Newsletter-March-2021 Supporting Our Military Family of the Royal Navy, Army and RAF I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am WO Chris Sweeney March 2021 and wef 4 Jan 21, I was assigned into Brunssum as the Head of Location within the NSE, replacing WO Andy Rodulson – after a short gap . I have served in a multitude of different roles at home and overseas, including HR, European Emergency Number: 112 career management and Attaché support, in an RAF career spanning over 34 years. Operation CLIPPER: Part 1 Having been “gripped” by Gp Capt Whitty for my lack of knowledge on Op CLIPPER I will attempt to rectify the error this month. Op CLIPPER was an Allied offensive by the British XXX Corps, Lieutenant General Brian Horrocks, to reduce the Geilenkirchen salient in mid-November 1944. This salient was a German position on the Siegfried Line (Westwall) at the boundary between the British Second Army and the American 9th Army. It restricted the movement of Allied forces and was a potential threat. Op CLIPPER was a preliminary to those wider Allied operations aimed at gaining control of the Roer valley and the Hürtgen Forest. Anglo-American cooperation was supported by the availability of British artillery and the specialised armour support of "Hobart's Funnies" (such as flail and Crocodile flamethrower tanks). A two-pronged attack was planned on the salient and the US 84th Infantry Division was temporarily attached to XXX Corps. The British part of the operation was coordinated from 13th – 24th November in a house at Laurastraat 67 in Eygelshoven (now Kerkrade) and units of the British 43rd (Wessex) Division actually used the JFCBS site prior to the attack. The plan had four phases. First, on 18 November 84th Division, commanded by Major General Alexander R. Bolling, would take Prummern and the surrounding high ground, east of Geilenkirchen.

    Joseph Roger Knack 2 August 1925 – 1 December 1944 Birth: 2 Aug 1925 Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA Death: 1 Dec 1944 (aged 19) Nieuwenhagen, Landgraaf Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands Burial: Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands Section G ~ Row 16 ~ Grave 23 He was in Company L of Third Battalion, in the 334th Infantry Regiment, which was within the 84th Infantry Division. As such, he had the honor of participating in the very first day of combat operations ever for the 84th ID, as his regiment was the first to assault the German town of Prummern, on Nov 18, 1944. Note that the initial assembly of the 84th Division contained a lot of volunteers that were considered “4F”. As such, they were originally designated to be an occupying army in Germany after the war was over, allowing combat armies to come home. Joseph Roger Knack had tried to volunteer twice but was rejected, do to poor eyesight. But as the U.S. ran out of young men, he tried a third time and got in. As time went on and casualties took a toll on US armies, the 84th Division was moved into combat. The 334th Infantry Regiment was the first in the field.Joseph served as a Private in the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted in the Army on December 10, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He was noted as being Single, without dependents. He was "Killed In Action" in Germany during the war and awarded a Purple Heart.

Under the name “Operation Clipper” the British 43rd Wessex Division and the American 84th Infantry Division supported by the 8th Armoured Brigade and elements of the 79th Armoured Division (The Funnies) were ordered to take out the salient. The Americans attacked through the Siegfreid line to take Geilenkirchen while the British attacked along the front of the Siegfreid line taking out advanced German position held by the German 183rd Volks Grenadier Division.

    Military History Anniversaries 16 thru 30 November Events in History over the next 15 day period that had U.S. military involvement or impacted in some way on U.S military operations or American interests Nov 16 1776 – U.S. Revolutionary War: Hessians Capture Fort Washington » During the Revolutionary War, Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen and a force of 3,000 Hessian mercenaries lay siege to Fort Washington on Long Island. Throughout the morning, Knyphausen met stiff resistance from the Patriot riflemen inside, but by the afternoon the Americans were overwhelmed, and the garrison commander, Colonel Robert Magaw, surrendered. Valuable ammunition and supplies were lost to the Hessians and 2,818 Americans were taken prisoner. The prisoners faced a particularly grim fate. Many later died from deprivation and disease aboard British prison ships anchored in New York Harbor. Among the 53 dead and 96 wounded Patriots were John and Margaret Corbin of Virginia. When John died in action, his wife Margaret took over his cannon, cleaning, loading and firing the gun until she too was severely wounded. The first woman known to have fought for the Continental Army, Margaret survived, but lost the use of her left arm. Two weeks earlier, William Demont had deserted from the Fifth Pennsylvania Battalion and given British intelligence agents information about the Patriot defense of New York, including information about the location and defense of Fort Washington. Demont was the first traitor to the Patriot cause, and his treason contributed significantly to Knyphausen’s victory.     Black Bread and Barbed Wire: A World War II POW’s Story Paul Porter and Eric L. Gruver eorge Bernard, although born August 16, 1911, in Newark, New Jersey, spent much of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when his family moved there in G 1918. Without a high school diploma, Bernard worked for a printing company until he was drafted at the age of 29. The peacetime draft of 1940 began before the United States was a combatant during World War II; the fall of France in Summer 1940 caused the U.S. government to prepare for the possibility of war, and they authorized the conscription of 900,000 men. One of the early draftees, the U.S. Army sent George to Camp Lee, Virginia, in March 1941 and ultimately assigned him to the 29th Division Field Artillery.1 The truth was that supplies were short. “Fort Meade had not been prepared to receive a large influx of Selective Service men. Not enough uniforms were available to clothe everyone, so some of the new troops were issued old World War I woolen uniforms or Civilian Conservation Corps outfits. He knew survival tricks that he taught his platoon, such as how to create a foxhole in frozen ground: he shot eight rounds into the same spot, dug out the loose dirt with his trench knife, placed a half stick of TNT in the hole, lit the fuse, ran, hit the dirt, got up, ran back, and dug with his trench shovel.
