The Geilenkirchen salient was part of the Siegfreid line and in November 1944 the Allies decided to attack this point of the line.
Under the name “Operation Clipper” the British 43rd Wessex Division and the American 84th Infantry Division supported by the 8th Armoured Brigade and elements of the 79th Armoured Division (The Funnies) were ordered to take out the salient.
The Americans attacked through the Siegfreid line to take Geilenkirchen while the British attacked along the front of the Siegfreid line taking out advanced German position held by the German 183rd Volks Grenadier Division.
The Game This display game shows the attack to take the advanced German positions in the towns and villages in the British sector of operations and finally holding them against counter attacks by the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division.
The positions attacked and the units involved are as follows:
Niederheide; 7th Somerset Light Infantry.
Hocheld; 5th Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry.
Bauchem; 5th Dorsets.
Tripsrath; 1st Worcestershire Sherwood Wargames Group We are a small group of friends who play wargames when we have the time. Our main interests are Napoleonics, ACW, and WW2.
When not playing (which is most of the time) we are planning, painting and building terrain for our projects.
