavated in the 1940s. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from hearths and other material indicates that people occupied Huaca Prieta from around 14,500 to 4,000 years ago.
